DMB .. yes, this is the Dave Matthews Band thread (1 Viewer)

Just finished up back to back weekends. Alpine Valley and then Deer Creek. N2 at Alpine was cancelled so they rescheduled to the Sunday after Deer Creek...so of course we drive from Deer Creek to Alpine. What a crazy two weekends and the sets were 🔥

Next up for us is the Gorge for LaborDave Weekend...can't freaking wait!

Always wanted to do something like that here but figured it wouldn't get much love. They're the one band that I have a deep appreciation and opinion of their work but solely prior to Stand Up. My music listening went in another direction at that point. I'll be curious to see your final list. I already have a problem with Grey Street being that low. I would think that's a top 20 song for me. Sounds great live. There used to be another verse in the leaked Lillywhite Sessions but it got axed with the official release on Busted Stuff.

I didn't post in the other thread but actually ranked my top 41, the required 31 + 10. Here is 37-41:

37. Digging a Ditch (Busted Stuff)
38. Bartender (Busted Stuff)
39. The Stone (Before These Crowded Streets)
40. Mercy (Away from the World)
41. Tripping Billies (Crash)

If I was tiering these songs, there would be a tier drop somewhere after 38 and before 41, but any of 32-38 could definitely have made my top 31 if I finished my ranking on a different day. I love Grey Street and had a hard time leaving it out.

It's been a while, but I'd be mildly surprised if I enjoy anything from Busted Stuff more than Lillywhite.

I love most DMB but mainly the early stuff up through Before These Crowded Streets. BTCS is a top 10 album for me all time. Start to finish, I just love it. I'll be giving love in the countdown thread for sure and appreciate you choosing them.

41 seems like an appropriate number. Not liking seeing Bartender that low. Not the same without Boyd (which can be said for a lot of their stuff), but another great live song with that long drawn out violin intro. Dave really gives it his all on the vocals for it. How long are you gonna make me wait for the full list so I can find out if I'm overreacting?

Actually my 3rd favorite album but obviously still awesome. Coin flip between crash and under the table. 41, two step and lie in our graves (almost entirely bc of boyds solo) are a hard to beat top 3 live for me but under the table I think has more depth.

And it's pretty standard live now. You should give the last few albums a listen, the current make up of the band is, IMHO, the best since the 90s. So much more energy since Boyd got bounced, and adding in Buddy and Jeff makes a world of difference, you can see how much fun they are having out there now.

Also, if anyone wants to PM me, I have a lot of the Friday live shows from SiriusXM in MP3. Perfect soundboard rips like back in the day. There is an early show on Sirius right now, and I really do prefer older Dave and DMB to the earlier days.

All three are top notch, but I have to also give the nod to Before These Crowded Streets. I love its dark vibes and how angry it is at times.

That may be true, but I just feel like their songwriting isn't what it used to be. Come Tomorrow had a few songs I like that stuck with me, but I can't even remember much about Walk Around the Moon. Their songs were a lot better when they stretched them out a bit in the studio. I get that they still jam the short songs out live sometimes, but even with DMB, I still almost always go for the studio albums, and an album by them of 3-4 minute songs just seems a bit lazy. They are a lot better than that.

Love Jeff. RIP Leroi, but I prefer his style over leroi's and I think Rashawn is a nice secondary horn. Buddy doesn't do much for me sound wise. They already went through a piano phase and I don't think it does much aside from when Butch and Carter used to have some nice jams together. I really don't like Tim in the band. He's probably one of my favorite acoustic guitarists from his earlier shows with just him and Dave but never dug his electric sound. Really didn't like that period when it was both Tim and Boyd in the band b/c Tim's solo's just cut into Boyd's. Nothing for me will beat having Boyd in the band. That violin was such a distinct sound and really was a key element in so much of their early stuff. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a violin. I just knocked out Warehouse, Seek Up and LIOG from 2002 and brought back some memories. Gonna be seeing them next week in NJ and then the following in NH. They're still killing it but just not the same. Enjoy the Gorge. 2nd favorite outdoor venue after red rocks.

I picked 6 songs from Under the Table for my top 31, and all of them are in my top 12. It's just an incredible album. Definitely a top 10 all timer for me.

Some of you here have seen Dave live a lot more than me. I think I have seen him live 5 times, but the last time was probably at least 12 years ago. Always enjoyed the shows.

I think its just a little lacking on the top end for me. Not sure any of those cracks my top 10. Maybe crush.

