Anyone got a beat on how to score some Daedric Hearts?

I read the wiki. I was hoping for some double-top-secret homebrewed advice here.

Just got this game for Xmas for my PS3.

Looks great but I am competely lost. I'm on Level 1 or 2 runing around like a lunatic. Killed some dude in a town and now the whole town is after me. They don't let me give up and bring me to jail - they hack away at me until I'm dead.

Reading this thread it seesm like most of you are dozens of hours into this - the language some of you use doesn't even make sense.

Other than "save often" does anyone have any tips for a beginner. So big it's confusing as hell. Which chararcter should I choose to use? I think I need to start from scratch - I messed up my first time through and it's still early to start from scratch.

Any sites out there that can help? Any tips on what I need to do?

Edit to add: What should I be buying? Selling? Should I just save my gold? Steal stuff? Pickpocket as much as I can?
Don't just randomly kill people. Don't attack chickens either -- seriously.Any character is fine. Just pick a race that you like and run with it. A few of the racial bonuses are nice depending on your play style, but it's not that big a deal.

For now, don't buy much if you can avoid it. Eventually you'll want to buy a house, so you should save your coin for the one in Whiterun (5000 gold I think). Stealing and pickpocketing stuff won't get you much gold until you have access to a fence, which I think you can only get by joining the Thieves Guild. Unless you're going directly to that quest line, it's probably easier to acquire money the old fashioned way -- by doing quests and clearning out dungeons.

Other miscellaneous and oft-repeated advice:

[*]Do at least the first few quests in the main quest line. You'll want a few of the dragon shouts you learn. And you want dragons to appear in your game.

[*]Save the first half dozen or so perks points you get. Don't spend them until you sort of know what kind of play style you're going to have. You don't want to waste them on a skill tree that you end up not using.

How does Brawling work? I had a quest to convince some stalker type to leave a woman alone. When I went and talked to the guy he initially pretty much laughed me off and I got the persuade options. I tried to brawl him to convince him, but when I did that I was immediately attacked by everyone else in the tavern and Lydia jumped in and before I really knew what was going on I was dead and reloading. Did I do something wrong, or is that option best used when you're alone with a target?

Did you sheath any weapons/spells before brawling?

If you've done the daedric quests, there's one shrine that seems to feature respawning daedra. You can just fast-travel there, kill the two daedra (they attack you immediately so be ready), and take their hearts. Or you can just steal the one in the basement of the Companions HQ in Whiterun (Jorrvaskr).

:unsure:maybe? lol, most likely that's what happened. After the reload I ended up just bribing the guy for like 100 gold and got rewarded 150 for the quest, so not all was lost, just curious if I was doing something wrong.

There's got to be some gamer code shtick here. Here's my normal routine with a wolf;

1- hear a howl

2- I do a slow 360 to find a red dot/wolf

3- I see nothing so i continue on

4- Wolf attacks from behind and makes me tinkle

I hate alchemy. But I bit the bullet and learned what each ingredient did. Now I go into an alchemy shop and buy everything they own including deadra hearts. Then I mix potions and sell to the shop owner. I get all my money back plus ~ 500 gold. It also helps with alchemy and speech skills. It is a pain in the but I have more than enough deadra hearts.

I started over as an orc. The berserk skill is awesome. Better than shouts in tough situations IMHO.

wolf generally see you before you see them, so you will hear the howl before they are red-dot-able. listen for howl, scan 360 degrees, if you don't see anything....take 10 more steps, repeat scan.

