General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

Game is in hand. Moments away from firing her up. Any last bit of advice before I go in?
1. Make sure you level up some attack (one-handed, two-handed, magic or archery) and spend perks on it in proportion with your leveling. That is, don't go nuts and pick up 10 levels from smithing without at least throwing some perks to something combat. Else you may get your ### handed to you when you go back out fighting.2. Early on, play the main quest line through at least the spot where you help some guards fight an attacker at a tower outside a city. Doing so will give you access to two benefits that you'll probably kick yourself for not having gotten earlier if you run around doing other stuff then come back to them. Detail in spoiler.
You'll get access to your Dragon Shouts ability which is very good, and also can buy a house so you have a place you can store equipment and items for crafting and alchemy.
3. When you level up you have to choose where your bonus goes (Magicka, Health or Stamina), but you can wait to spend your perk later. You can't undo a perk spend, so it's worthwhile checking on how good they are before committing. I'm already second guessing a couple that I spent.

Just sharing my sad story. Went to the Rangers game last night. They won 4-3. It was a great game. Whole time Im thinking of skyrim. I take the train home and get in around 12:45. I have it in mind to skyrim it up for an hour or so. I figure I can work on the main quest a bit or go and try to defeat Morokei with the things I learned from youtube.

What happens. I walk into my bedroom and my 2 year old is up. Apparently he napped from 5-10:30 and my wife handed him to me and said have fun. So he didnt go back to sleep til 3:30 so there was no skyrim for me.

First thing I do when I get home today is put this bad boy in. Im hoping my kids fall asleep on the way home. Is that selfish of me?

Beat the main quest last night at level 40 (archery/sneak based) and it was incredibly easy on the normal setting. I went back to my save and upped the level and it was not much harder. So far this has been the only major disappointment In this game

The fact that you have 4 other NPCs helping take down ulduin (sp) really makes this far to easy.I was able to sit back with my ebony legendary bow +15 fire damage and pick at him until he was done. I barely even suffered any damage.

Looks like you have a passive aggressive wife who is sick of you going to Rangers games and playing Skyrim. Better take a day or two off.

All of you are saying how easy it is to bring down dragons, but the 2nd dragon I've faced is owning me. I'm a level 12 and on top of the mountain where there are those 2 really high half-bridge kind of things. The dragon just flies around me and if I step to far left or right, I fall off the freaking half-bridge thing. My fireballs and poison arrows barely dent this damn thing. My sparks and flames won't reach it. I swear I've been killed 10 times and I've never gotten the dragons health below 80%. I was on my way to get the horn thing following learning the shout when I ran into this thing. Frustrating.
FWIW I would have a really tough time taking one down solo. But if you are near a town, everyone pitches in. That helps a lot. And yes, don't be afraid of sprinting away. I also try to find a spot with some cover until it lands again.
Made my way off those stupid arches and down to flat land. Took down the dragon with a combination of healing spell in one hand with fire in the other. Wore the mages cloke to regenerate magik faster. What followed was an epic battle of me blasting the dragon with fire while healing myself at the same time from his frost, then running and hiding behind a pillar until my magik came back. Result - dead dragon!

Im a level 16 mage and I find it much easier to take down dragons with arrows FWIW. You get to stay further away and dont have to worry about healing

Who plays this game for the main quest line?:shrug:All joking aside though if thats the biggest disappointment Im going to be very happy!

Has anyone done the bard college quests? If so, are they worth doing? The first quest was a huge PITA for my guy (granted he was level 1 when I started it so that might have something to do with it).
Wait. How the hell did you make it to Solitude while remaining Level 1? Even if you beelined it there without doing a quest, you'd still end up fighting enough to gain a level, right? That's one hell of a walk.
I only had an hour to play and really wanted to check out the bard college quest so I cheated and took a cab :( .

I realized I rarely used the shouts, so lets move on to other stuff. I absolutely love the game but it was a bit of a let down.

Who were the other 3 NPCs for you? I made it to him around level 40 as well, but I just had the other Dragon helping me. I couldn't put a dent in him the few times I tried playing him, literally not a dent, so I just left it until I had a BA enchanted bow.Agree that he came up kind of quick, wasn't expecting an End Game boss fight there. I was only like 65 hours in.

