General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (2 Viewers)

The lockpicking perks are a total waste of time. I was able to pick master locks at level 30 with a little patience with my orc. I'm almost to level 90 now and still haven't used one perk.

So without using spoilers -- that dwarven piece you need to unlock that giant underground area that everyone was saying is so great (I don't remember the name of it, but I did watch a youtube vid on where to get the missing piece from that merchant in the middle of nowhere in the snow) -- is all of that part of the main quest? I don't want to screw up the order of the story if I'm going to be forced down there, but I don't want to miss it if not.
not sure? i stumbled across that guy in the snow well ahead of the main quest and had completed his quest well ahead of the main quest. It didn't cause any problems with the main quest

Ugh wasted an hour last night in Solitude on some seriously stupid quest to find someones master in a side room of the palace. Ended up in some crazy persons head without my weapons running around trying to accomplish what the voice was telling me without having any idea what I was doing. God I hate those bard drama queens. Restored and went out and laid waste to a dungeon mercilessly.
XThat is the coolest side quest I've done so far. Very creative and tons of fun.

You get the treasure hunter perk?
My buddy had the same rebuttal. Seems cool, but not worth the 3 perks (?) it takes to get to it to open it. I'm a jewel hoarder so I'm not sure if more of them would do me much good.

I think it's for magical items. If you have a toon that isn't smithing/enchanting (like the one I'm rolling now), then I think it'd be really useful. I'll let y'all know how it works out.

Well had to back out of Diplomatic Immunity. My sneak isn't good enough to get by the first two guards even invisible apparently. I got close to killing them but couldn't seal the deal. Well I decided to take on the Lights Out mission. Almost finished with it we'll see if I am up to the grotto which I guess is stuffed full of bad guys. I think I'll have to make the dog wait outside though. He isn't very sneaky but he does get after the bad guys. I will say having the dog makes me feel a little Josey Walesish when I look at our little clan strolling the world.

As to the Diplomatic line I have now stocked up with so many health potions I probably clank when I walk. But those two are going down if I have to use every potion I have.

Why are you trying to sneak in?
If you get the invitation from Delphine, get the party clothes from her, etc, you should just be able to hand them the invitation and walk right in.

Really digging the dual dagger wielding thief character

Actually get some cool cut scenes that I've been missing because of previous guys being an archer and a mage

The cut scenes are so cool. While doing Lights Out there was one of those "you are going to be sorry you came here" NPCs coming at me. I advanced on him and go to disembowling. Cut to me running the scimitar completely through him. Interesting to see yourself pick an Orc up on a sword while gutting him.

I think as long as you hide behind doors, etc., most of the guards will walk away and make it fairly easy to sneak by. There should only be 2 or 3 guys you actually have to fight by the end.

I am going to try to avoid who I can. Just so far not so good. These guys spot me through the door before I even get to them sometimes and that's sneaking. Really ticking me off. I am normally an FPS guy and it takes fighting all my instincts not to just go in "guns blazing" as it were. What I wouldn't give for the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch at this point:
"First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."

Haven't done more than fire a few arrows early on. I think I did swing a mace to break a jar for a quest at one point. So question about the cut scenes. Does combat basically stop while the cut scene is happening? That is, if you're fighting 3 opponents, do they keep hitting you while you're stuck in a cut scene, or does the combat pause while it is going on?

That's a good question. I think so far it has only cut on single enemies for me. My favorite still being the dragon skull impalement. It seems like it's done with the game suspended while it plays out.

I've read that if you put on the Thalmor robes that are in there not so far, the guards are much less likely to be hostile. If you're playing as an Altmer, supposedly you can even go up to their face and yell at them.
Searched the kitchen top to bottom couldn't find them. What really hacks me off is I already had a complete set of robes from killing these guys on the road. Told me who to worship, I don't play that.

I think it's past the kitchen, once you enter the halls. One of the first off rooms IIRC (right side, maybe?)
I'll check when I go back in. I still want to gut those two though.

just to state the obvious...you did give the bartender some gear and weapons prior to going to the party right? If you do that he will stash them in the larder off the kitchen and you can use all of it to kill the thalmor. If you're trying to do it without weapons then I could see it being a bit more difficult.

Can you even get to the back without doing that? I mean I guess you could not give him anything but that would be kind of stupid to put it politely.

