General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

All three expansions are half off this week.Playing dawngard now
I bought Dragonborn and I already had Hearthfire. I'm trying to decide if I should grab Dawnguard or not. The reviews here have been mixed. What do you think of it?
Run through Dragonborn first, then if you're itching for more play, get Dawnguard. The nice thing about Dawnguard is you can play it two ways (pro vampire or contra), so it has replay value. The story is decent too. However, like being a werewolf, the new vampire shape-shifting & skill tree is a bit of a let down. Unless you run through Dawnguard before level 30, I'm betting turning into an Arch Vampire makes you less powerful. Still, the story and quests were fun to run through.

I just restarted with a new character so I have a long way to go in the original story yet. I'm just thinking if it's worth playing maybe I should pick it up on sale. Then again it could be a while before I need any more content and it could be even cheaper by then. Decisions, decisions.

If you just started a new character and Dawnguard is half off, I'd nab it now. I've been thinking of starting a new character, but I've pretty much exhausted all the possible builds. It might be fun to max out the Shield tree. Never did that. Maybe focus on Blocking, One-Handed, Restoration, and Smithing - a Paladin type character.

Yeah my first character I just played willy nilly. No thought to what skills or any of that really. Didin't do as much searching for better armor all that. Still I got him pretty powerful but there were some glaring holes I didn't like so I stopped playing him a little more than halfway through the main quest. I switched to a dark elf build where I am paying more attention to how and what I level. I have to say I can see the difference even at the lower levels. I was still getting killed by wolves regularly when I was the same level with my first character now I roll through them. Been neglecting my destruction skill a bit though so now I am working that more.

I love Skyrim but one of the things that would be really nice is the ability to redistribute skill tree points. They let you do that in Borderlands 2 and it makes character play significantly more entertaining.

That would be cool.

You are going to hate me.Dark Souls is better.
They get about the same metascore from user reviews. I haven't played it but as I recall from others they really punish you when you die. I'm not in this to be the baddest player ever. I'm here to kill some dragons and have some fun. This one always sounded like less than fun to me.

If less fun you mean more serious then yes Dark Souls is far more difficult - some people even call it the hardest game ever. The combat is different with parrying, dodging, stamina (poise) and attack style all playing a more significant roles then Skyrim.

Imagine a mix of the two. Skyrim's obnoxiously deep story with Dark Souls' fighting mechanics.

Again I'm not even sure I want to play the hardest game ever. Why would I punish myself like that? I mean it gets good reviews and all but sounds entirely too much like work for my taste.

So been playing this for a couple weeks on the PC ("demo" copy) and finally went out and bought it for the PS3. What is a good/fun/entertaining character build? The one I had going on the PC was as an archer w/ enchanting.

You are going to hate me.

Dark Souls is better.
Is it an open world RPG like Skyrim? I'm ready to move on, but not sure what to.
Yes.
Looks good. One last question: it isn't a button masher, is it? Someone bought me Arkam City for Xmas and I hated it.
No it is not a button masher in which your character just completely overpowers the enemy. You really need to plan out attacks. Leveling up and skill distribution play a huge role, and honestly when you kill a really tough enemy it is an achievement.

I love hard games. I'm playing Skyrim with all sorts of handicaps to make it harder. But I don't want to play a game that takes the manual dexterity of a 21 year old Adderall addict fighter pilot to do it.

Yeah, I'm old too.

 You do know you're supposed to time each and every hit, right? If you just mash the buttons you're doing it very wrong.

I liked Arkham Asylum 10X better so I'm not in disagreement with you on liking the game.

I'd say it requires a lot of patience and concentration over finger dexterity.

Why punish yourself? Because it is really really fun and the lore is great.

People might think you are kidding - but seriously think before you swing at someone. And do not ever try to fight a group of enemies, even the lowest level enemies can kill you like that.

Well then, it's settled. I was going to wait for Witcher III, but Dark Souls it is.

I have to admit I was thinking it was one of those gang sign button mashers as well. It will be a while before I am in the market for any new content but I'll keep this one in mind when I do. Probably my next purchase will be Witcher 2 though. The enhanced edition looks too awesome to pass up.

