DONE DEAL: Randy Moss to Vikings trade (1 Viewer)

In his last 12 games with NE, Moss put up only 34-560-9.
And the last three games in particular provided huge evidence of a shift away from Moss. Even if we toss out the Monday Night game and say they weren't going to use Moss because they planned to trade him they weren't making a concerted effort to get him the ball a lot in Weeks 2 and 3 either. They are morphing into a two-TE offense with Hernandez being the wild card receiver. Moss still held a valuable role because of the attention he commanded and how he drew coverage deep while opening up the underneath routes for Welker in particular. I think this is where the deal comes with the greatest risk for the Patriots. Will defenses still give those underneath routes to Welker or will they look to crowd him and force Brady to throw elsewhere?Moss, meanwhile, becomes the clear No. 1 WR on a team with a stud RB. His fantasy potential has gone through the roof. I think it's highly unlikely he has a 1-target game as he had in Week 4 and I think the chances of him catching two passes per game regularly as he did in Weeks 2 and 3 are remote as well.

Favre is not afraid of INTs. That will definitely work in Moss's favor as he will continue to draw double teams. I am certain Brett will target him early and often regardless.

Also, I know everyone has brought up how well Miami covered Moss MNF but I really didn't see it. Moss could have owned Vonta and company had he been given a chance. He was open more often than not and we all know who wins that jump ball.

Moss started to be phased out as anything more than a red zone target at the end of last year. This IMO makes him the top 2 receiver we all thought he would be the rest of the way.

Agreed. The Dolphins didn't take Moss out of the game plan. He was never in the game plan to begin with and now we know why. The Patriots weren't going to risk Moss getting injured when they were trying to trade him.

Bruschi likes the deal. "time for him to go", locker room grumblings, distraction, young impressionable team doesn't need the poor example.
Jesus. Not even a month ago Patriot fans were using some clips showing Randy Moss in the locker room as evidence that he is not what you are describing. But now Randy Moss is no longer a Patriot

Welker will draw much more attention which means both TEs, Edelman, and Tate will see more targets.

Yeah, no kidding. They sure know how to circle the wagons in NE.

Yeah, but the majority of those were with Cassel. Also, it's extremely unfair to measure stats when for many plays he was used as a decoy.I think the Pats did the right thing here, but to say they did the right thing because Moss is overhyped or no longer a great WR is just wrong. If it's the right decision, it's purely from the standpoint of an organization that doesnt want to extend someone's contract at the price he's demanding and is worried he will contaminate an atmosphere with a lot of young, talented, impressionable players. The Boston media that thinks that Moss is not necessary because the Patriots have Tate (and yes, there are many here that are saying that) are ridiculous.

For Moss owners - Revis is back at practice today for the Jets.
Like I said, Favre is not afraid of INTs. Revvis will need to play the game of his life to keep Randy down this week. Yet another reason to trade him before this week's game. Revvis probably will manage to hold him under 75 yards which will seriously dampen his value.

per @realpatriots, Official New England Patriots Twitter...

Bill Belichick:

"Over the course of the past several months, I have spoken with Randy and his representative about Randy's place on our team and his future in football. Consistent with my dealings with Randy from the day we acquired him through our conversation this morning it has been honest, thoughtful and with great mutual respect. While I will keep private the details of internal conversations with players and staff, suffice it to say that many things were taken into consideration before making the trade. In this business, there are complex and often difficult decisions but it is my responsibility to make them based on what I feel is best for our football team in both the short term and long term. I wish him the very best for the remainder of his Hall of Fame career."

Moss is averaging 35 receiving yards per game. If he got 74 on Monday Night his value would soar. :lmao:

Apologies if someone already mentioned this, haven't read through all 760 posts in here.

Moss has already played 4 games. The Vikings already had their bye so have 13 games left. Which means if he doesn't miss any games as a Viking, Moss will play in 17 regular season games this year instead of the normal 16. Anyone know if that would be a record? I suppose it could have happened before in the same fashion, but haven't ever heard of it before.

