**Fake Scarcity Mixtape Draft #1: Tuesday picks 12 & 4PM EDT (2 Viewers)

Did we ever do the degrees of separation draft?
What was that one again?
I thought we discussed doing one where you linked the picks to each other, either from bands/artists playing together, collaborating, touring etc...

i.e. I could take Nirvana with my first song, then Foo Fighters with my next (Dave Grohl link), then Queens of the Stone Age (Grohl) then Them Crooked Vultures (Homme link) then Led Zeppelin (JPJ link), etc... A scarcity twist would be we all start with the same artist and have to branch out from there.

It's very possible I was the only one who wanted to do it.
Certainly challenging, but I like it.
I thought of a couple of ways to add more variation:

1. Use the opening artist like a domino (roll me over, there you go) and allow a single drafter to branch out in two directions.

2. Allow connections (e.g. song title, producer, theme) other than just band membership.

These drafts are always a learning experience. For example: I didn't realize how many bands had siblings in them, there were a couple bands I thought were from the US but were in fact from England :bag: , and how many songs about drugs don't actually mention the drug.
The last one is not too surprising because for a long time, overt drug references meant no radio airplay.
Hey, i never said I thought these things through...

Makes complete sense, it was one of those categories I assumed would be easier due to the topic. I also am not a lyrics guy so these things always catch me off guard.

4.12 Pharaohs - SBTRKT (Featuring Roses Gabor).

Sports team name - Kings (Los Angeles, Sacramento, whatever).

I've been listening to this one on a near loop lately.

I had no idea this was used in Grand Theft Auto 5 - just found that out now reading the comments on the video (which I'd also never seen until now). I still like the song anyway.

Yeah, I think we'd have have to find other connections than just proper band membership together. Collaborations would open things up a bit. You could draft "All for One" 1.01 and go in so many directions with Sting/Rod Stewart/Bryan Adams. You'd have at least one awful song in your mix though.

I had this one and the Billy Bragg song Eephus took this morning as my only options for this category so I better grab this one now:

4.xx Pogues - Down All The Days (sports nickname - Glasgow Rangers)

I have often had to depend upon

The kindness of strangers
But I've never been asked and I never replied
If I supported the Glasgow Rangers

I claim the Adams -> Mel C -> Spice Girls path from there

I am on mobile so I will link this song later. Didn't realize how difficult it would be to mention a team and not an athlete in a non-rap song.

One For the Razorbacks - Green Day

yeah... that was my fall-back.

but I seriously doubt anybody snipes my intended pick for this one.

Crowded House "Weather With You" Nuclear Family.

Had to be a bit specific on this one, because the Finn brothers (Tim (Vocals) and Neil (Guitar - from The Split Enz)) weren't on all of the Crowded House albums together. Some of the songs for the album "Woodface" came from sessions that the Finn Brothers worked on together, outside of CH.

From Wiki:

Once these sessions (with Tim) were complete, Neil teamed back up with Nick Seymour and Paul Hester to write and record Crowded House's third album. Capitol Records rejected most of the new Crowded House songs, so Neil asked Tim if the band could use some of the new Finn Brothers songs. Tim agreed, on condition that he would join the band, although he has since indicated he meant this as a joke. Whatever the truth of that claim, the group that returned to the studio included Tim as a full band member.

Sonova

Wasn't going to take that song, but something from them.

Do it for a different category! ;)

Question on the 'Pop' category. Does the song need to be currently (or near currently) popular, or can it just be a pop song that fits those categories?

any time, any official Billboard list from any week available ...ever
There are a lot of terrible songs on those lists.
actually true- Taylor Swift has been making it rain on there since the mid 70s.
:X

All the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate...
girl's got a way with words.

actually don't mind/hate-hate-hate her. writes catchy as hell pop-tunes... pretty brilliant, really, given how hard it must be to capture lighting so many times. my 7yo and 3yo kids are fans, and they've got ok tastes. here's their latest fave.
NV will be happy to know my daughter is all over that Brandon Flowers album, but she's 23

what does she think about Check Meowt?

Hootie and the Blowfish "I Only Wanna Be With You" (sports team- Dolphins)

This band gets a bad rap but I don't care; I like them. plus this song gets bonus points for stealing lyrics from a couple of Dylan songs.

I'm not a big U2 fan nor a big Hootie fan. When I say I'm not a big U2 fan it is relative to their massive popularity. When I say I'm not a big Hootie fan, it is much more objective.

U2 I can take or leave (actually I do like Gloria and I Will Follow). Hootie I can leave.

Lots of cool music here that I wasn't familiar with, enjoying my first draft quite a bit...even if my musical interests seem a bit out of the strike zone of the general drafting radius.

I unabashedly, unironically love almost everything Brandon Flowers does... Also spotlighting here, but this was who I was referring to when I said I may take a song released last week.