So new character means new missions. I wanted to try to do a better job of knocking out all Daederic quests and have done two new ones. Well new to me. I went ahead and did Ill Met By Moonlight and skinned the werewolf. Hopefully the Hercine ring will come in handy down the road. BTW didn't I kill that guy in the last game? I also did The Break of Dawn. This gave me Dawnbreaker which seems like a good thing for killing vampires.

I also must mention we have been in mourning in my part of Skyrim. Lydia died. I have no idea how or when. I was in the Oculary focusing the lens and she was right there. Knocked me off the stairs at one point. Everything that was an enemy was dead. I got the lens focused, chatted with the Synod guy and then killed him. Couldn't have him reporting back could we? Then I notice Lydia didn't jump in front of my spell or anything. I looked through a good portion of that end of the dungeon. No body, nothing. So I figured she wondered off. It happens. Last time through she disappeared for like 3 game days at one point. But then I got a letter saying she left me 300 gold inheritance. She was the greatest.

I got a new follower because you have to move forward you know? So her name is Rayya. She is a new follower that comes with the HearthFire Expansion apparently. She dual wields and has no moral qualms. Fitting in nicely so far.

Master Sweet Roll ThiefStone: ThiefMajors: Stealth, Speechcraft, Pickpocket, Archery, IllusionBackstory: You're a dark elf recently escaped from imprisonment in Morrowind for stealing all of the sweet rolls in Cyrodil. Being a native of Morrowind you are aware of the terrible truth that there are no Sweet Rolls in all of Morrowind, Vivec himself could not will it to be. So you set off to Skyrim, home of the Nords, the originators of the sweet roll to steal all of the sweet rolls, and sleep with all the white women of the north, only to be caught crossing the boarder with a friends skooma pipe and a couple moon sugar, and now you await your execution for possessing recreational drugs.

So got a little time in last night. Got to see Rayya go all double sword kill move on a dragon. It was pretty cool. I had him about dead and he tried to do that land right on top of me move. So I am backpedaling and hitting him with some electrical spells which gives me a little space and then Rayya hops up on his neck and goes to town. Quite the little dragon killing duo we are becoming. And it seems like this time through I am facing a lot more dragons. I haven't even gone up to see the Graybeards yet and I can't hardly leave the house without a dragon landing on my head.

Since I'm a PS3 guy :bag: amd know nothing about the DLC's I was wondering if people who have actually had them for a while can weigh in a little on them instead of me searching around for months at a time. How many hours will they add to the gameplay? What do they add? New towns? I know about a house I can build but also heard about another that allows you to have a new character, weapons and shouts...is that true? I'd check for myself but I'll be at work for the next 8 hours and dont have access.

The one that lets you build a house is the Hearthfire DLC. It's actually pretty cool IMO and it lets you build up your smithing without building daggers ad nausem. And actually there are two homes you can build. I am building out the one in Falkreath and am getting ready to buy the land for the one in Morthal. There are also new followers available once you download the DLC.

I haven't played it yet but Dragonborn gives you new shouts, weapons and areas to explore. There are new characters involved but you still play your existing character as far as I know. Probably a new follower or two included.

Don't own Dawnguard yet.

Should add that's all on XBox can't say for sure on PS3.

Man I had forgotten how long Labyrinthian can be. Add in the two boss fights and it's a heck of a dungeon crawl. Did it over the last couple of evenings. The best part is killing that putz Arcano back at the college though. So I am now officially the Arch Mage. :confetti: The apartment you get is pretty cool.

Where's the third one? I got Falkreath, getting ready to buy the one in Morthal.

So got in some more play time. Went ahead and adopted the little girl in White Run. I figure when I leave my current follower there they can hang out together. Plus I figure the little girl has it made. I'm never home. The place is always well stocked. Plenty of stuff to sell for cash. She does her own thing on her own schedule. I did screw up though. I bought all the little girls dresses in Solitude but I gave them to her all at once. I should have saved them to give her one each time I came home. Apparently there is a good parent buff when you give her gifts. Oh well. I also gave her a steel dagger, she seems proficient enough with it. She did get herself a pet rabbit can't wait to see how that goes.