I know, it's amazing, I didn't know he annoyed me so until now! I feel Moss free!! I just hope Tate and Price are the real deal. OR THEY"RE GONE TOO. :excited:

This move is curious in that the Pats may be stockpiling picks and a good team down the road, but Brady may be at the end of the line by the time they are back to being a force (if they get to that point).
Right. This is the problem. BB struck gold with Brady and unless he's mainlining HGH every night (well, we just don't know whether he is or not) then he will begin his senescence sooner than later. The guy is 33 right now, for christsakes. So BB would rather spend that time getting more draft picks? Or using Brady to his fullest? What would you do?
Listen to what you're saying...Brady is 33.How old is Favre?

QBs are playing until they're 40...and they are performing at a high level. The Pats "window" with Brady is a lot larger than people think.

This year is the transition year for the NE D. Tons of young talent trying to learn the system. It will happen. Maybe we don't see this gel until the end of the year, but this D will continue to improve.

Now add all the picks coming.

And watch for the next NE "buy low" opportunity. It's rinse and repeat with these guys.

THe present and future look pretty damn good to me.
QBs aren't playing until 40. ONE QB is. Are you basing Tom Brady playing to 40 based on Brett Favre? :excited: Additionally I never said Brady would retire before the age of 40. I said he would degrade. Are you really questioning this? It's always a transition year for NE lately. BB had a 5 year plan starting in 2000. I remember hearing the early championships were never supposed to happen and that the real Patriots to be unleashed in 05-06. Now that BB had his 18-1 choke in 2007, they made the playoffs once and are 0-1. Since then at the beginning of every season, Patriot fans say they are going to win it. However sometime during the season the party line changes from that to it being a retooling season, or rebuilding season, or transitional season. They were never supposed to compete, blah, blah, blah. Perhaps they should try to compete?

Well yeah, playing in 17 games would be a record. WORST he could do is tie a record...lol. Although probably by 2012-2013 every player will be playing an 18-game season anyway...so that record would fade into history. :excited:

I was shocked hearing the news but have since come to my senses.

Let's face it - as much as I want it to happen the Patriots are not a true SB-contender with a young team in rebuidling (or transition) mode (or whatever you which to call it).

Tom Brady was signed for the long-haul. Next years draft is talented and the Patriots now own 2 picks in each of the first four rounds which makes for the influx of talented young players to continue. Now it's all about surrounding TB with enough talent for another succesful run contending for the SB.

2011 is a very good draft class. The Pats now have the ammo to address needs even more. The team couldn't have kept Randy beyond this season. Also, a rookie salary cap is bound to be in a place after CBA negotiations have been finalized. That would mean that the Patriots would be young, talented and salary-wise in very good shape. That would allow for some shrewd free-agent signings on top of the youth movement.

Would I loved to have Moss for this year? Yes, noone can deny his ability to stretch the field. This will make our offense lack a dimension. Using stats to prove Moss is useless is silly since he opens up things elsewhere.

Would I have done this move if given the chance? Absolutely. Pats get some added value back for a player that's a bit long in the tooth and a possible locker-room distraction. Certianly, he would not be re-signed anyway because of the financial implications.

In summary: I'm a fan for life and this gives my team another chance to be competitive in the future and that I'm all for.

I don't understand this. He has played Moss well over the past two years, why would he need to have the game of his life? He just needs to be healthy, IMO.

New England traded a 4th for Randy Moss and now trades him for a 3rd.

Minnesota traded Randy Moss for a 1st and now trades a 3rd for him.

The real losers...the Oakland Raiders.

So let's see. The Pats trade a 5th round pick to Oakland and get three years of one of the most elite wide receivers in football at a low salary. Then they trade this WR, who is nearing the end of his career, for a 3rd round pick.

There is a reason this is the best run organization in football, as much as I dislike them. They simply outthink everybody else.
They were lucky Al Davis is an idiot. A 5th? Moss pushed them into this latest trade though. They wouldn't have made the deal if he wasn't disgruntled. They again were lucky Minny is in desperate mode and willing to give a 3rd. Further more, what makes you think he's near the end of his career? He's still a major threat.
We often get separate posts that contradict each other, but here we have a rare sighting of the contradictory consecutive sentences!

