Here are a pair of picks from a show together in the late 90's. My opening pick is a band I'd never heard of before this show, and have since become one of my favorites. A Boston band, who at the time were only a trio (since added a fourth) and I loved the way the drummer played mostly bongos and cymbals and other percussion instruments. They can't be that bad, they have made it onto two Keerock Christmas albums!

1999 - Guster - Barrel of a Gun

They opened for The Barenaked Ladies. One of my favorite shows I'd ever gone to. Unlike a lot of bands, they just seem to be having fun on the stage, interacting with the crowd, and not taking things too seriously. Unfortunately, they took a turn down in 2009, when Steven Page left the band. He has such an incredible voice, and lots of their songs are duets, so if you lose one of the voices...

Great band name

Kravitz' drummer is named Cindy Blackman. Her background is in jazz. She released a few albums as a leader and appeared as a sidewoman on lots more. The gig with Lenny paid some bills.

16 Next Time - Curtis Harding (2014)

I've listened to a few neo soul playlists trying to fill something to fill 2009 & 2011. The name of the genre is stupid IMO because it's more retro than neo. Many tracks are derivative enough to drive me nuts playing spot the influence. Harding has some of that as well but this track is a more original concoction combining rhythm, blues, rock and classic soul.

The recording linked above is the album version sweetened by some horn overdubs. The version on this NSFW video was recorded earlier sans horns and makes effective use of a pair of very small breasts.

This is the final survivor of my original concept with songs by groups of sisters. There are a lot more bands with brothers but a bar for gay black men might send the wrong impression. NTTAWWT. There's probably zero chance I'd get sniped on this one but I want to put one sisters song on the board before I find a better song from 1975.

The Pointers' reputation hasn't held up well but this track is a sizzling piece of New Orleans inspired funk. Not sure who's in the band now but they're playing tonight at the Bayou Cypress Casino in Charenton, Louisiana
