Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (6 Viewers)

Uruk-Hai:

Minnie The Moocher-Cab Calloway
The oldest record on my list, I chose it for a few reasons.

1. It's fun! And funny! Might be a smidge out of date, PC-wise, though.

2. That horn line, one of the most iconic in pop history. It's basically the 1931 version of a power chord.

3. Cab pretty much invents the front-man role here. I mean, it's not hard to draw a line from him straight to later rocks stars like Jagger and Daltrey with his mugging and prancing. It's also a rap for most of the song.

4. I love it.

Tom Petty takes and early lead.
It will be very unfortunate if he wins...I feel the same way about him as the rest of the board feels about the Eagles :lmao:
Really? I’m not sure we can be friends. 😀
Honestly, it's his voice I just can't handle it. I love the music and the lyrics but man...his voice is nails on the chalkboard for me. Covers of his songs are usually amazing and I love them.
This is more or less how I feel about Tom Waits, though I tend not to love the music of his own versions of his songs.

Refugee has always been my #1 Petty. It's the perfect bridge between the adrenaline-fueled Stonesiness of his first two records and the "heartland rock" sound he would gravitate to. Fantastic performances by Benmont Tench on organ and Mike Campbell on lead guitar. It is also the first Petty song I remember hearing, at age 8. On 12/21/79, we had to drive from suburban PA to NYC in the snow to get to JFK Airport to fly to India to visit my grandparents -- my grandfather was a diplomat who was stationed there. I remember Refugee coming on the radio several times during the treacherous trip and was fascinated by it. Pretty much everything that makes Petty a top-tier artist is encapsulated in this track.

My top 5 (no order) that I didn't pick:

  • Baby Love - The Supremes
  • Cat's in the Cradle - Harry Chapin
  • Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival
  • Fly Me Courageous – Drivin N Cryin
  • Minnie The Moocher-Cab Calloway - I LOVE THIS PICK!

Only one song from this round made my top 25.

@Northern Voice
@Doug B
@HellToupee
@Bluesbomber

I think you're the only ones who intended to send lists but we haven't heard from lately. Hope you are still in - let us know!

Here's a little inspiration: both the consensus "favorite artist" and "favorite song" categories seem to be very close two-horse races now, and your votes could be a deciding factor!

The top two songs are within eight points of each other! One has more total votes but a few middling rankings, while the other is on fewer lists but always ranked quite high.
Sorry had a medical emergency and was hospitalized from Wednesday until Saturday night.

Hope all is good now GB.

Besides my choice, IMO Refugee is the best of this round. I limited myself to one song per artist, but cheated a little to count Tom Petty, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty as different artists. It didn't make my list, since it isn't my favorite Heartbreakers song, but it is a great song IMO.

MAC_32:

Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival

falguy:

Stand By Me - Ben E. King

Eephus:

The Humpty Dance - Digital Underground

Hov34:

Float On - Modest Mouse

These are my other favorites from this round, though there are several songs in this round that are new to me that I will have to listen to. :thumbup:

Just realized it's going to be a little tricky to write about our favorites in each round without revealing too much about our own lists... :whistle:
Yep. I thought about that after my comment earlier.

Did you end up with many identical versions of songs? I DO read your posts, but I've been loopier than usual the last several days and my memory isn't great.

Fly Me Courageous – Drivin N Cryin
Sometimes all it takes is one snippet of lyrics to suck me in. Here it's this stanza that first hooked me:

Mother America is brandishing
Her weapons
She keeps me safe and warm
By threats and misconceptions

But it's obviously not just that. I love the opening guitar riff that "repeats" throughout the song driving it along and Kevin Kinney's "angry southerner" vocals.

This one was easy for me, because Tom Petty is one my top 5 favorite artists of all time, and Stevie Nicks is one of my wife's top 5 favorite artists of all time.

Per Wikipedia, the song was originally recorded for Petty's album Hard Promises, but the producers felt the song came from a female point of view and it was left unreleased until it was agreed to be put on the Bella Donna album instead. So it was released as the first single from Nick's first solo album, which was her highest charting solo album.

Somwhat surprising to me, it was the highest charting single for both Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Tom Petty
Some of his albums are credited to just "Tom Petty" - but even on those his backing studio guys are mostly from the Heartbreakers.

Most or all members of the Heartbreakers contributed to those albums, but every song included musicians not in the Heartbreakers, and there was generally more of a rotation of musicians as band members for those songs.

Always liked this one, especially for the main riff and the cowbell. And then I thought the next single I heard from them, "Turn It Up or Turn It Off," was dreadful.

Yeah I surely wasn't trying to call you out for breaking them up as separate artists - just pointing out that he never really pushed those guys to the side, despite easily having the ability to go solo.

I'm not sure I understand the question...?

I think he's asking if any songs were choses more than once, which based on your posts is the case.

Of the songs I already know, my vote is for "Float On." Like Pip, I'm not a huge Modest Mouse fan, but that one really does it for me.

I'm going to listen to the playlist and choose a new-to-me favorite. :)
Still all grrrr that my Modest Mouse pick got booted thanks to Johnny Marr (which I knew but just forgot). It's usually Morrissey that ruins things.

For me:

Gold - Be My Baby (AAA) - would have been near the top of my list if took really old stuff instead of just kind-of old stuff.
Silver - Stand By Me (Falguy) - the song and the movie bring back a whole bunch of feels.
Bronze - Refugee (Pip) - i spent 6 years in Gainesville. The Tom Petty love is strong.

By popular demand, I've updated the first post to add a link to the post where each group of selections is revealed. Thanks for the idea, falguy!

I'm also going to update post #2 at some point to put everyone's selections in by poster. Just haven't gotten to that yet today.

Actually come to think of it I'm going to edit the first post and add the links to the playlists, too.

Straight to Hell is a fantastic song

Zegras11:

Reelin' In The Years - Steely Dan

Thanks for the shoutout @Pip's Invitation

Not a huge fan of Steely Dan as they have some songs I really detest, but we saw them at a local, outdoor venue about seven years and they just rocked Reelin' In The Years. They were so much better live.

My music catalog is so limited compared to almost all of you guys that do these all the time. Only knew 11 of the 31 posted. Really didn't listen to any new music from 1989-2005. Was too busy raising 3 kids, and running two businesses.

I thought the "Stand By Me Pick" here was really cool.

I chose "Long Tall Sally" because it rocks. Little Richard ****ing rocks. That's that.

I do not hate Tom Petty nor the Eagles, but I've never purposefully put a song from either of them on (other than the Wilburys). I'm growing to appreciate Tom Petty more due to the love for him here, though.
