Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (7 Viewers)

It is the Duke's Mayo bowl (I think). I'm not taking those turtles. I wonder which QB NC State is going to use. When they played (and beat) UNC in their last game, they had to play their 4th string QB. He did well. The starter had a season ending injury against FSU, but I'm not sure what the injuries were for QB #2 and #3. @Just Win Baby might know.
Ok, I'll take the Terps. They'll get crushed, but I am a trooper.

Ok, here's the offer: If State wins, I'll listen to 12 Billy Joel songs of your choosing and will do so in real time here and give an honest-faith review of each. If Maryland wins, I still get to listen to your 12 Billy Joel songs but get to snark the hell out of every one of them.

I don't know what the spread is, but NCSU is ranked and Maryland hasn't been ranked in 15 years. Straight up, no spread.

Deal?
Sure. Yankee doodle is the one who loves Billy Joel, but I dig him just fine to present 12 favorites by him.

No spoilers but there is a song today that would have been top 3 for me, possibly #2, if the version was eligible.
If the song is listed already and your version isn't eligible I don't see how you would spoil anything.
It could be based on the rest of the Top 10.
I'm not following.
If I post the song, it could be a spoiler of someone in my Top 10. I didn't follow the 1 artist 1 song approach.

Marquee Moon - Television
(duplicate – fourth vote)

This was probably already going to win my vote for biggest surprise song of the entire thing - never heard it before this countdown and to see it gets 4 votes is fairly surprising to me. Maybe something else will overtake it but I doubt it as we get in to the top 10.
Same here. A month or so ago, an online trivia league that I'm part of had the band "Television" as an answer for a trivia question -- I got it wrong then, but wish I had that question back now.

I had never heard of that song either. The Fugazi song Waiting Room is new to me as well and it's also sitting top 10 in points. I've never heard of either of the bands before either. My listening habits are pretty narrow, it seems.

Just reviewing all the picks.

So far I recognize all of the songs on @AAABatteries list and nearly all on @Chaz McNulty 's (hadn't heard of 2).

On the other extreme @Sullie , @worrierking and @landrys hat have about 3 each that I knew, Then there's @Oliver Humanzee and @KarmaPolice with 1, maybe 2 each that I know. I had never even heard of most of their artists lol

Yeah, I said early on that my list would probably be the "chalkiest" - I like a lot of older music and ones that are fairly popular with the masses. I've been amazed how many of these artists I've never heard of.

It’s an “underground” classic album.

I’ve heard of Fugazi but never heard them. That song was new to me as well and is one of the big surprise likes for me based on what I thought the band was.

I purposely went this way. Have you listened to ones you don't know and like any?

If I wasn't narrowing down years, I for sure would have had Stevie, Aretha, Jimi, Elvis, and Bruce songs in there with other chalkier picks.

House Of Jealous Lovers - The Rapture
(new artist)

I watched Meet Me in the Bathroom this weekend. It's a recent documentary about the short-lived NYC music scene of the early 2000s. There was a segment about the recording of this song with The Rapture and James Murphy each giving their version of the story.

The era doesn't signify as much to me personally as it does for some of you younger folk, but It's a fine documentary that benefits greatly from the availability of cheap video cameras at the time.

. My favorite pick of this draft is @ditkaburgers AiC Man in the Box. Top 15 pick for me. My chaosburgers is also a young woman in her mid-20s and she hates it. Probably because her 60 yr old long haird dad makes horn hands and headbangs to it too often and it scares her cuz she thinks it's satanic (deny your maker). I think this is proof Eeph is a better dad than me, but then from all the Springsteen in the world he chose Brilliant Disguise so maybe not.

This pick surprised me the most of ditkaburgers 31. Her tastes in Rock (as in other genres) run heavily to the poppy and up tempo. I didn't expect her to pick a grungy sAIC ong recorded before she was born.

She is one of the few people her age who can say she went to a Nirvana concert. Mrs E was five months pregnant at the time so we sat up in the balcony but ditkaburgers gave her a few kicks during the show.

scorchy's Drive-By Truckers song is from the album with the supporting tour for which OH's band was an opening act. I didn't know him at the time. Every time the Drive-By Truckers come up, though, he talks about how much they drank. Great guys according to him, but always followed by "but damn could they drink." A fistfight involving the band broke out at one of the shows.

We saw the DBT's right at the end of this tour in Jan 2003. It would definitely rank in my top 31 shows.

The only thing I remember about the opening act is that the bass player wore a Slobberbone t-shirt.

