Back a bit to the 80s...

Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out (International Song - England)

Big fan of Joe Jackson. Seems like he really fell off the face of the earth once the 80's ended, which is a shame because he put out good stuff. His "Live 80-86" album is really good.

I'm sure we've had this conversatino before- but I used to also be a big fan. saw him live a bunch early on whenever he'd come through SF (even trekked out to the Concord Pavilion and somewhere down the peninsula... maybe San Jose to see him)

I'd put his first 3 albums up against any other band's first three pop albums, even though most people didn't love Beat Crazy (I did). The guy was a master pop songwriter. I especially loved Jumpin' Jive (which, IMO, kickstarted the whole "swing" thing, particularly on the west coast as highlighted in the movie Swingers). I lost interest when he started going more "adult contemporary", IIRC, after Night and Day. He was still putting together nice songs- but seemed way more background or movie-soundtracky to me. I've completely lost track of his newer stuff- but was aware that he kept cranking along.

You'd probably like "Rain" then.

just listened- nope, i don't. interesting to hear some the musical and lyrical themes still there from the early days- but I found this one to be a major yawner. what I'd expect a 60ish guy to put out as a pop album, or maybe an arthritis commercial.

I was a wee harsh with the first opinion... 2nd go-round is a bit better. some tracks that are less sleepy, even if they usually side-step from a good hook into a bad bridge or chorus or vice-versa. 1977 was a long, long time ago. The concerns of the middle aged are different from those of angry, young men. I really don't want to hear Jackson singing "I can't remember where I put my keys" to the melody of "Is she really going out with him".

I can understand why bands tend to get locked into their old sound. Audiences want to hear the hits and touring and merch sales is what pays these days. But singer/songwriters have lower overhead and less need for committee decisions. I want to hear them evolve.

I mimic the accent, especially on spoken songs. Several years ago I was at some bar that was having Karaoke night, and I attempted to mimic Roger Waters while singing "Brain Damage/Eclipse." I'm not sure if I sounded good or bad, but my martinis were good.

As usual, I have no plan for mixes, just taking songs I like. I don't want to break my self imposed draft rules, so I wanted to get a song that actually mentions a sports team. The rub is, I could only come up with one. Sure, he didn't have to use his AK, but the Lakers also beat the Supersonics.
