My song today is from Willis Alan Ramsey, who I'm sure some of you haven't heard of. He's a legend in some circles for putting out one and only one album, in 1972, that was a huge critical success. And then he basically disappeared. For years and years, people covered his songs, sometimes with great commercial success, but he was just...gone. Then suddenly about 20 years ago he turned up again in Texas playing occasional shows and allegedly working on a new album. 50 years after release of his first album, the second one is still "in the works." He's a huge cult figure in Americana.

In addition to the song I chose, which is the most beautiful love song I've ever heard, I love Geraldine and the Honeybee, Ballad of Spider John (famously covered by Jimmy Buffett), and Muskrat Candlelight (yes, famously covered by Captain and Tennille).

Truth Hurts was an easy choice for me to make this list.

Lizzo, for those who haven't heard her (I don't know how many that could be), is like the young, female, rap version of Warren Zevon. One of the few writers I've run into who can actually, truly, write funny lyrics, and she delivers them with a chuckle as well, sort of like Zevon. Over the last couple of years I've seen so many situations where some supposedly well-meaning, enlightened dude does something completely idiotic, sexist, racist, or what-have-you, and thought to myself, "Why men great till they gotta be great."

I saw him in the early 90s and was infatuated with her on the stage both musically and how she looked twirling around in her sundress.

I know of Lizzo but none of her songs, so I look forward to this one!

I had no idea who Lizzo was, until my 13 yo daughter had a friend with an extra ticket to go see her in Portland.....this was like a couple weeks ago.....my wife and I proceeded to listen. Not my cup o tea, and I thought she was kinda vulgar, but I guess she's sposed to be girl power, and all that.....which I'm fine with, as long as the message is good. Not into the whole Cardi B type thing...... I dunno, my daughter went, and they had a good time.....her friends mom was there with em.....really, her first real concert. We tried to prepare her for the folks who come out of the woodwork for shows, if you know what I mean. She didn't really care for all the ganja smoke. I told her every show I've ever been to, theres people smokin

I love that Petty is pretty much owning this thing!

I thought Megadeth was a no-go because Nick Menza was born in Germany? Wake up Dead is awesome though! Good choice....That whole album is great.

Lizzo's message, for the most part, is actually quite positive. It's mostly, "I feel great, and you should feel great no matter how you look. And also here's another song about how we should all feel great together." And, she's hilarious, and amazingly talented, especially with the flute.

Lizzo is played a lot on the AAA channels I listen to. She's really talented.

Utimatley, that's why we let our daughter go.....she's pretty mature at 13. She knows who she is. I don't worry about her being influenced by celebrities one way, or another. I'm glad to know that Lizzo sending mostly positivity out there......on initial listen her stuff sounded kinda trashy, honestly......but maybe I'm just getting old! I've never really been one to enjoy the derogatory side of hip hop..... especially towards women.

My version here is the Ten Minute Version that appeared on the Taylor’s Version of Red.

The short film is available here, but it includes an argument scene not in the song itself.

I mentioned earlier a Swift song that caused me to do a 180 on Taylor Swift, and this is that song.

Love the lyrics in this one as a lot of well-crafted lines, and paints a picture of a romance that falls apart that I think the short film captures.

Shreds so hard. I love when the time signature changes and they start chanting for backing vocals. There's no other way to put that, and it sounds ridiculous, but that's indeedy what they do. I forget sometimes how much I absolutely loved thrash during its apex of underground popularity. I still do.

Thumbs up to whoever picked this one.

Boston following it on the playlist is an A+ transition. The vibe? Wood paneling. Lots of it.

The intro alone makes this record great. That piano rumble always reminded me of the music that would play in silent movies when the bad guy would tie the heroine to the railroad tracks (not a euphemism). It also always reminded me of thunder on the horizon. Then the drums lock in along with that sinister guitar-and-strings line - bad news on the way, everyone.

This, to me, is the best Gamble & Huff production. They had figured out what they wanted their records to sound like, but hadn't yet ossified into their more strident period a few years later. Eddie Levert and Walter Williams just annihilate their vocals. The lyrics are straight-up paranoid - or, are they? Anyone who's ever been in a relationship where things don't add up knows what the O'Jays are feeling here.

