Big time smokescreen.Gruden has talked up every player at the top of the draft except one: Wisconsin left tackle Joe Thomas. I'm assuming that he's commented on him but Gruden is known to thickly layer the hyperbole. He hasn't done that with Thomas...which leaves me to believe that he is the player the Bucs are really targeting. All the recent talk of them moving up to #2 is just that imo, talk. I have no doubt that Detroit wants to move down but I wonder if TB is discussing a trade up to secure their guy (who I believe is Thomas, not Calvin Johnson) or if they are doing so in hopes that the talk will convince another team to trade up to that second spot to grab Brady Quinn or Calvin Johnson...and dropping Joe Thomas one spot closer to them.ditka85 said:
Jon Beason over Patrick Willis was surprising but I felt his breakdown was fair of both players. I'm skeptical of Willis being a top 10 pick for one of the reasons Mayock gave in his overview...Willis isn't great at getting off of blockers at the point of attack. In the NFL those blockers will only be bigger and faster and if he's not protected by some nice DT play I wonder if he'll end up making too many tackles 5-7 yards off the line of scrimmage?Mayock was also high on MAI S Brandon Meriweather. Interesting name to keep in mind once LaRon Landry is off the board and a team in need of a quality safety is on the clock. I could see a team like Green Bay target him if Ted Thompson trades down from the #16 spot.
Good call. When breaking down running backs one of the most important abilities is vision. Some RB's have all the measurables but can't get it done on the field while the opposite can also be true. If a player has great vision and a natural ability to make the right cut...he can be gold.Adrian Peterson looks like he has the measurables and vision...Marshawn Lynch doesn't have the crazy combine numbers but watching that film breakdown I find it laughable that some mocks have him falling out of the 1st round. Lynch has that one cut mentality and could be a great pro if he ends up in the right situation.
I respect Mayock, but he misses just like the rest of us. I called him out on McNeill last year and I'll call him out on this one this year. To review, his very low grade of McNeill was not based on possible back problems. He tore McNiell's play to shreds. He was a back bender, stiff kneed, couldn't get his rump down, was a sucker for an inside move and labored to get down the field and run block. He had Marcus McNeill out of his top five tackles and claimed there was no way McNeill was a prospect for LT. RT was possible with some serious improvement in basic fundamentals. I claimed through draft season, if the back held up then McNeill could be better then D'Brick, and I was ridiculed for the claim right here at FBG by a moderator. He's crazy if he thinks Beason is better than Willis. Bat crazy. Willis and Beason have both played about a 1000 plays over the past two years. Willis has been dominant. Willis is the focus of offensive game plans. He has multiple blockers coming after him on almost every play. He still shed countelss more blocks, blew up more lineman, and made more tackles and plays than Beason. Beason had the great luxury of being moved from the middle to either side and playing behind Kareem Brown and Calais Campbell. If you aren't familiar with Campbell, you will be. He is a monster who will be a top 10 pick next year or possible #1 overall in two years. I think Landry was the best defensive player in football last year. He was followed by Willis and Campbell. Willis sheer athleticism really sets him appart. I am very confident the Beason thing is false. I think Posluzney is equal too or better than Beason, and I like Beason. Willis is crazy good. Bigger, faster, meaner, stronger, better ball skills, equal instincts, far more explosive hitter, and Beason is a very good hitter.
I love Marshawn but Cal fans can tell Mayock probably missed this a little too. Lynch is not your prototypical one cut and go downhill runner. Sure there's clips of him doing that, but he is very shifty, very patient, very creative, and sometimes he's three or four cuts and hand fighting, and ducking and dodging for every yard. He doesn't often lower his shoulders and just go. He runs with outstanding vision until he is tackled. I thought the "wake up with that" comment showed him doing a bit more than one cut and go.
I swear that with all the talk about "Zone blocking for One Cut runners" people are trying to make every RB into a "one cut back" these days. Next thing you know someone will be touting Barry Sanders as a one cut back.