When I went to sovengarde i had to talk to 3 other npcs that then helped along with the conan looking dude that you have to beat to get into the building. They ran out with me and we all did our clear skies shout which cleared the mist and then they stood there and attacked him while I hit him with arrows and my dragonrend shout. Really nothing to it. Oh and I did not have a dragon help me.

I think I am almost done with the main quest. Talking to the dragon on top of the mountain now. I played a pure mage. I think the trick to game is to level in skills that you use. I am at level 40 and never had a problem with a dragon. What kills me is the forsaken archers in the later game. So I switched from light armor to heavy armor. Alteration iron skin spell does not provide the protection you need. The problem is that I lost 40 points to a skill that I will not use. Things I learned as a mage. High level spells have an area affect. I like firing at things around a corner with a fireball. I killed some nasty archers that way without them having a clear shot at me that way. The problem with a mage is friendly fire. So you generally have to get in the mix with a low level spell so as not kill your helper or allies. I killed Lydia (my helper) so many times in a fort battles. Also I conjured the same element (fire, frost, electric) as what I used as an offensive weapon because of friendly fire.

Was able to sneak attack someone last night with a war hammer. Pretty cool.

One quick question. I'm going from town to town and talking to lots of people, which means I've got a bunch of side quests hanging out there. It doesn't matter how long I take to check back with these folks, right? Could be a month and they'd act the same as if they saw me yesterday?

One thing I learned about shouts.

The "calm wild animals" shout works great wandering around, but if you attack the wild animal after you calm it, it will still maul you unmercifully.

Last night, after playing my level 34 char for a couple hours, I began experiencing lag again in Solitude.

The patch needs a patch.

Picked up Skyrim during the midnight release, try to play whenever I can but between work and planning a wedding its been rough. At level 13 and have read every single post in this thread, I must say i havn't enjoyed playing any video game this much in a long long time. Thanks everyone who has been posting here has been a great read, will try to stop lurking and actually contribute from time to time =þ That being said, came across something cool after arriving at High Hrothgar:

Figured I'd check and see if any of the graybeards had anything useful on them, the one who's name starts with a B (Babit? Babar? something like that) had an amulet that reduces the time between using shouts by 20%. Did the good old save and steal, only took one reload to not get caught.
After that, decided to:

Head towards Riften to take on the Thieves Guild quests, along the way stumbled upon this cave/ruin called Avungruve or something to that effect. Far as loot goes nothing spectacular, but did learn a new shout that allows you to summon animals to assist you in battle, have yet to test it out but sounds pretty sweet.
Working til 8:15 tonight, counting the seconds til I can hop back on and start some good old fashioned thievin.

Break down your first spoiler for me. First time playing RPGs and dont know the little things like this.

I know what you mean. I got tired of chopping wood after just a few minutes, and I've never gotten around to getting the amulet that I need to get married. No time for this stuff, when there are Falmer in dungeons who need to be sniped.

I've spent wayyyy more hours than my level would dictate on this game because I literally steal everything of value I can whenever I walk into a building, especially in new towns. I've got hundreds of rings and necklaces sitting in a chest in my house and on my person.

I can burn through Tonia's 1000 gold in about four rings, so I'll have to advance further in the Thieve's Guild quest in hopes of getting another fence with more money, as well as the fast travel directly to the Thieve's Guild instead of going through the Ratway every time
On the bright side, my pickpocket is up to 94 and I will have more money than I know what to do with pretty much for the rest of the game. Being a sneaky bastage sure has its advantages

Snuck up behind each graybeard until the pickpocket option appeared, then checked all their inventories. Only one with anything useful for me was the one who's name started with B, he had that amulet. Game said I only had a 43% chance of succesfully pickpocketing him, so I saved the game just before attempting. Tried the first time and he caught me and started throwin haymakers :boxing: , so just reloaded my previous save and tried again, ended up nabbing it undetected the second time around. And if you were asking about the amulet, see post #1801. Hope that helps!

Do you have lots of bounties out on you because of all the stealing?

