Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (1 Viewer)

As Ahnold said in 1984, I'll be back.
Who are your British/Irish equivalents of Billy Joel and Jackson Browne, so we can needle you about them in that countdown?

It seems the U.S. is singularly suited to breeding musicians I can't stand. There is no equivalent to Billy Joel in human history (thank God). As I've said before, Browne is ok he just bor........sorry, I fell asleep talking about him.

One thing I'm not crazy about is the way some Brits/Irish sing. I don't know how to describe exactly what I mean, but there's a certain accent I can not STAND. That guy from Fontaines DC has it and it's like nails on a blackboard to me (sorry @rockaction ). I find it most often in the punks and punk-inspired artists. It's not that they don't "sound American", just a kind of twang that drives me nuts.

Maybe it's the useless glottal stops. Those drive me nuts. And the incorrect use of "sat". "I was sat on a bench." Hell, no. Learn your own language, people.

Also, open up your throat when you sing. That upper throat stuff sounds like you need to see a doctor.

I meant to post this a couple weeks ago....

Went on road/fishin trip in January and threw in some CD's I hadn't listened to for some time. Included in the pile of discs was Tom Waits, Closing Time. I immediately regretted not including a song from this album on my list. Side one of this album is so good.......great road tunes as well.

I believe a couple of Waits songs were selected, but I can't recall who did or what was selected.

I'm gonna do a Tom Waits deep dive. I recall in my younger days his stuff being hit or miss for me.

Krista : Joe Cocker :: me : Tom Waits.

However, I don’t hate Closing Time, as he sings normal by his standards and the song arrangements make sense for his voice.

Yea.....
It's like deja Vu for me.......I been firing up some other Tom Waits stuff today and it became clear pretty quick why I never really got into a lot of his material.

No, did it from scratch tonight. I did look up a few things on setlist.com and other sites. But most of it was from memory. Pre-pandemic, live shows were a huge part of my life and my brain makes room for their memories at the expense of a lot of other things.

This seems like the right place to mention that Marshall Crenshaw's self-titled debut album is back on Spotify after a long absence. It's one of the best Power Pop albums of the 80s.

There's a 40th anniversary version of the album on physical media with seven bonus tracks.

Ooooo, fantastic! I haven't listened to this in way too long.

Attention Billy Joel lovers: Columbia has released a recording of a 1975 concert at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. There's lots of stage banter and kind of an odd setlist with two instrumentals back-to-back and no "Piano Man" or "Captain Jack". It was the fourth show of his SF run so he mixed things up a bit. It does include the first recording of "New York State of Mind" which wouldn't appear on an album until the following year.

The recording quality is excellent and Billy is in fine voice.

Oh, I'm spending any amount and will drive anywhere for this. Can't wait!