Because Brady doesn't feel the need to throw into tight situations. He is the prototypical "take what the D gives you QB". In the past two years Revvis has covered Moss (not counting this year) Moss have averaged 9.75 targets per game. I expect his targets to be more in the 15-20 range Monday night.Could be wrong but I think Brett will try and force the ball to him Revvis or no. Unfortunately no recent stats on Favre against Revvis.

Now I know that this Randy isn't the same one that played for us before, but this team just made another HUGE step towards owning the NFC North for years to come. God I love this team.
With Brett Favre and Randy Moss you expect to own the NFC North for years to come? How many years do you think each has left?

In his last 12 games with NE, Moss put up only 34-560-9.
Pro-rated to 16 games, that's 45-746-12.Wow. Kind of shocked that it's that low.
Why pro-rate it? Why not just take the last 16 games instead of pro-rating the last 12? Could it be because those other 4 games he had 28 catches for 581 yards and 6 TDs?
Pro-rate his last game over 16 games and he's at 0-0-0 for the season. That is kind of low.

Great day for Minnesota sports fans!

Our wayward son is coming home and the Twins take on Sabbathia tonight at the new Target Field. That place will be even more electric now. And part of that buzz in the air will be Vikings/Moss talk. I'm betting there will be more than a few Moss jerseys in the stands.

Gotta love the ownership that is the Wilfs.

As soon as a guy leaves NE everyone sharpens their knives and stabs him in the back. That is NOT a franchise I would identify with or would want to support. My guess is that it comes down from Bellicheat.

This makes things really interesting and exciting for Packer fans. I am very happy to see Favre and Moss together in Minnesota - just for the great entertainment and anticipation value it brings. As most of us now know, one of the main points of disagreement between Favre and Ted Thompson was TT's failure to sign Moss (twice) when Favre went all-in publicly and privately to support that acquisition. I have two very painful memories of seeing Moss play at Lambeau - one was his coming out game his rookie year when I sat in the rain on a cold Monday night and watched the Vikings break the Packers near-record home winning streak behind (I believe) 3 Moss td's from Randall Cunningham. The second was when he mooned us in the playoff game - north end zone (although it happened directly in front of me, I did not see it live and had no idea until reading the papers the next day).

Oct. 24th will be a riot. I think I'm going to find a hotel room up there and make a night out of it. If recent experience is a guide, there will be an abundance of purple jerseys and goldilocks wigs in the bowl that night. already excited ...

Receiver Randy Moss and New England Patriots quarterbacks coach Bill O'Brien were involved in a heated exchange at halftime of the team's victory Monday over the Miami Dolphins, according to player sources.

The locker-room exchange, described as an "outburst" by one player, came two days before the Patriots traded Moss to the Minnesota Vikings for a 2011 third-round draft choice, and could have contributed to the team's decision to make the deal.

To me this was like waking up on Christmas morning. I can't believe we got one of my favorite players back that we should have NEVER let go and for a third!!!!! You've gotta realize that before Randy we had all sort of blackouts and after we haven't had one since. Now I know that this Randy isn't the same one that played for us before, but this team just made another HUGE step towards owning the NFC North for years to come. God I love this team.
I believe there were a few games very close to being blacked out in the past few years (not last year) weren't there?Several they got extensions from the NFL.
This is true and I can think of at least two weeks for sure two years back when it came down to the wire and the many MN based fortune 500 corporations bailed them out. However, that '98 team really helped change the landscape in the Twin Cities and we've been mostly a football town since then. Even with the Twins(a team I've loved before it was cool to love them) getting ready to start a playoff run in their new digs the town is a buzz with Randy talk.

per Adam Schefter:

Turns out trade involved another pick: In trade today for Randy Moss, Minnesota also got back a 7th-round pick in 2012 from New England.

Isn't that typical protocol for most teams?

So, no bye week for Moss. Does he play this week?
This keeps getting asked and I have no idea why. Just plain dumb.
Yes, I know it's incredibly dumb. Just wondering seeing as he played Monday night, and is going to a new team with a new playbook, players, etc, if they would maybe not sit him, but ease him in. Do we pencil him in for 150 yds and 3 td's? I think it's a valid question, seeing as he was scheduled to be on a bye.

Off Topic. I kinda liked it better when it wasn't cool to like the Twins. GO TWINS!