Was trying to complete the Companions quest

with the Ax and all the Companions ghosts and found out something the hard way: no autosaves in that cave. Died at what appeared to be the end. ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE BEGINNING DUMMY~!@~!

Do you have lots of bounties out on you because of all the stealing?Surprisingly, no. At first I was reloading if I was unsuccessful, but my % chance on almost everything is now at 90% so I rarely get caught and when I do I reload. I get an awful lot of snide comments about picking pockets, etc., but I figure that's due to my TG armor as much or more than due to my light fingers. I'm guessing I just haven't PO'd the right people yet and that the bounties and/or hired thugs will be coming my way eventually :hophead: When I get tired of the always successful route I'll just take my lumps when I get caught so I can see what it's like to play w/bounties on me. That's another awesome aspect of this game - it's just so large that I can play it with different styles at different points in the game. Sooooo cool.

I'm in the same boat. I steal EVERYTHING. anything that has higher than an a 10gold:1carryweight ratio gets lifted.

Poor Angeline who runs Angeline's Aeromatics. I treat that place like my own personal looting zoo.

No bounties for theft here, I guess I've just been lucky.

On a side note - how long before everything resets and they have more good loot? There are a lot of places/people that I "revisit" but all they have on them are the worthless pieces of junk I left them with

Yah. You can leave them hanging and then come back to them. People don't care. There's at least one quest where the giver will send thugs after you if you hold onto the package too long.

I know that fences and other shopowners get their starting balance back after 48 hours, I would assume the same applies to shopkeepers with inventory but I am not positive.

Is this game still readily available in stores? I want to go buy it, but am afraid because of the time of year I won't find it anywhere.

I can't figure out what kind of character I want to be. I started out as a Dark Elf. I mostly use spells when fighting, but I also whip out my shield and mace setup. However, archery is super fun! I also like stealing from people? WHAT SHOULD I DO!?!!??!?!
All of the above?I'd say the only thing you really should decide is what kind of combat damage you want to do primarily. Because you don't want to burn lots of perks in 1-handed, 2-handed, destruction, and archery. I'd concentrate on one of them and then just drop 1 or 2 perks into 1 or 2 of the others. Mostly I use spells to kill guys but I do try to soften them up with an arrow beforehand and am not above whipping out a 1-handed sword if I run into a mage who out-guns me. But I've only dropped 2 perk points into archery and none in 1-handed.
Do you think I should drop the shield? Basically when I battle I like to fire a few arrows and when they charge me I shoot them with fire. If they get too close I switch to my mace and shield. Also, what type of armor should I use? If I mostly want to use magic, am I better off with robes and not heavy armor?
I carried a shield for a while then eventually sold it because I never used it. If nothing else, you can be healing in that hand. Up to you, though.Armor just personal weight/sneakiness preference. I use light so I can sneak some but do use the mage's robe for the magicka regen. I'm L16 or so, chose Altmer to start, have only thrown 6 level-ups into health and the rest into magicka, have some plus magicka items, and I still always run out of magicka. But again, totally up to you.
I started out pretty much the same, ditched my shield and finally ditched my lunar mace after I realized I'd never swung it a single time. Have only used archery and magic.I agree with picking no more than 2 combat types to focus on. If you do go with archery, I find the zoom-in ability to be very worthwhile. Oh, and if you are tired of arrows being shot at somewhere above your cursor rather than right at it, if you're on the PC you can fix that by adjusting two parameters in one of the .ini files. If anyone wants instructions let me know and I can dig up again what they are.If you're going with magic, getting the "spells cost half price" perks for Destruction is big. I also recommend getting the one where dual-casting will stagger an opponent most of the time. Since picking it up, far fewer opponents make it within melee range of me. Also if going with magic, I would go with the best destruction robes. The Adept robes give you 100% magicka regen and 17% reduction on Destruction spell costs. I also wear a helm that gives me another 17% reduction on Destruction. And there is also a perk in the Restoration tree that increases magicka regen. If you go with a couple of items that have that (I have a necklace that does it too), you can really refill your magicka meter faster without needing many potions. Just have to stop casting for a moment, so a quick switch to a bow for 2 shots is normally enough regen I can go back to spells.

