years ago in one of the audiophile talks here i posted about an old 60s console i nabbed at the goodwill in terrible shape complete with mouse poo. I really just wanted the EL84 tube amp, but was considering full restoration with new tech goodies and sliding a sub in where the turntable was. When i finally got around to cleaning it up and replacing the obviously shot wiring, for grins I wired a bluetooth dongle to the source and stayed with the ancient 4 way speakers. Plugged it in, put on Dark Side. A couple guys were with me and we all made eye contact, like wth? It sounded really beautiful, warmer than most want, but really rich and detailed. The it went snap crackle pop and into storage. Your pic inspired me to get it out and figure out what fried. i know the tubes are fine. Gorgeous set up, bro.

Wish I had a cool story like that, but my engineering skills are sorely lacking. Dark Side is perfect for tubes.

My uncle was an audiophile, and some years back when his hearing got shot, he gifted me his old McIntosh gear b/c I'm the only younger member of the family that gives a crap about sound quality. A while after he passed, the Magnolia Home Theater @ Best Buy near me was closing up and had some newer Mac gear for less than half of MSRP and I snapped it up. It sounded great, but I missed the sound of the tubes, so I sold all the old stuff and the Magnolia stuff on Audiogon (for 25 percent more than I paid for it), which paid for a new McIntosh integrated and part of a new pair of Sonus Faber speakers. It's paired with a Rega turntable and Arcam digital streamer. Together, it makes some beautiful sound. It's been two years later, and I still don't have any sort of upgrade or tinkering bug, which is a world record for me.

I went to a show last night headlined by Wild Pink, a band from Brooklyn who released one of my favorite albums of 2022. Their first encore was a cover of "Lawyers Guns and Money". I found this really surprising because there's no obvious influence but Zevon was always a songwriter's songwriter.

I almost went to their show in SLC last week but had to cancel.
Their albums from 2017 and 2018 were my #1 albums for those years.
I also like the albums from '21 and '22 but they were not my #1s.

Did Trace Mountains open for them? They were the opener here last week.
Their albums from '20 and '21 were both in my top 10's those years.

Not much of a Zevon fan but Lawyers Guns and Money is awesome. It oozes cool.

Trace Mountains opened here too. I've never really connected with their records but live was a different story. They battled sound problems for the first part of their set but once they fixed the mix they were locked in . Their drummer is a real character.

Both bands emphasized their rockin' side over their more atmospheric stuff.

I didn’t grow up in NJ either (Queens and Long Island). But I’ve lived in New Jersey for most of my life now. Bruce was more of an acquired tase, but now he’s a top 10 for me. Bon Jovi never got there, but I think he’s an outstanding man for being a huge star. He has songs I think are fun and like but not some one I’d put on. I did share he came out to sing an encore with The Wallflowers at the Stone Pony, and that’s not an experience I would trade.

Nice recommendation on Wild Pink. I really liked their 2017 and 2018 albums but forgot about them and haven’t heard this new album. It’s quite good.

It is odd they did a Zevon cover, I don’t hear anything Zevon in their sound either but I suppose it’s probably fun to cover a song that is totally different from your own personal sound/vibe.

As for my pick, not sure if there is any other song that gets me as hyped up as this one. It's a go to in my workout playlist.
But I love it even more as being how Letterman ended his late night career, with Foo Fighters performing to an incredible clip montage. I grew up watching Dave when he first started at NBC, and since he's been off the air I feel like there is a hole in my life that has gone unfilled.

Favorite new-to-me songs from #7:

Call to Arms -- Sturgill Simpson (MAC 32). Despite being done decades later and in an ostensibly different genre, this is Ball of Confusion. The message, the arrangement, the urgency and passion of the vocal, yeah, it's the same spine-tingling stuff. This is now the highest-ranked new-to-me song.
Baby Love -- Mother's Finest (Simey). Incredibly soulful and memorable.
The Warmth -- Incubus (Just Win Baby). I don't know much of their material. I do know they get lumped in with nu metal, but I also know a few people who hate typical nu metal but love them. Now I see why. This song is versatile and attention-grabbing.
New York Kiss -- Spoon (Rockaction). The best kind of hipster music -- makes you dance like you don't care, which is actually the opposite of hipsterism.

No other restrictions but like here l’ll keep myself to one song per artist/band.

Just some food for thought if were doing another one - I don’t think I’ll post the results live each day again so as not to “spoil” the FBG countdown - assuming we’re doing one.

I'm two for two on "Lawyers Guns & Money" covers this weekend. Tonight it was performed by Colts owner Jim Irsay and Mike Mills of R.E.M. Irsay doesn't sing as much as he hollers but he's really into the music and Mills played along with the same bemused grin on his face as when Stipe used to don the Batman makeup.