The 3-song run of The Stone, Crush and The Dreaming Tree was what made me a fan thanks to my brother playing them for me after I had all but dismissed them, so those three will always stand the tallest for me. It's hard to go wrong with the good ones from the other 90s albums, for sure though. Two Step, Dancing Nancies, Warehouse, Typical Situation, 41...so many good ones!

American Baby ahead of The Stone makes me want to cry, but personal opinions, right? ;)

This will be a good follow. Hoping to see a lot of Before These Crowded Streets near the top.

I love Digging a Ditch fwiw. Satellite was an amazing song back in 95, it just got overplayed terribly. I'm still mad my favorite song got eaten by Everyday. Boo.

Love that they brought back the You Look Wonderful Tonight interpolation this tour, it is so awesome.

Saw them at Jones Beach Theatre last night. Not my favorite band but they always put on a good show and give it there all.

LIOG Radio City is soooo good. Probably in my Top 20.

At 34, you have AB. Did you really mean AB Intro?
ABI is a great tune, so is AB. I'd welcome an actual ABI-->AB addition to the rotation. They do ABI into a ton of things these days, similar to what they are doing with PNP this tour....no longer does PNP = Rapunzel next :lmao:

Nope, AB.
Curious what year you first saw the band live? And had you been a fan for awhile before seeing them?

If I have my timeline correct, I have been a fan since 1995. I went to the Outer Banks on vacation with friends that summer, and one of them had Under the Table, and that was the first time I had ever heard DMB. I was immediately hooked and bought everything through Big Whiskey... after that, my interest was diverted, so I'm not as familiar with the last 3 albums.

Not sure when I first saw them live... in the mid 1990s, not sure which year. I think the last time I saw them live was 2008.

Hate being a debbie downer, but man I miss the days when they used to tour. No way am I dropping that type of coin to be somewhere I really don't want to be just to hear them again.
 It's an awesome place and so much fun.
I don't do all inclusive resorts. Not my thing anymore. Now if they stop by the little beach town in Costa Rica where I'll be during that time, sign me up. Saw them in New Hampshire last night. Pretty meh setlist. Liked the show they had in NJ last week a lot more. We had almost an hour delay b/c of thunder storms. The entire lawn about 20 minutes before the show start had to go back to there cars. while it poured. Like resorts, lawn tickets are something I'll never do anymore.

Wouldn't that be nice. And that's not even including Granny, Pig and Crash ;). I'd throw So Damn Lucky in there in place of some of the others you listed. One of my favorite Dave and Tim songs and hearing it for the 1st time last night with the whole band, they did a nice job. PNC show started and ended really nicely. WWYS, Recently, Granny, Crash, LIOG to start and Bartender, Say Goodbye, Grace, Typical Situation, Billies, YMDT to end before encore is very good.

So the 16th or 17th. I'd agree the 17th is an average set, but the 16th was bonkers. At least on the 17th they played Break For It, been a minute since they played that.

Ha, I went to the 16th, but looking at the 17th, I wish that I went to that one. I think we just might have different taste. Ants, Minarets, Nancies, #41, Watchtower, Rapunzel, Crush as the closer (they did close twice with that last year at the shows I attended so not thrilling but at least I've had a year to let that settle) and those are just the bangers. I would've taken that. That's pretty solid.
Not as good as the PNC show in NJ but still solid.

Curious, what's your age? I'm 47 and grew up with them from about 95 to 04 so I heavily favor the stuff from that stretch.

:lmao: Sugar Will liberation makes it an easy choice IMO, add in Pig, JTR, Just Breathe, Ditch, and Stolen Away...yes please.
Curious, what's your age? I'm 47 and grew up with them from about 95 to 04 so I heavily favor the stuff from that stretch.
51 and have been following since Under the table dropped. I took a pause around Busted Stuff, but have revisited it and really love all of it. I know BTCS is the "best" album, but I really love Come Tomorrow, Away From the World, Big Whiskey, Stand up...lol. I love the evolution of the band and their sound.

I'm also one of the weird ones, and I really only listen to DMB and prefer live stuff by a wide margin, which is why I rip all the Sirius Shows.

ETA I think there are really 2 groups of DMB fans. The Pre-Busted Stuff fans and the Post-Busted Stuff fans that then add to the full catalog fans.

I like seeing Lying in the Hands of God there at number 26. Definitely one of the major standouts from their last really good album (and their only truly above average album this century, unless we can count the Lillywhite Sessions).

Rather than get a bunch of nested quotes throughout the countdown, I'll just repeat my previous post and add to it each time.
