Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (3 Viewers)

Known:

Gold: Coat of Many Colors (Val) - sheer perfection
Silver: Gravity's Gone (Dr. O) - Mrs. Scorchy is 100 percent a Cooley Girl and this is her favorite. My DBT choice varies among 10-12 tracks depending on the day but Gravity's Gone is always in the rotation.
Bronze: Take Me With U (Simey) - I've listened to Purple Rain a zillion times. I've never seen the movie. :bag:

Unknown:

Gold: Use Me (Pip)
Silver: Truth Hurts (Dr Ian)
Bronze: Bar Ice (OH)

I think it's safe to ask: has any Tom Petty song not been chosen yet?

I know there is at least one Tom Petty song and one Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song (different artists 😬 ) remaining... because we haven't reached them in my list yet.

Tom Petty has nine more songs that haven't yet been posted.
There's a certain album that rhymes with mild showers that I'm assuming we will see represented heavily at some point.
It would wreck me if it weren’t.
I would tell you it's time to move on.......it's only a broken heart

Yankee23Fan:

The Gambler - Kenny Rogers
I loved this song so much when I was little, and got soooo excited when I was 7 and saw the commercials for Kenny Rogers as 'The Gambler' - airing soon on CBS. My mom let me stay up past my bedtime to watch it and I was rapt. Yet all I can remember about it now is a visual of Kenny Rogers sitting on a train as a desert landscape goes by. Maybe I should see if it's on Hulu.

Watched it the other day. Didn't age well.

This contest was like those old school fantasy drafts, you either got Marshall Faulk or you didn’t. Petty is the ultimate workhorse RB.
No Petty in my list. I have the same feeling as when I took Laurence Maroney in the first round.
LOL I meant the contest guessing most popular artist. Petty is scoring multiple times a day now and I know there’s some even bigger weeks to come. Sorry about your Maroney lol

My advice to you would be to keep that streak going.

I love Purple Rain. And I don't mean in a "so bad it's good" way. I mean, I love it.

Also it really is bad.

Caught up on yesterday's and today's "new to me" tracks. It was a tale of two cities, the best of times and the worst of times.

On yesterday's list, there weren't many I hadn't heard that I liked. As I suspected, I already knew the Funkadelic and Tennessee Ernie Ford songs, and I rate them both an A+, but I'm throwing them out as "not new to me." Of the actually new to me, Taneytown by Steve Earle was the clear standout. Filthy, filthy, filthy, in a good way (are there bad ways?). Like many others, I was also taken with the Karl Hendricks track. Still D.R.E. is one I've probably heard before, but I enjoyed a lot. Special shout-out to He Went to Paris! I don't listen to Jimmy Buffett as his voice irritates me for some reason, but this was a beautiful composition.

Today was hit after hit for me. "Best in class" awards go to Lizzo(!), whose track was hilarious and brilliant, and Neko Case's stunning Deep Red Bells. Wait, my top two were from female artists?!? What has become of me? Also a shout-out to a third female, Taylor Swift. I've probably heard one of her songs in passing without knowing it was her, but this thread is the first time I've knowingly put one of her songs on. It's not my cuppa, but I understand the hype. Massive talent. The Emmylou cover of "Goodbye" is brilliant, though I still prefer the original. Runner-up status to the Drive-By Truckers song. How does that guy sound exactly like Van Morrison in this song? It doesn't make any sense, yet he does.

I noticed that when Hawks put together the playlist, songs that were chosen twice got listed twice, including Emmylou twice in a row. :lmao: That's good shtick.

I'm done picking a favorite 5 each day, too agonizing.

Glad to see the Lizzo song here. Totally not my genre but I really like it. Have it in my ~1200 songs by ~1200 artists thread.

Speaking of which...so far 33 songs, not including my picks, from that thread have appeared here.

I was pleasantly surprised by it as well. It's from his first album, before he was Margaritaville dude, so it doesn't have the Buffetesque trappings that are usually associated with him. It wouldn't sound out of place on a James Taylor album from the same era.

Today's known-to-me winners:

Rusty Cage -- Soundgarden (Manster)
Foreplay/Long Time -- Boston (jwb)
Me and Bobby McGee -- Janis Joplin (Chaz)
Move on Up -- Curtis Mayfield (Shuke)
Runnin' Down a Dream -- Tom Petty (Falguy and Zegras11)
Backstabbers -- The O'Jays (Uruk-Hai)
Free Fallin' -- Tom Petty (Scorchy)
Coat of Many Colors -- Dolly Parton (Val Rannous)
Dream On -- Aerosmith (Just Win Baby)

Neko Case's stunning Deep Red Bells.
Even though you usually don't dig the female artists, I'm not surprised you like Neko's murder ballad. Her song is based on the Green River killings in Washington State. She grew up in Tacoma, and was in school during that time, and her and her friends were scared of the killer on the loose. She said the news always referred to the murdered women as prostitutes, and acted like they were unimportant as people, as did Gary Ridgway (the killer). Some of her lyrics touch on those women.

