Fast Casual Restaurants - Firehouse Subs (1 Viewer)

I work in an area that has:

Subway

Domino's Pizza

Quizno's

McDonald's

Jack In the Box

About 4-5 different sushi/teriyahi places, all of which are basically the same place.

I avoid McDonald's, unless it's breakfast (very rarely). I make a protein shake probably 6 days/week.

I avoid Domino's as well... Probably eat their pizza a couple of times/year, and it's usually pretty "meh."

I'm honestly not sure I ever want to go to Quizno's again. It's usually not nearly as good as it sounds, and a medium sandwich is $10-12. Add chips/drink, it's $15. Not worth half that.

Jack In the Box is good for drunken 2-for-a-dollar tacos, and that's about it.

So, if I'm picking up lunch during the week, it's usually Subway or chicken teriyaki. At least I know what I'm getting with either one. The teriyaki places have decent lunch menus ($7-10 for chicken teriyaki, Mongolian beef, or a combo of the two). And, while Subway isn't the best, it's not terrible, either (I understand that I might be in the minority on this). My "go to" sandwich is the Italian BMT, loaded with veges. For about $7, it's a better alternative than spending twice that at Quizno's, and having heartburn for the next 8 hours.

This place needs more food options BADLY.
Sounds like even if there were more food options near you, you wouldn't like them.
I'm really not very picky. But, for an area that was fairly recently developed (last 10-15 years), the food options don't stand out to me as very good. Would love to see a Chipotle/Qdoba, Five Guys, or any sub place that is not Quizno's (other than Subway, which there are two of within 5 minutes of my work). Heck, I'd be happy to see Wendy's, Arby's, or Taco Bell.

On the flipside, I drove an extra 10-15 minutes the other day, just to check out Whole Foods. Was impressed with the number of quick lunch options that they had. Probably slightly overpriced (and it's not the type of place that I frequent), but all in all pretty good. Had a couple of chicken tacos for like $6. That's pretty good, price-wise, for this area.

I haven't been to Jimmy John's in quite some time, but I was a big fan 5+ years ago. Has quality deteriorated? or were my taste buds just garbage back then?

justed wanted to say that offering up a gas station seems sketchy, but I am mildly impressed with Sheetz' food everytime I go.

Not sure, but I have eaten there twice. Both times (different locations) the bread was incredibly tough and it was more lettuce than anything else. I couldn't even get pickles on my sandwich.

I like Jimmy Johns overall. If you aren't getting the "Giant Club Sandwiches" I think they wouldn't have enough meat. My wife is a huge fan of their multi-grain bread or whatever they call it that isnt sub like.

It will always have a special place in my heart b/c it was the first that I'm aware of to allow me to order food without having to talk to a human being. Down vote b/c everyone I've been to has never had spicy brown mustard; just the yellow mustard.

Not a Jimmy Johns fan either. Went there a while back just completely over hyped and mediocre.
One nice thing about JJ is their delivery. Being able to get a pretty good sandwich delivered quickly is sweet.
I live about 3 miles from 2 different Jimmy John's. Neither will deliver to me. :kicksrock:

I used to like the Italian at wawa's well enough and then looked at the sodium one day online. It was like 985% of your daily value -- no exaggeration. Enough sodium to choke a bear. And I was wondering why I had headaches.

Never been back. The amount of sodium in their bread alone is staggering.

Just realized there is a Lenny's less than 2 miles from the office. Excited to give it a go. This thread has been helpful.

Wawa is a notch above subway. Nothing special. They are pretty cheap though.

Is anyone else like me and hesitant to try new places because you fear running into some complicated, quirky ordering system you don't have the patience to deal with?

Yes. I'm a simple man. It's hard for me to order something new once I find something I like.

When I was a regular there, they sliced the meats and cheese to order. Like Goodcents, but higher quality stuff.I recommend getting the Hot Pepper Relish on the side and add it to taste yourself. It's good stuff, but can overwhelm a sandwich in too much volume.

They might have incentives for downloading their app or following them on social media, so if you like paying less than full price for stuff, check that out ahead of time. For a while they sent out discounts every Wednesday on FB/Twitter - it reached a point where I would walk in on Wednesday and the manager would ask me, "What is the Social Wednesday deal this week?"

Report Back!

Be sure and try the red/hot pepper relish! It's not terribly spicy but it's so good. Good salt & vinegar chips too... which are hard to find down here in the south.

I was going to suggest maybe getting the relish on the side if you're new. It's potent stuf. Good call.

####, I guess it's a lenny's italian for me today!

A Noodles and Company is being built close to my place. Any good?
Had one a month or so ago for the first time.

It was ok...not great, not terrible.

Though, probably terribly full of sodium like most crap these days.
I've eaten there a couple of times on the road with my family. We liked it a lot, and it definitely brings something different than the usual quick places. I had one of the Thai dishes and the Indonesian peanut, which were both decent. Obviously not as good as a decent Thai place, but those usually take longer, are more expensive, and the kids have trouble finding things they like at them. Here, they had different options. I guess I had low expectations, because I was pleasantly surprised by the herbs, crisp veggies, and slice of lime that all looked bright and fresh - the dish actually looked like the picture on the menu, which seems to be a rarity at quick places. And it was very reasonable priced, especially for the amount of food you get.

I also liked that you order and can sit instead of standing around for the food, but they bring it to you very quickly and are quick to clean up after you when you leave. I tried to leave a small tip on the table since we were leaving a mess, but was told right away thanks but they don't accept tips.

I couldn't see eating there that often, but it's not a bad place at all for the occasional lunch.

We have one near us that is a favorite of our medium aged kids (with 3 pre-teens, easy agreement is a wondrous thing!!!). It is very quick, and the menu is wide enough for everyone in the family. Agree with jhib that the sit down is nice, especially if you do a semi busy time with family.

I see it as more of a quick service dinner than a lunch. Although I might go if I had one near an office, since I am a noodle-holic. :bag:

I walked in Firehouse, and immediately turned around when I noticed they had one of those new coke machines. I want no part of that thing. I am terrified.

I haven't seen one, but that sounds like the kind of thing I'd like to avoid. Some places you walk in and there's customers standing in like three different groups at different stages of the ordering process and I know right off I'm going to have to spend a half hour figuring it out before I go in for lunch. It's like jumping into a double dutch jumprope situation.

Agreed. Love places that do online ordering (Like Chipotle and Five guys.) Makes life so much simpler.

Are you guys joking about the Coke machines? It's a touch screen with giant pictures.
Love those things. Had a peach Sprite recently that was real good.

It's easy. 1) Push lever with your cup for ice.

2) Set the cup down inside by the lever.

3) Touch the screen for your main drink type and follow each sub-menu to the flavor you want. Dr. Pepper > Dr. Pepper Cherry Vanilla.

4) Push the button to dispense. Done.

It's easy.1) Approach machine and slowly begin to lose a grip on reality as you feel it staring into your soul.
Fixed

In Pittsburgh there are so many Mom & Pop pizza places and the hoagies, steak, meatball and hot sausage sandwiches they make blow away any of the national chains.
