Explosions in Manchester? (1 Viewer)

It's alright, just hate when you (and, to be fair, others) do it while the story is still developing.  There's a thread for that type of argument, and it's relative here, but in the first few hours, I think it's better to get the news out there first.  Ignore the guys immediately doing the anti-Islam shtick if you can until tomorrow or something.  That's my personal preference, I don't want to tell you how to do things though - that's not my call.  Cheers either way.
Well not really. But thanks.

Fareed Zakeria pointing out that as ISIS is losing on the battlefront, we can expect more attacks, not less. That's always been the terrible calculus.

WTF CNN. Two top stories tonight on their 25 person panel. 1) Manchester 2) CNN reporting that Trump contacted other top intelligence officials to have them push back on the Russia story. Not sure about others here, but that looked completely insensitive to the terrorist attack that they should be covering. The Trump story doesn't matter tonight.

Can we give the Trump reporting a rest for one night with such tragedy?

Some disagreement on the news here about how easy it is to make a homemade bomb. One guy earlier said that anybody can do it; now a guy says it's very difficult.

I refuse to accept this as an inevitability, and I refuse to give in to bigoted solutions such as already suggested in this thread (unfortunately).

Perhaps we can't win the war against terrorism but we can fight it; and we have to. We need better information. We need informants to figure out what's going to happen beforehand. It seems to me that is the key.
The war on islamic terrorism is useless in its current state. We need to really start addressing the root causes. We need to win the hearts and minds of Muslim youth. It will take time and there are no easy solutions.

I wish that were possible.  I don't know the answer but a lot has to do with the way someone is raised.  When our good friends the Saudis are bringing up children to hate in madrasas all across the country, I don't see an end anytime soon.  They aren't the only reason or source, but it's just one example.
Also, maybe don't have a foreign policy that relies on oil from the middle East and propping up brutal regimes that treat their citizens horribly which drives them into the waiting arms of islamofascists who hate the west.

The US is a net exporter of oil and NG.  Any other dumb ### comments you want to throw out here?

Sorry, no more politics from me in this thread.

Extremely sad story. These things happen and it makes my blood boil like everyone else and I want massive retribution. Humanity is capable of so much good, and yet so much terrible evil. How does a parent explain that to their kids?

Being a net exporter doesn't conflict his statement.  Simmer down
The ME is not a green/red button problem.  The statement was farcical and deserved ridicule, particularly in the face of real time tragedy that we're seeing.

I disagree with you. Here's what I think: there are evil people out there, extremists. Some of them are also mentally ill. These people use their religious beliefs as justification for their evil. But if the religion didn't exist, they'd find another justification. The evil is with them.
When you have the wind at your back of a supernatural directive, coupled with a lack of opportunity and the chance to make your family a few bucks, I think mental illness is far down the list of root causes.

I step over plenty of mentally ill in New York, very rarely do they detonate themselves

You're absolutely right that it's multifaceted, but we have to look at what we can actually effect.

Anyways, I'm done. I meant no harm.

Thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families. ?

I did make the point that first they were evil, and also mentally ill. Most mentally ill people aren't also evil.

On the first that's a discussion for later once facts come in.

On the second, so am I.  Go hug your kids.  I did.

Sure, its not the time or place for either post.  Or my own probably.  You're both good posters, just saying let's deal with it another time

Then why is Cheeto Jesus rushing to Saudi Arabia to kiss the ring? Why are we selling them billions in weapons?
Kushner high-fiving McMaster for the sale to Saudi Arabia of $110 billion in weapons is not a good optic for those wanting to combat terrorism. As more Yemeni civilians die of Saudi air strikes on hospitals and markets, new terrorists will be inspired. There is no easy solution, but we'll get blamed for Saudi excesses.

Stop going to church and supporting their hypocrisy.

To get this thread back on track

Manchester police reports that:

Death toll now stands at 22

Single perpetrator, single explosion, perpetrator died during the attack

Likely a suicide bomb (described as an improvised explosive device), they are trying to determine if anyone else was involved (cell, network)

Neither the victims nor the perpetrator has been identified

There are children among the victims

ETA: Video now up at BBC Live updtes, not showing the explosion , but there is clearly only one explosion

Awful.  Equally awful is the nerds in here arguing politics when there are a bunch of still warm dead children.

Seeing the British Prime Minister on CNN right now calling this a terrorist attack.  Has anyone claimed responsibility yet?  Presumably ISIS?

I've never really understood claiming responsibility - almost every other criminal tries to hide or get away with crimes without being outed.  Is this just a recruitment tool?

No and you are a right wing lunatic for questioning CNNs right to switch stories around. People need to know how dangerous Trump is and how he is destroying our Nation.  How will they know if we don't tell them between our Manchester incident coverage?

that's probably it. they probably weren't even involved but if nobody claims responsibility within say the first 24 hours they'll claim it was them. buncha losers

Well, you don't want the IRA taking credit for something one of your guys blew themselves up for.

Imam Qari Asim MBE, Imam of Leeds Makkah Mosque and independent member of the government's Anti-Muslim Hatred Working Group, said the victims "are very much in our thoughts and prayers"."This was an attack on all of us," he added."We absolutely condemn the barbaric acts of an individual determined to spread hate and prejudice across the world."The senseless murder of innocents is utterly deplorable."We must not let them win by creating the divisions they so desperately seek to sow."

They do not view their actions as criminal.  For them, their actions are a source of pride and honor.  There is no reason to hide.

sidebar to this young lady's account shows "Prayers for Manchester" as trending - i checked it out, and kinda regret it ... a few pictures of victims (not carnage shots), one girl looked to be around my daughter's age (11 or so), smiling in her glasses  :(  unfathomable horror for those families, i can't even begin to imagine the level of pain they are all experiencing.