Where does this mean world cast its cold eye
Who's left to suffer long about you
Does your soul cast about like an old paper bag
Past empty lots and early graves
Those like you who lost their way
Murdered on the interstate
While the red bells rang like thunder

Preview of tomorrow, and you can take this to the bank:

- It's a Tom Petty-free day! No, really!
- We will visit both heaven AND Hell
- Just in time for Thanksgiving, we have two (2) Christmas songs! 🎄
- A song recently spotlighted in scorchy's awesome 1986/1996 thread
- A country, two US states, and one US city. U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
- A song with the title of a beloved album from one of our favorite artists.
- One of the two songs that appeared on both of the first two lists I received.
- Two songs that were in contention for the answer to this teaser when it was posted: "Which will be the highest ranking song that will be the only song for which the particular artist has votes (and who is the artist)? Or, put in opposite terms, which artist will rank the highest on the basis of only one song (and what is the song)?"
- One of the songs from this earlier teaser: "We have several songs that have received votes for different versions by different artists. One such song has two versions that have been listed. Both versions are by artists that at one point had an early lead for consensus "favorite song," but in each case, for a different song than this one."

I included way too many likes, but I thought this was a great round. Only auto skipped a couple.

Favs from 23

@simey Take Me with U - Prince - picked it as my fav Prince song which was no easy task, we'll see it later

@Yankee23Fan The Gambler - Kenny Rogers - This is on here because my wife loves Kenny Rogers and I was playing the playlist while she is in the kitchen preparing for Thanksgiving cooking (all the prep work so our daughters who are coming in tonight can help her cook tomorrow) - so thanks

@shuke Move on Up - Curtis Mayfield - As the kids say (I think) This slaps!

@Dr. Octopus Gravity's Gone - Drive-By Truckers - Have a song from them later soooo...

@Don Quixote All Too Well - Taylor Swift - I like Taylor Swift, there I said it. :bag:

@jwb Foreplay/LongTime - Boston - I have another song from this album coming up; it was between this one and that one

@DrIanMalcolm Truth Hurts - Lizzo - My daughters love this song and it's on my "You Go Girl" mix so...

@MAC_32 Hard To Handle - The Black Crowes - Would have had another BC song (Remedy) on my list but someone on that album was a dirty foreigner.

@Eephus Goodbye - Emmylou Harris - Cheating here, but wth. The only time I've ever seen her concert was "opening" up or singing with someone else. Lattest was at a Garth Brooks concert :bag: that some friends wanted us to go to with them at Nissan Stadium a couple of years ago (hate going to stadium concerts). Bad weather was in the area and we were worried it would get rained out. Emmylou was the the first person out to "introduce" Garth and sing a couple of songs. She sang one song (with Trisha Yearwood) and then the rain started, with some lightning - they canceled the concert, but I was oddly ok with it.

@AAABatteries Take it Easy - Eagles - Wish I were brave enough to take an Eagles song.

@Zegras11 Runnin' Down A Dream - Tom Petty - Obligatory "I love Tom Petty" post.

@Doug B Sentimental Lady - Bob Welch - My wife liked this one.

New2Me

@ditkaburgers So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings - Caroline Polachek - No idea who this is, but Like this one more than I'd like to admit.

@landrys hat Keith and Donna - Futurebirds - Like this one, What's it about again?

Added to "5 Out" Playlist (along with @KarmaPolice songs that didn't make his debut).

Nice! I must have been drunk when you posted this before. I'll add this to the first post. Thanks for doing it!

Favorite new-to-me songs from the #23 picks:

Gravity's Gone -- Drive-by Truckers (Doc Oc) -- Amazing lyrics and the music is Neil-ish in spots
Deep Red Bells -- Neko Case (Marco) -- Heartfelt and compelling
Winners and Losers -- Social Distortion (Worrierking) -- I also heard some Neil in the guitars here, which I guess isn't shocking since they toured together
Keith & Donna -- Futurebirds (Landryshat) -- Halfway through I thought this was just OK, but the second half sounded like Neil soloing over Crazy Horse. Hey, I swear I'm not ONLY looking for songs that sound like Neil.

This list has my lowest-ranked song so far. Those of you who remember some of my past posts (in other words, probably none of you) should be able to guess what it is.