Aimed straight at your back
And I don't think they'll miss
 
My top 5 from round 23 excluding my own choice:
As I have previously noted, Tom Petty is among my top 5 favorite all-time artists, so I'm loving the Petty song choices. However, I found this round to be weaker than most for my taste, pending listening to the playlist to hear the songs I don't know by title. Hope some of those songs change that opinion.

He's recorded everything else he ever did 9 million times. Dave Mason's another who does this. Also, every country artist from the 50s and 60s. Be very wary buying collections in truck stops or Cracker Barrels if you're beholden to the originals.

I took tomorrow off and I told the wifey that I'm going there early but I am NOT getting in the eternal, soul crushing, fuel line, nope, nope, nope. I'll use kerosene or walk but I'm not spending the other half of my day in that fuel line.

You both have excellent musical taste. . . j/k. . mostly! :) I think I've mentioned this here before and I'll try to keep it brief but I still remember being labeled a "weirdo" and kind of a musical outcast for liking "that awful f-ing speed metal garbage." I mean, when I was on campus everyone seemed to hate it and when I went back home to my small dinky town, I would work summer jobs in factories and the blue collar crowd co-workers hated it just as much. I would get into arguments and then beg and plead for people to just listen to Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets because I thought those two albums along with Peace Sells and So far so good so what were all amazing albums. But man, people I knew back then were not having it and, I mean, heck we're talking mainstream stuff like Metallica and Megadeth, Anthrax, forget about stuff like Helloween, Slayer, Overkill, etc. I never thought in a MILLION years Metallica would take off and gain traction, I always thought they would be on the fringe at best. Shows you what I know!

I've always been musically agnostic. I remember my sister putting something in my car, she opened up the tape case (who opens up another man's tape case?) and her saying "You have Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Dokken, Metallica and then there's Chick Corea, Journey, Huey Lewis, The Beatles, The Doors, U2 and Steely Dan. . . did you hit your head or something?" Life's too short to pledge your allegiance to one style of music. Although I will admit that I hid my disco collection of Bee Gee's (and others) on unmarked tapes, I mean, I didn't want anyone getting the wrong idea about me! :)

I'm probly not going to listen to her music, as it's just not in my wheelhouse. I am, however, all about women being confident, and spreading that message......I think it's very easy for young women to think they have to look a certain way......or be pressured be society, and peers to look a certain way. I want my girl to be happy with herself

I drove by the fuel station on the way out and saw there was no line! What?! Maybe it's because gas prices went down a bit, but I was shocked. Unfortunately I had just filled my car up yesterday.
 
I favorited "Use Me" the first time it came up, so today I'll highlight "Move On Up" as my favorite from this list. Also a shout-out to "Me and Bobby McGee." Janis Joplin is someone I always feel like I should enjoy more than I do, but that particular song is a flat-out monster.

Lots I don't know, and I still haven't listened to the new-to-me songs from yesterday, so I have some catching up to do!

A couple years back when I was in grade 12 my English teacher had us analyze this song in class and we played it a zillion times over and over discussing what all the lyrics meant. Usually this would make me hate something (a song in this case) but it actually enhanced my enjoyment of the song as I had to actually listen to the lyrics and think about what they meant.

It was in consideration for my list but was a late cut.

Best new to me was one of today's double dips (and takes the bronze) - Goodbye, Emma Lou Harris. Since it was thrown out there twice in the exact same spot I suspect this was a hit and I didn't get a familiar since listening to it, but can't put my finger on it so it gets today's mark.

Today's other double dip takes the silver - Runnin Down a Dream

And since I won't give a medal to a song I already highlighted (Me & Bobby McGee) Foreplay/Long Time takes the gold.

There was also an Eagles song (briefly) on the shuffle today.

I didn't mean anything by any of this other than I don't listen to either Lizzo, or Taylor Swift.....just not really into em. No biggie, to each their own.....I have no doubt they are both talented individuals. My daughter likes em both.....not likely as role models, but if that were the case, she could choose much worse for sure.

When I picked Use Me in the This Is Their Best Song draft, I said:
