FBGMD - Constipation and vomiting, what's the cure? (1 Viewer)

Alright my fellow MDs, I've been vomiting all night and think it's because I'm constipated (haven't BMd today and have a pit in my stomach feeling with lots of lower insetinal gaseous sounds and constant nausea).  I'm brewing a pot of coffee to see if that helps, but any thoughts for relief?  Not really sure if I'll be able to keep the coffee down, but figured I'd try.  Thought some of you might have some good home remedies.

That doesn't sound normal at all. I'd see a MD.
I'd call my doctor if it wasn't in the middle of the night.  I also don't feel like I'm on deaths door between hurls, so I figure I'm not in any immediate/emergency situation.  It could be just a stomach bug I guess too, but I was thinking it over for awhile and think it's the constipation thing, but I can't remember the last time I was constipated so maybe I'm not that.  Ugh.

Are you on painkillers? I've seen ads for drugs for people who can't poo because they're been prescribed them for pain. Would explain vomiting too, which I've heard can also happen.

ETA: You have Teladoc or something similar with your healthcare provider? This would be a good case to use it if so.

Any pain on the lower right side?

friend felt like that...we just told him to suck it up and whatever...kept getting worse and ended up have g an appendectomy

i doubt just not dumping today would cause nausea

No pain meds and no teladoc (haven't even heard of that).  I've got General stomach issues for which I take lamporazole (or however you spell it) daily. But that reminded me about that 24 hour nurse line thing - I'm gonna find that and give them a call.

Are you farting? If not you could have a small bowel obstruction or an ileus or something. Esp if you've been popping pain killers.

If it is just cheese run of the mill constipation: coffee/lots of water, dried apricots or prunes, last resort enema.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome it sounds like and the Holidays always shine a spotlight on it for those who don't know or aren't sure why they don't poop right all the time.

All that high fat in all those sugars and sweets plus red meat and pork plus dairy...how much of that is in you right now?

I've never heard of vomiting being caused by constipation, especially when it's only been one day.

Do you have pain in your lower side/groin area? Could be a kidney stone.

Fiber in big doses could make the problem worse so don't load up on things just because they have fiber.

I would peel it back to Oatmeal for breakfast, try to eat some bananas and for goodness sake don't drink any sofa or beer until you can get things right. Stick to white meat turkey and chicken for a few days. Let that intestinal tract have a chance to relax.

No - I always think it's something bad like that when I have stomach pain, but no, no pain right now,

Not doing that either, actually, and I didn't think about that until you mentioned it.  I do have lots of acidic burping, which happens if I forget my lansoprazole (for heartburn).

If you have a fecal impaction that can cause vomiting but if you're not in pain it's probably not a fecal impaction or at least not a major one.

I had a stomach issue earlier in the year and the doctor prescribed omeprazole. I swear that stuff made me feel awful. Lasted about 4 days on it before I couldn't take it anymore. i know you want to avoid alcohol when taking it so if you've partied a lot around the holidays that could be the issue. You don't want to be on that stuff long term either. If you're having heartburn or gastritis issues you want to adjust your diet so the issue resolves rather than relying on those meds forever.  Google long-term PPI use.

Funny you say that - I was on omeprazole for awhile, after my my company switch healthcare providers and it moved my lansoprazole to a tier 3 drug (f that).  I wasn't a huge fan, as I'd still get heartburn and acid reflux, so once we switched providers again, I was able to get lansoprazole as a tier 1 drug.  I've taken it everyday for about 3-4 years since I had a endoscopy.  Heartburn, acid reflux, and ulcers "run in my family" (I don't know if those kinds of things can run in families, hence the quotes).  I honestly feel great when I take it and if I stop for even a few days, it's like all hell breaks lose and my esophagus catches on fire.  My doctor original prescribed it for like 14 days to quell the symptoms when I first got them 4 years ago, but as soon as I stopped, the symptoms came back (even with adjusting my diet) and he said just stay on them, so I have.

Rebound effect is common with those drugs. Stop taking them and then your stomach goes into acid producing overdrive. Eventually it goes back to normal. Stuff just came out this year about PPI's and increased heart attack risk, increased kidney failure risk. Those things on top of the stuff they already knew. Four years on those things is a long time. Nausea and constipation are the most common side effects with Prevacid so it wouldn't be surprising if what you're feeling is related to the drug. It doesn't mix well with booze either if you've been drinking over the holidays. Honestly, I'd see the doc, tell him what's going on and then talk to him about taking these drugs for so long.

Taking that for 4 years, if you ever just stop taking it one day your stomach is going to go haywire. You have to ween off those things over a period of time. Even if you took an over the counter dose of zantac for 3-4 weeks, once you stop the rebound effect kicks in and your stomach goes nuts with the acid. I can't even imagine what it would feel like to just stop taking a prescription dose of prevacid cold turkey after taking it for 4 years.

I'm surprised some are suggesting coffee. Isn't coffee a diuretic? If he has been vomiting a lot, he is probably dehydrated so wouldn't the coffee make it worse?

Also, coffee is acidic, so wouldn't that also make his nauseau worse?

Yes, coffee is a mild diuretic, and there are acids in coffee. But coffe stimulates gastrin, which increases intestinal motility (why you have to take a dump after your morning coffee, if you drink it) so, for regular old constipation, it works.

his case sounds like more going on than regular old constipation, though. And if he's not farting, and has recently switched up his meds, a call to a real MD is in order.

Very true.  There is now also a surgical option for acid reflux.  You might look into it.

Thanks all - this whole, short thread is a small example of why this place is so great.

Finally fell asleep and woke up with no nausea.  Just tried drinking a little water, so we'll see how that goes, but the coffee stayed down somehow.  Will give the doc a call later.

Thanks Willie.  When he first prescribed me too, I told myself I wanted to ensure I didn't get stuck on them, as I was taking no medication at all.  But it was so easy to stick with them, since I never have heartburn or anything else when taking it, so I feel kind of stuck on it.  I'm definitely going to bring it up to my doc and see if I can ween myself off, though.

If you truly are constipated, try a glycerin suppository. Mirilax would be another option. Both can be had at your local drug store.

Definitely work to get off of the drugs. My wife was having bad acid reflux, her father has it too, and drinking seltzer worked for her. Try drinking a lot of that as you wean off.