I have Diplomatic Immunity going but I am doing some side quests so I have that in a holding pattern. I want to go find Grimsever so I can get Mjoll on the payroll. She is an essential character so she can't be killed. I find that an appealing trait in a follower. But she is also a goody goody. Which is fine but I probably need to do the Dark Brotherhood quests before I bring her on. If she is a follower and you get a bounty she may quit on you. It's supposed to only happen in Riften but I read some stuff online that makes me think it's a bit glitchy.

Wow, you sure know how to make a game sound interesting! Seriously, I think when you get to the point that buying dresses and raising bunnies is what you are doing, it may be time to conisder moving on to something else!

Well it is a role playing game after all. The adoptions are a new thing just making sure I get the full experience. Looks like I can add one more to Breezehome think I'll adopt a boy.

For the record I have killed a lot of stuff in the interim. Including several Draugr Deathlords, those things are hard core, and more than a few dragons. I have wondered the length and breadth of Skyrim tracking down Words of Power. And I have had the pleasure of ending more than a few Thalmor's days. Did I mention I wasn't home much?

So I spent this weekend first working some old side missions I had on the board and then decided to dive into the Dark Brotherhood story. I am glad I decided to play through it. A decent story and the missions are kind of cool. I am getting near the end. I decided to let the Jester live. I kind of agree Astrid dissed the Night Mother and he didn't try to kill me, well other than luring me as deep as possible into the other sanctuary. But those guys went down pretty easy really. So I am at the part where I am going to play a chef. I just know that somehow Astrid is going to screw me. And I don't mean the good way. She is either going to rat me out once I do the chef job or she is going to try to kill me. I can just see it in her beady little eyes. She's jealous. Anyway before I do the big job I have some smaller contracts to finish and a side mission to do so I am going to knock those out and then go see how exactly she tries to play me.

After I finish this line I'll move back to the main line and do Diplomatic Immunity. After that maybe the Companions line.

I will say I am starting to question keeping a follower. I am getting pretty powerful now and a lot of times they get in the way. But then again it is nice to have someone else draw fire at times and the extra carrying comes in handy as well. I'm doing the Dark Brotherhood followerless and it has been nice actually not to have to figure out where they are stuck now or redoign because they died. I'm conflicted.

Well thanks for reading the blog, see you soon.

The Dark Brotherhood is the coolest questline, just like in Oblivion. I appreciate that they included an alternate questline in case you want to rat the Brotherhood out, but it's so much less satisfying.

My experience is followers are helpful depending on your character. If you're sneaky, they're great early on, a pain in the butt between levels 10-40, but then come in handy again when you have to fight Ancient Dragons and super powerful NPCs. If you're a wizard who doesn't specialize in Conjuration, they're essential all the time. If you're a warrior type, they're also always handy.

I just hit level 26 so I guess I am right in the middle of the frustration zone. Plus my follower I specifically left at Breezehome while I did the DB missions has wandered off. She was supposed to be watching the kid! I guess I'll go get Grimsever and get Mjoll on the payroll. Probably go ahead and marry her as well since she is then essential and can't be killed.

Have they fixed the thing where followers don't level yet?

So I got some time in last night. Usually weeknights are too hectic but last night there just wasn't much that needed to be done. So I did the quest to get my fortune read. And then went on the dungeon crawl. The Ancient Assassin Armor is definitely worth it. I have been working on my sneak of course and it is getting pretty high. But I put this armor on and I can practically sneak right into an enemies face. I was maybe 3 feet from a Hargraven, with her facing me, and it was like I was invisible. And that particular crawl was full of goodies and a word of power. All in all a pretty good night. Then I go to Breezehome and the first thing the kid wants is money. Pretty realistic.

Been a quiet week at Che NCC. So I got in some more play. Knocked out two more contracts and have now received the last one to kill the pirate chick. I also combined a contract with picking up Grimsever so now when I finish the DB line I will be ready to go win the hand of Mjoll. So if I get the chance I will finish off the pirate tonight and depending on how long that takes I'll wrap up the DB line as well. I am glad I decided to play it. As I mentioned I started with a new character because my old one, while powerful, had some holes those included sneak, lock picking and a late recognition of the bows strength. Well I have definitely got all that covered as well as having my Destruction coming along nicely. Pretty happy with how it is going. Doing the crawl last night for Grimsever was just so much easier with the enhanced bow and sneak it was almost like playing a different dungeon.