Irsay is displaying his memorabilia collection in select cities and put together an all-star band to share the stage. John Fogerty, Ann Wilson, Stephen Stills, Buddy Guy and Kenny Wayne Shepard performed in addition to Mills backed by a stage full of musicians including four backup singers, an eight piece string section and a seven piece band featuring Kenny Aronoff on drums. There were moments of rock 'n roll magic mixed in with a bunch of Jim Irsay's rambling stories. It was a fun evening in a bizarre sort of way and definitely worth the free admission.

I can only speak for my group of friends - but we will stick with the same rule as with Americans, that all members must be born in Britain. Since @krista4 was even more diligent than we were this time, I’m guessing that we’d follow that rule here as well.

Love this selection so hard. I had "Getaway" as one of my last 5 out, but this could have easily made my list.

EWF was really talented, the band full of ringers from jazz and R&B. Maurice White was a session drummer for many of the biggest hits to come out of Chicago in the 1960s (IIRC, that's him on the kit of my "Summertime" pick; he also played with Ramsey Lewis, among others). Philip Bailey is on the Falsetto Mt Rushmore. Larry Dunn was a fantastic keyboarder. They were so tight, both on record and in concert.

Huh...outlaw country's Ball of Confusion is certainly an apt description I hadn't considered with this track. Glad your first listen was as attention grabbing as mine.

I'm partial to SCIENCE, which is more funk metal, but musically Make Yourself was their peak. They just hit the mainstream at the wrong time and got lumped in with nu metal. They're very clearly not. If I had to pick one from that album this would be it, but there really aren't any gaps front-to-back on the album.

Choctaw Bingo is absolutely hysterical. It took me several years to realize that Ray Wylie Hubbard's version was a cover. It was my introduction to McMurtry. BTW, I typically don't like political songs, but We Can't Make It Here is an exception. Scorching!

Call to Arms -- Sturgill Simpson (MAC 32). Despite being done decades later and in an ostensibly different genre, this is Ball of Confusion. The message, the arrangement, the urgency and passion of the vocal, yeah, it's the same spine-tingling stuff. This is now the highest-ranked new-to-me song.

Huh...outlaw country's Ball of Confusion is certainly an apt description I hadn't considered with this track. Glad your first listen was as attention grabbing as mine.

The Warmth -- Incubus (Just Win Baby). I don't know much of their material. I do know they get lumped in with nu metal, but I also know a few people who hate typical nu metal but love them. Now I see why. This song is versatile and attention-grabbing.

I'm partial to SCIENCE, which is more funk metal, but musically Make Yourself was their peak. They just hit the mainstream at the wrong time and got lumped in with nu metal. They're very clearly not. If I had to pick one from that album this would be it, but there really aren't any gaps front-to-back on the album.

Morning view is my favorite Incubus album. There's two or three off it that could've made my 31.

Sweet Oblivion, and Uncle Anesthesia were my albums in high school. Depending on the day, I couldve swapped out 4 or 5 songs from each album in place of Shadow of the season....It is a great opener though, and much better song than the first single they released from the album.....which is actually probly the weakest song on the album, imo.

I love both albums, but SO is really the Trees at their best. The biggest difference is gaining Barrett Martin on drums.....no offense to Mark Pickerel, but Martin brought the boom. SO is about as close to a perfect rock album as you can get......I feel the same way about Pettys Wildflowers.

Since we did US artists last time - we are doing top 31 songs by artists/bands from the British Isles - England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland (whether they want it or not) and while I don’t expect anything to come from them all the minor Isles would be eligible as well.
No other restrictions but like here l’ll keep myself to one song per artist/band.

Just some food for thought if were doing another one - I don’t think I’ll post the results live each day again so as not to “spoil” the FBG countdown - assuming we’re doing one.

• Police - Stewart Copeland was born in Virginia
• Yes - Trevor Rabin is South African
• Cure - drummer Boris Williams was born in France
• Supertramp - drummer Bob Seibenberg was born in California
• Bee Gees - drummer Joe Lala was born in Florida
• Billy Idol - lead guitarist Steve Stevens was born in New York

This is why I wanted to clarify the requirement, since all of these would be generally considered UK artists.

The rule for solo artists is just the artist himself matters - sure his stuff with Derek and the Dominoes wouldn’t be but anything that is just “Eric Clapton” would be no matter what session players/singers are on it.

Yes from what I saw other the The Police (ineligible due to Stewart Copeland) it’s only a small part of the catalogues for those bands that would be ineligible.

It seems kind of silly that Billy Idol is eligible when his lead guitarist is American, but the Cure wouldn't be eligible (at least for some stuff) because the drummer (1 of 5 band members) was born in France, as an example. Regardless, just want to understand the rule. If this is what it is, good to go.

Never saw them with Homme. The 1996 show was just before Dust came out and Homme was on the tour after it came out.