Anyone else save their level-ups for when in battle to basically get a free magika/health/stamina reload?

I lost some staffs and arrows because it said it was optional to pick up the weapons. Since I am a mage, I chose not to take them. You never get that stuff back. So whoever is reading this, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR WEAPONS OUT OF THAT CHEST. I found the guards to be difficult but not overly so. I conjured a flame atronoch and let her do her thing while I blasted one at a time. Then for the guys outside in the square, I would run back indoors until I killed one at a time

I basically gave him my whole inventory.

Ok so I knocked off the backstabbing Jaree-Ra and have finished Lights Out. Gave me a lot of bow practice and I am getting better there. Kind of ignored it to start with. It looks like I'm not far from leveling. I am really going to have to decide what to do with these next few. I was a little all over the place in the beginning and need to get back on track.

Sorry guess I am blogging a bit but maybe it will come in handy for someone else. Definitely been beneficial to me getting you guys input.

Just started Dark Brotherhood. Now I'm in half DB clothing, half Thieves clothing. Pretty happy with the effects - and the way it looks so I may play it out this way. BTW, Astrid was much hotter in the intro with her ninja wrap on - wish she'd stayed like that. So far not too pleased with the DB quests - but this is my first one so we'll see if it gets more fun.

I wound up having to kill everyone, I could sneak past the two guards but the blind mage at the top of the stairs spotted me every time so everyone had to die.

Dumbest question ever. Ive lost track of what the main quest was. How do I tell which one is tied to the main quest?
Quests that involve named dragons (like Paarthurnax or Alduin), the Greybeards, or an elder scroll are probably main quest items. Or you could just look up the quests on the wiki, but that has some spoilers.

You can't. Try reading the descriptions of the quests in your log, hopefully some key words will jump out at you. It will almost certainly be dragon-related.

For those going the smithing/enchanting for profit route, I managed to get a "damage stamina" enchantment pretty early (I think I was level 7 or so) and started enchanting it onto iron daggers. The profit isn't huge, but you make some from it. I've been selling them for ~90, and my cost is something like 27/iron + 44/petty soul gem, so you can make a slight profit from that, but its not going to fill your wallet much quicker than raiding bandit camps.

Re: Archery, I seem to be having a tough time leveling it. I hit 30 and got the zoom perk, but it doesn't seem to be moving from there. I've also noticed that it seems pretty frequent that I'll sneak around, one shot a bandit who doesn't know I'm there and the notification is that I've leveled up my sneak ability. Are both skills improving when I attack like that, or do I need to unstealth in order to be able to skill up my archery? Seems counter intuitive that I'd need to do that, but I'm not sure what else could be going on.

I'm pretty sure that a successful sneak attack counts toward leveling sneak. I've always assumed it also counts toward archery too -- that's just a slow-leveling skill.

I think a lot of my trouble is that Lydia is such a beast I'm not having to shoot as much as I was before. She tends to just bull her way into places and kill people while I'm sneaking around and trying to set up my shot. I like the extra protection she gives, but she's taking all my fun.

I was doing Lights Out and sneaking around the bandit camp in the grotto picking guys off. Got a couple of one shot kills. I saw both my sneak and archery skill increase. But both are still in the 20's. Keep in mind it takes longer to go from 30 to 31 than it does to go from 20 to 21.

Get some iron arrows and go pick a fight with a mammoth.

Yeah Lydia isn't big on stealth. If she sees an enemy relatively close all your plans are right out the window. She has grown on me though and is a huge help with the dragons.

Just tell Lydia to stay home.Archery is kinda slow-leveling. I use it on most dungeon crawls where there's a few guys and I have it up to maybe 55 or so. By comparison, my Destruction (my default damage-dealer) is about 83, my Restoration is about 63, and my Sneak is at 95 or so. But you definitely get credit/experience for sneak-bowing an enemy. Just keep using it, and keep Lydia out of ####, and it'll eventually keep moving up. The game has a pretty nice balance of how fast to level skills if you don't spam/grind them out on something.
Or you can keep her with you and just ask her to wait. But be advised ask her to wait well outside the action zone or she will ignore that command.

I have some weird woman from Whiterun as my companion right now. She joined me for free. I think its the chick I beat up in the bar. I also have a dog, but I told him to stay put in my house in Whiterun because his barking annoyed me. He is useful in battle though.

I too, got Lydia killed way too early.