Dang, as someone that played a ton of Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion, I have officially lost my resolve to not buy this. :bag:

I figure I will buy a retail pack then just activate it on Steam.

Speaking of spells, in past games the shock magic was by far the best option, as most opponents who had some sort of resistance had it against fire or frost, so you tended to do full damage with shock. Are you guys finding that to be the case in Skyrim as well? I originally put a perk into extra fire spell damage, but have since put some towards shock and started to use lightning bolt and chain lightning as my main attacks.

I got that buy a linksys router get a free xbox game deal yesterday. So I got this one. May not start it till after the new year.

Should I be sleeping more? I almost never do.(In the game....I am already without sleep in real life now that I'm playing this game)
Sleeping gives you a 10% bonus to your skills leveling up for the next 8 hours. So it's beneficial to do so, yes. That said, I've only slept once because I did something in a quest line where sleep no longer helps me.

Good question. i've only been using fire, but am curious as to what is best?
I figure having all the spells (since it's only money to get them) is good... mainly comes down to where you put the perks.I'm thinking I might keep growing shock but it'll be good to have a little extra damage in fire for when I do fight an electric based foe. Though I'm not planning to take the fire perk all the way to the top where they flee at low HP. I don't want them to flee, it's a pain running them down to finish them off when they do that.Just guessing in an ice continent that frost will be the one most creatures are the most immune to.

Been going pretty much magic all the way and there seems to be a pretty good variety in what creatures are immune to. I do a fair amount of switching between types. I use frost the most though because using the other two wipes out my frost atronach tank pretty fast.

Matts

Why are you talking about with the ssd card. You are going to save the game to that instead. How do you do that?

I'm only 2 damage spells in (flames/sparks and firesomething, not fireball) and use mostly fire. The advantage is that they keep taking damage after you stop and guys on fire take extra damage (I think). But I have been using some sparks on spellcasters to drain their magicka. Not sure how the advantages shift as your spells get better.
The next level of spells will be the area attack ones. Fireball, Chain Lightning, and... forget the name of the Frost one. Frost Storm or something like that. It can be hard to use them if you have a companion with you and they go get into melee though.Good point by GAImgren about using a familiar who is immune to one of the types.

Dear Dragon Who Attacked Me Last Night,

I just wanted to pen you a quick note and express my thanks for your bones, scales, and soul. I enjoyed our little encounter, brief though it was.

Sincerely yours,

Greg

P.S. In the interest of longer, more challenging fights, may I suggest you choose a better time and place to attack me than the courtyard of the college of magic when I'm standing with the Archmage and three Master level magic trainers?

MattsWhy are you talking about with the ssd card. You are going to save the game to that instead. How do you do that?
People have videos on the web but basically you're backing up your PS3 data, taking out the hard drive that came with your PS3, buying a Solid State hard Drive, formatting it, and then putting that into your PS3 instead. Despite what it sounds, it's apparently a very straight-forward thing to do and something that Sony actually encourages (it doesn't even void your warranty). The people who have tried this have almost universally reported that it makes Skyrim run with zero lag and fast loads and having read a little about it (although I'm not a tech guy) there seem to be some good reasons why this would be. The only obstacle is whether or not you want to lay out the cash to buy one of these but they're not that expensive so if my game keeps getting worse I will be.
Solid state drives are awesome. It's basically a disk drive that is as fast as RAM is. I got them to hold the OS for both my laptop and my desktop. Laptop is fully booted and ready to use in about 20-25 seconds, desktop takes about 40. Desktop has a second solid state drive for holding games that do a lot of loading, like Oblivion and Skyrim. Also have MS Office installed there as apparently Outlook runs much better off of it. Other than that everything else goes onto the normal disk drive which is much larger, but slower.I can imagine it would make a big difference with a PS3. It would be similar to the difference between playing an Xbox game off the disc versus installing it to a normal drive. When I was playing Dead Island with friends and we'd transition between zones, I would be loaded up and running around a good 10 seconds before them, just because mine was installed to the regular drive (not even an SSD) while their game had to load from the game disc.
