Focusing on the positive -- GOOD things about the coronavirus situation (1 Viewer)

We also have used the last few days to potty-train the 2 year old. :hifive:

 
@Otis or anybody I guess looking for a new puppy to give your family positivity during these times.

You can see the pics of my pup on a previous page, and I just have to say this guy is amazing....so smart, so even tempered, great with kids, no shedding, never barks, basically potty trained in 3 days and crate trained in 2 days.

Where I'm going with this is that his twin sister's (Amber) potential adopters just had a family issue where they could no longer adopt her.   Looks similar to my Maxwell, but just more white (not as much color on body).    The breeder described her as (copying from message sent):  She's got the personality of a princess. Holds her head high, she knows she is cute and has all the looks! She knows she gets so much attention. She's a heart stealer! Very confident and extremely smart!  I really just want to keep her for our family, but my husband says that we have enough pups already 😞

And I can't say enough good things about this breeder, she's amazing in many facets. And this pup is available now..just turned 8 wks old.    Maxwell Corona has brought so much joy to our family already in 4 days and giving us all something to be excited about and above all just keeping us busy and not focusing on all the negative going on.

I was going to start a separate thread "Coronavirus - What is it good for?" and focus on things that, once we are out of crisis mode/lockdowns/stoppages/etc, will hopefully improve for us personally, people in general, and our country/government.  Seems to dovetail with what GB @Otis has going here so I'll pose the question in this thread.  Some things that come to mind (some of which are alluded to in here already):

  • Better hygiene.  Hopefully people will improve their habits of washing hands, sanitizing, covering their mouths, etc.
  • Social distancing.  I know we are a social bunch, but respecting the personal space of others has always been a pet peeve of mine.
  • Educated on pandemics.  The general public had not seen anything quite like this in their lifetime... it was always just a "possible threat".  Now that people know what it means, should it happen again, it will be taken more seriously.
  • Readiness.  Like above, this should provide a blueprint for governments and health officials/workers to be better prepared to handle something like this.
  • Educated on biology, health, geography, politics, world affairs, etc.  Global events like this "force" us all to know more about the world.  Smarter people make that world better IMO.
  • Focus on family.  People (jokingly?) complain about having all their kids at home.  That time is precious and should be cherished.  People will look back at these family times together as fun, bonding moments.  I only hope family time will continue with greater frequency for everyone once things are back to normal.  I wish I could have all my kids under my roof right now.
  • Focus on financial health.  Hopefully this will entice people to pay better attention to their savings, retirement, etc. 
  • Less reliance on foreign goods/services.  Especially those countries that don't play fair.  Medications, supplies, fuel, etc.  I struggle with this based on my belief in capitalism... I know it's cheaper to get things elsewhere, but keeping it in house is beneficial in other ways (employment, economy, etc).

Adding:

  • WFH tolerance, etiquette, acceptance, procedures.  I think the ability for people to WFH is essential, beneficial and productive.  I'm in IT, so I realize my job is easier to accommodate than most, but the benefits FAR outweigh the drawbacks for both companies and employees. YMMV in some industries, but the infrastructure reduction alone (traffic, office space, etc) would be positively affected.

It's absolutely fascinating. There are so many things going on that are simply amazing to consider and watch unfold. The look into the US work culture; the political dynamic; the clear indicators of who/what particular entity is just a steaming pile of dung vs. an awesome humanitarian; personal hygiene; medical/scientific responses; etc. is just fascinating. 

I took my 3 boys to the park down the street and we'd played tag. With on other kids around, they wanted me to play.

I'm really curious to see how this plays out over time.  So many old school industries and management types hate the idea of WFH.  But probably it's the future, for all the reasons you state, and now for reasons like pandemic control and crowd density management.  Maybe this will trigger a enormous shift.

 
Hopefully after shutting down thousands of businesses in the name of public health governors and state legislatures wont have any problems telling anti vaxxers that home school is their only choice.

I contemplated posting something like this.  I know that the anti-vax community has strong feelings about their "personal" rights.  I happen to strongly disagree with their argument regarding this and I think (hope) this situation should further highlight the need for vaccinations for the good of humanity.  i.e. society is sometimes more critical/important than the personal.

This is true and it is also why most people can only handle 3 or 4 days of Las Vegas.

My 4 year old's preschool class organized a class Zoom meeting.  You guys that have meetings and stuff I'm sure are used to Zoom or other virtual meetings but this is my first experience.

My daughter is having an absolute ball right now. Their 2 teachers and her classmates are all logged in and talking to each other. 

I'm not sure if this is going on elsewhere, but if not, if you have younger kids, I'd highly recommend reaching out to your teacher if possible and seeing if you can set up a date and time for the kids to see each other. 

 
I've made a point to exercise a little more with the free time, play with my kids, give everyone I deal with in my law practice a lot more grace, and have just tried to talk to people again, granted with zoom and text.

I'm enjoying the down time. Killing my cigar stash, but they deliver so.....

I thought that a few days ago. If there's a business that's going to profit from all this.... 

 
When I was a kid we were taught to only use two sheets of toilet paper at a time(we were dirt poor).  I am leaning that this was a good art to learn, given the current TP shortages.

The extra time to exercise has been the biggest positive for me. My goal is to come out of this healthier then I went in.

 
I'm spending more on soap, but less on shampoo, razors, shaving cream, etc. And the water bill is down because I'm only showering every other day and I don't do laundry unless I run out of underwear.

On the other hand.......my hair is getting scraggly and the barbershop is not considered to be an essential service. (Grrr.)

Can anyone recommend a cheap hair trimmer?

Wife, myself, her sister & brother in law, and their parents all video chatted to play Drawful 2. It's basically Pictionary where everyone can't draw. It's still pretty fun.

 
Despite the fact that the gym is closed, Ive lost 10 pounds due to not going out for lunch everyday and eating dinner at home.

Hmm. I was just thinking my water bill will probably triple. Showers are down but laundry and dishwashing are way up with me and two kids home all the time. I’m running the the dishes 2 or 3 times a day. Plus the endless hand washing. 
 

So I’ll say drinking early in the day and chatting with the neighbors from my porch.

Not too surprising... a lot of the Gen X crowd is currently raising a family and/or taking care of elderly family members at this stage in their life.  They need a sense of responsibility to get through this.

 
we're in NYC on Houston and A- nexus of EVil (e village) and LES (lower east side)- both are neighborhoods with tons of bars and clubs where people from all over come to party. we typically get a ton of sirens going through the intersection all day all night- police, fire, ambulances (hospitals are up 1st ave, and Houston is a main FDR exit for downtown... plus close to the Willsburgh bridge). fwiw- I'm hearing and now seeing far less sirens. I think more people are getting themselves to the hospitals for this than getting picked up. also think with nobody out and about, a lot less accidents and ambulance pickups.

we also typically get lots of honking at the intersection. the lights red!!!!!! STOP!!!!! the lights green!!!! GOOOO!!!! HONK HONK HONK

even more- 7 days a week, we get drunk kids out at all hours- especially when the bars/clubs close at 2 or 4am. regularly woken up by screaming idiots... and then regularly having to hop over the pools of vomit in our doorway.

the last two weeks... silence. cleanliness. it's incredible. 

 
Just had the best run I have had in a while. Probably helps that I have been running nearly daily just to get out of the house. Not in the shape I used to be in for sure, even when I ran a half marathon a couple of summers ago, but it is good to get back out there.
