It will be very unfortunate if he wins...I feel the same way about him as the rest of the board feels about the EaglesTom Petty takes and early lead.

Honestly, it's his voice I just can't handle it. I love the music and the lyrics but man...his voice is nails on the chalkboard for me. Covers of his songs are usually amazing and I love them.Really? The oldest record on my list, I chose it for a few reasons.
It's tight and some fantastic records were chosen, but @falguy wins this one for me. I can't believe I left it off of my list.

This is more or less how I feel about Tom Waits, though I tend not to love the music of his own versions of his songs.Honestly, it's his voice I just can't handle it. 1A through 1EE as opposed to 1 to 31.Looking at my list again, all of my choices should be ranked higher.
Refugee has always been my #1 Petty. It's the perfect bridge between the adrenaline-fueled Stonesiness of his first two records and the "heartland rock" sound he would gravitate to. Fantastic performances by Benmont Tench on organ and Mike Campbell on lead guitar. It is also the first Petty song I remember hearing, at age 8. On 12/21/79, we had to drive from suburban PA to NYC in the snow to get to JFK Airport to fly to India to visit my grandparents -- my grandfather was a diplomat who was stationed there. I remember Refugee coming on the radio several times during the treacherous trip and was fascinated by it. Pretty much everything that makes Petty a top-tier artist is encapsulated in this track.
Nice! Love Drivin n Cryin although I never expected to see this on this list.

But I’m willing to give it a try.

I think you're the only ones who intended to send lists but we haven't heard from lately. Hope you are still in - let us know!
Here's a little inspiration: both the consensus "favorite artist" and "favorite song" categories seem to be very close two-horse races now, and your votes could be a deciding factor!
The top two songs are within eight points of each other! One has more total votes but a few middling rankings, while the other is on fewer lists but always ranked quite high.

Tom Petty is in my top 5 artists of all time.
But I’m willing to give it a try.

Some of his albums are credited to just "Tom Petty" - but even on those his backing studio guys are mostly from the Heartbreakers.Tom Petty
Yep. I thought about that after my comment earlier.Just realized it's going to be a little tricky to write about our favorites in each round without revealing too much about our own lists...![]()
Sometimes all it takes is one snippet of lyrics to suck me in. Here it's this stanza that first hooked me:Fly Me Courageous – Drivin N Cryin
Just Win Baby:
Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around (1981), from Bella Donna – Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Right now it's Tom with 1.5 points and everyone else in America with 1....Considering the demographics of the board I'd say there's an outside shot of Petty "winning".
One of her songs with Fleetwood Mac would have made my list - but they have a few stupid non-Americans in that band.Stevie Nicks
Insider (another duet with Tom and Stevie) did make the album.was originally recorded for Petty's album Hard Promises but the producers felt the song came from a female point of view and it was left unreleased

Always liked this one, especially for the main riff and the cowbell. And then I thought the next single I heard from them, "Turn It Up or Turn It Off," was dreadful.Sometimes all it takes is one snippet of lyrics to suck me in. Here it's this stanza that first hooked me:Fly Me Courageous – Drivin N Cryin
Mother America is brandishing
Her weapons
She keeps me safe and warm

But it's obviously not just that. I love the opening guitar riff that "repeats" throughout the song driving it along and Kevin Kinney's "angry southerner" vocals.
Yeah I surely wasn't trying to call you out for breaking them up as separate artists - just pointing out that he never really pushed those guys to the side, despite easily having the ability to go solo. Some of his albums are credited to just "Tom Petty" - but even on those his backing studio guys are mostly from the Heartbreakers.Tom Petty
Most or all members of the Heartbreakers contributed to those albums, but every song included musicians not in the Heartbreakers, and there was generally more of a rotation of musicians as band members for those songs.
Including the guys that founded it.One of her songs with Fleetwood Mac would have made my list - but they have a few stupid non-Americans in that band.Stevie Nicks
Sounds like Bonnie Tyler, which makes sense because it's a Steinman thing.

Did you end up with many identical versions of songs? I DO read your posts, but I've been loopier than usual the last several days and my memory isn't great.

I think he's asking if any songs were choses more than once, which based on your posts is the case.Yep. I thought about that after my comment earlier.Just realized it's going to be a little tricky to write about our favorites in each round without revealing too much about our own lists...![]()

I'm not sure I understand the question...?
Running (down a dream) away with it.Right now it's Tom with 1.5 points and everyone else in America with 1....Considering the demographics of the board I'd say there's an outside shot of Petty "winning".
In the official tally, Tom has two points. Double the nearest competitor!
Yeah his song writing is so distinct. That could easily be a Meatloaf song as well.Sounds like Bonnie Tyler, which makes sense because it's a Steinman thing.
Still all grrrr that my Modest Mouse pick got booted thanks to Johnny Marr (which I knew but just forgot). It's usually Morrissey that ruins things.Of the songs I already know, my vote is for "Float On." Like Pip, I'm not a huge Modest Mouse fan, but that one really does it for me.
I'm going to listen to the playlist and choose a new-to-me favorite.![]()
I was just listening to that song and hearing Meat in some of those lyrics.Yeah his song writing is so distinct. That could easily be a Meatloaf song as well.Sounds like Bonnie Tyler, which makes sense because it's a Steinman thing.

Great song that could have made my list, but while it was always a "sad" song that made me well up, now I couldn't listen to it without wanting to jump off a bridge.
I always liked what I've hear from Conor but never really dove deeper - never heard this song before but it's fantastic. Love the orchestration.
It is a great song. Big fan.I always liked what I've hear from Conner but never really dove deeper - never heard this song before but it's fantastic. Love the orchestration.
I'm not sure what this says, but I love self-loathing songs, even though I don't generally hate myself.I always liked what I've hear from Conner but never really dove deeper - never heard this song before but it's fantastic. Love the orchestration.