I have yes and there are some I have liked. Probably a couple each round actually. I've been bad lately for not listening to any of the playlists.

here's a few I can recall
Angel Eyes Willis Alan Ramsey
Twilight Creeps Crooked Fingers

the Pearl Jam song from a couple rounds ago Off He goes

Minnie The Moocher
Humbug Mountain Song was pretty cool

Barefootin' Robert Parker
Lazy eye

There are others too. I do need to go through some of the recent rounds and give them a listen.

I should add that I like your Motion Sickness selection. Sounds great with the headphones separating left and right channels

Manster:

Off He Goes - Pearl Jam
(new song)

From Saturday's picks. So far really enjoying this playlist but wanted to point out this tune which I ♥️ . I own No code but sadly don't even recall this song. Still not my favorite Pearl Jam ballad, that would be Just Breathe (which sadly I didnt even think about for my list  ) but Off He Goes is a keeper. Thanks for this new one @Manster .

Breathe made my list. Limiting myselt to one track per artist made PJ a problem. Not sure if this makes sense but Breathe is not my favorite PJ. But somehow for this potential playlist, Breathe is my favorite PJ. Also love the vid/version with Willie and his son doing it, top down, cruising around Maui. But Eddie kills it and it's my most listened to PJ of the past 5 years. A more honest list and easier project would have been going 3xs on 10 artists +1.

Great picks. This is gonna be real good down the stretch. In PM I told Krista what I'm doing, coming late to the party post Thanksgiving feels like cheating. I got my list up to 26 last night with a couple dozen undecides, but I saw today's entries and cheated. 25 or 6 to 4 and Carry On Wayward Son should make my list but completely whiffed remembering them.

Also loved @Just Win Baby - Pirate Looks at 40. simey and I were defending Jimmy in a past draft and discussing how good his deeper cuts are, yet still Pirate is my 2nd favorite Jimmy, so not on my list. simey's pick is.

I was just about to bust your balls because I looked at the list in the other post and thought "ah, so nothing I drafted.... "

I can't even narrow it down to my usual knowns/unknowns today:

The Beautiful Ones (krista) - how many songs from Purple Rain haven't been picked so far?
Alex Chilton (worrierking) - Thanks to this I learned about Big Star. Since there was no internet at the time, it took a few years. A DJ on WHFS finally clued me in.
Blister in the Sun (Dr O) - Man that takes me back to the school bus when this girl Brandi stole her sister's Violent Femmes tape and played Add It Up and Blister in the Sun as we huddled in the back.
Electric Relaxation (KP) - Tribes raunchiest track?
Bootzilla (Uruk-hai) - Never heard this. All I can say is wow.
Touch the Sky (Hawks) - New to me as well. Not quite the wow factor of Bootsie, but still a standout.

The current 1-hit-wonder leaders : Top 5

Rev. Al Green - Let's Stay Together 49 points
Fugazi - Waiting Room 47
Don Henley - Boys Of Summer 41
Manchester Orchestra - Silence 40
Nina Simone - Sinnerman - 38

These are total points for a song AND that song is the ONLY song for that artist that's been selected.

I'm getting concerned that my choice for this will not appear on anyone's list  (It wasn't on mine as I only thought of it after submitting my 31)

Speaking of both of "one-hit wonders" and Marquee Moon, if one of the last five lists that came in (already revealed as landrys hat's) hadn't named a different Television song, Marquee Moon would have won the "one-hit wonder" ranking in a landslide.

I’ve heard of Fugazi but never heard them. That song was new to me as well and is one of the big surprise likes for me based on what I thought the band was.
Just gonna repeat what I said about Fugazi in another thread:

If you don't really know Fugazi, that's mainly because that's what Fugazi wanted. No major labels (turned down a $10 million dollar deal from Atlantic); no corporate sponsorship (declined an invitation to Lollapalooza); no merchandising (thus the ubiquitous 'This is NOT a Fugazi Shirt' worn by punks the world over); only played all-ages shows (how I got to see them at a DC high school). I first heard Fugazi's self-titled debut EP in the summer of '88 while playing Earl Weaver Baseball on the computer with a skater friend of mine. He dubbed it for me later that day with The Meatmen's live record We're the Meatmen and You Still Suck... on the flip side (oof). It was one of the main soundtracks for our summer. I finally got to see them in 1990 before heading off to college. A group of us told our parents we were going to Baltimore for an Orioles game but instead hit DC for the show. I'm glad my parents weren't up when I got home because it would have been tough to explain how my clothes were still soaked after a 2-hour drive back. It was...intense. And something I would give almost anything to experience for the first time again.

Also, I may have linked it before, but this Cleveland School of Rock cover of Waiting Room gives me hope for the future.
