Frye likely traded (2 Viewers)

From PFT:

NO FRYE TRADE YET

WTAM has altered its report regarding Browns quarterback Charlie Frye. Earlier in the day, WTAM reported that Frye has been traded to an unnamed team. Now, WTAM reports that the Browns are merely trying to trade Frye.

Per the new report, Frye will be cut if he's not traded.

The speed with which Frye has gone from starter to reject highlights, in our view, the pressure that coach Romeo Crennel and G.M. Phil Savage are facing. Frye didn't even get a full half to prove himself.

Our guess is that the Browns initially floated the "Charlie is already traded" story in the hopes of smoking an interested suitor out of the weeds. Apparently, it didn't work.

Frye, a third-round draft pick in 2005, generated plenty of hype as a rookie. But his performance never matched the perceived potential.

He is signed through 2008, at salaries of $435,000 in 2007 and $465,000 in 2008. Since he is not a vested veteran, he can be released without the Browns potentially owing him the rest of his 2007 base pay.

They should go ahead and bite the bullet and start Quinn. It's obvious this team isn't going anywhere this year and might as well give all the time he can to develop. Sorry I meant regress.
See Couch, Tim.

How do you go from starting a QB week 1 against your toughest rival, then cutting him two days later?

GB Brownies - 8 years back and still an expansion team! :bs:

NYG? Is Frye greater than the big overweight dude backing up Eli?
:goodposting: Atlanta is another candidate. How about Philly? McNabb's still recovering, Kolb's not ready, and Feeley got injured, right?
Philly cancelled the trade for Frye after realizing he could not field punts. Back to the drawing board.

This site is reporting that Frye has indeed been traded to Seattle . . .

Apparently, 20 minutes of action was all the Browns needed to see to make a change at quarterback.

Cleveland has traded former starting quarterback Charlie Frye to the Seattle Seahawks, FOXSports.com has learned. Terms of the deal, which went down Tuesday morning, are not yet known.

With Frye out of the picture, it should only be a matter of time before first-round pick Brady Quinn gets the nod as the starter.

The Seahawks have been in the market for a backup quarterback, which will free them up to use Seneca Wallace in other positions around the field.

The Browns will bring back Ken Dorsey, who was with the team in training camp, to serve as their third quarterback.

In just over a quarter of play on Sunday against the Steelers, Frye was 4-of-10 for 34 yards and 1 INT. Frye was also sacked five times before giving way to Derek Anderson early in the second quarter.

Anderson would throw for 184 yards and the team's only touchdown of the day, but also had an interception in the Browns' 34-7 loss.

The bigger problem with the braintrust of many NFL clubs is that they treat their situation like they're running the Mahattan Project and are more interested in creating deception and subterfuge than they are in actually coaching.
I mean seriously....Does Romeo (and other coaches of poor teams) really think that the elite teams are going to change their gameplans if Brady Quinn is the QB instead of Frye or Anderson, for example? Hey Romeo, the good teams dictate the game to the poor, not the other way around.
Romeo needs to worry more about executing his own gameplan than what other teams are doing to stop his, and I think that's what he's now doing. Atleast Quinn gives them a chance to not only HAVE a gameplan, but to execute it as well. This is the first sign to me that Cleveland is now ready to do more than just be reactionary and allow other teams dictate to them. Bad teams can turn it around in a hurry when they have an actual leader.

Based on my views yesterday about the silliness of benching Frye, trading him makes imminent sense. He's a eunuch if he stays in Cleveland.
You just wanted to show everybody you knew the proper spelling of eunuch.

Not official, but:

Traded!
Hard to imagine Frye really starting over Wallace if something happens to Hasselbeck. It does make sense since they need a backup in case Wallace gets hurt playing WR.
Holmgren has wanted to get Wallace on the field as a WR or punt returner for the last couple of years but he has been hesitant to do so because he has been the primary backup QB, and Wallace himself has been reluctant to do it because he knows his value to the Seahawks as a backup QB is better than that of a WR or PR/KR. He was given a contract extension this year and feels more secure about his roster spot on the team and gave the go ahead for Holmgren to use him more in other roles. David Greene didn't show he could handle the backup QB duties in pre-season so that didn't pan out. DJ Hackett goes down and now they could really use Wallace at returning kicks (Burleson's job) and depth at WR. It makes perfect sense really... One of the coaches on the radio said the other day if Wallace was returning kicks he would be a top 3 return guy and would be better than Randle El at WR - he has that kind of athletic ability - I guess we'll see...

As a Dallas fan I welcome this move.
Dallas would have been better off with the Frye-Anderson carousel continuing.
Good thinking, but I disagree. I think that Quinn and a season full of rookie mistakes boosts that 1st rounder that Dallas now has up nice and high.
They already had 2 QBs making rookie mistakes. Now they have a more talented QB who is going to make rookie mistakes without all the associated drama, coin flipping, and rock/paper/Saddaming.

Charlie Frye Sent Packing: Browns Quarterback Traded!

Submitted by Eugmc on September 11, 2007 - 11:40am. Local News News Sports

According to WTAM, Charlie Frye has thrown his last pass for his hometown Cleveland Browns. The quarterback, who starred at Akron and was a 3rd round draft pick has been traded according to the radio station. The Atlanta Falcons are rumored to be the recipient of the QB. It makes sense because many believe that Frye is more of a West Coast offense QB and they brought in a coach (Bobby Petrino) to run that offense with Michael Vick before his legal troubles suspended the quarterback.

The Browns will use the roster space to clear way for Ken Dorsey who is looked at as a mentor for young Brady Quinn. It looks like Quinn will be starting sometime very soon, although Dorsey may get the nod this week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Frye Traded
Sometimes I wonder at the braintrust in the NFL. Why would anyone trade for a player when it's known that said player is about to be cut?
"Hi Charlie! It's the Atlanta Falcons. We'd like you to come hold a clipboard and watch Joey Harrington lead our team to a lottery pick. Whaddya say?"*click*
"Let me think it over, will ya, Charlie? I've got a guy on the other line about some white walls."

As A Seahawk Fan, I love this trade.

It's a freaking insurance poilcey. Seneca is still the backup, but it allows him to be used in the offense 5-10 plays a game.

Better than the rumor about Brunell a couple weeks ago.

Good job, Ruskell!

How is Cleveland the winner here? Just makes the organization look as foolish as ever in their judgment of talent. They've just traded their starting QB, an early 3rd round pick from 2005 for virtually nothing. It took the Browns 2+ seasons, nearly 20 starts and 3 training camps to realize that Charlie Frye wasn't going to cut it as their starter...alot of wasted time. Now the Browns have journeymen Derek Anderson, Ken Dorsey and rookie Brady Quinn. They will likely go through the same process with Quinn but it's doubtful that Crennel and maybe even Savage will be around to see the end of that experiment. It will be interesting to see how Cleveland fans and ownership feel about Brady Quinn and Phil Savage when the Cowboys get their top 5 overall pick in the 2008 draft.

Frye might be traded per 850am in Cleveland. Went into breaking news on the Rizzo show and they went to a reporter in Berea. Browns denying right now but said we'll know within a half hour. Makes sense since he's hit rock bottom here and Dorsey was back in town yesterday. More to follow.
Who would trade for Frye? If he can't make it in Cleveland, where else would he go? :ptts:
And the list of guys who have "made it" in Cleveland is a long one.