I'm still really new myself (level 13), but here's what i've been doing:- Focused on some skills that would help me in basic fights and maneuvering of the early levels. Specifically Archery, Sneak, Two Handed, and Heavy Armor- Ran around a lot, without using fast travel at all. Basically just fighting, killing, collecting gold, and leveling up naturally- Stayed on the main quest but with a few side quests thrown in. If i got into a side quest and it seemed too intricate or difficult i just bailed- Now that I understand a little more about the skills, the game, and what i like, I am focused more on those skill trees. Things like Enchanting, Destruction, and Archery as it turns out.- I'm also sticking with the main quest as it is the most interesting to meNote if i started over, i would have gone with one handed instead of two handed from the start. I like the idea of a weapon in one hand and magic in the other more so than a big ol two handed kill toy

In Whiterun in the Companions building, you can find one in the downstairs room of the leader. In the mage college up north of Winterhold, you can buy them from... Enthir I think it is? The guy who you have to talk to him at his room in the evening to get his sales list, and who sells black soul gems.

Each time it has unequipped my spells for me at the start of the fight, I imagine it does the same with weapons. Don't cast any spells or draw a weapon. In my experience, if the onlookers attacked you it is because you punched one of the bystanders. If you move much the onlookers will move around too and sometimes get in the way, so have to be careful. As far as winning... playing as an Altmer gives you a nice reach advantage. I can often hit opponents while they get nothing but a swing and a miss. But as another race I would bait them into throwing a punch, step back so it misses then quickly move back in for a jab or two, and repeat. Control the distance so you are always just at the limit of their range to bait a punch so you can dodge back. I also frequently retreat, hit them as they come at me, step back to avoid their counter punch, then jab again. Once I take their health bar down so I have a decent lead, I wade in and just trade punches as fast as I can throw them until they go down, or I have to back away while I regain stamina.

I'm finding that I'm preferring the game when I play it in small bursts. I start hating it if I play for too long at once. I'm up to level 12 now. One thing I've learned so far is "don't piss off the giants!"

Stealing gold is ok if you can do it without getting caught. Stealing other items isn't worth it until you find the Thieves GUild and join them and get access to their fences.Don't attack normal people in towns. If you attack them in the wilds, you need to kill everyone there. If any witnesses get away alive you will still get a bounty for that area. Bandits and other aggressives don't count. In the first town, find either Sven or the wood elf Faendal and talk to them. Help one of them win the heart of the woman they are interested in. I suggest you side with Faendal because he can train archery while Sven doesn't have any extra benefit like that. Once you are finished, you can ask him to follow you. After you can talk to him to trade equipment with him, and he will help you if you get into a fight. In the beginning as you are learning the game, focus mostly on doing the main quest for a little bit. I always suggest it for access to a home and to get dragons active in the game, but it will also get you into the swing of things and help keep you from feeling overwhelmed if you have something to focus on.I wouldn't blow a lot of money on items right away. Either use it with a trainer to increase an ability you think you'll use, use it to buy spells if you wish to use a lot of magic, or save it for a house where you'll be able to store your equipment you don't want to be carrying all the time.Once you take the main quest to the point that you have killed a dragon, then maybe spend some time around whiterun talking to people, getting quests from them, and completing them. You can often get bounties you can pursue if you talk to the bartenders in the bars and inns.If you're a mage, I'd suggest going to the mage college early, after killing the dragon. There is a wagon outside of Whiterun's stables, which the main quest will have taken you to, which you can ride for a few coins to major cities. Normally I suggest walking, but if you're brand new and a mage, you might want to hop the wagon to Winterhold where the college is.

Oh and here are some useful spells to get even if you are not a mage. Some of them you may have already depending on starting race:

Clairvoyance - shows you the direction to go to the next objective of your currently selected quest)

Healing - heal yourself

Healing Hands - can heal other people, like your follower

Soul trap - cast on a creature before killing it, and if you have an empty soul gem it captures his soul for use in enchanting items or recharging magic weapons and staffs. Can also just find/buy a weapon that has it as the enchantment

Conjure Fire Atronach - having someone else for opponents to focus on helps tremendously

Fury - causes people to attack other people. Great when used against a group of opponents who haven't seen you yet.

Had one of those total war moments while gaining access to Sky Haven Temple.

I ran over to the mountain and was smack dab in the middle of a war between Delphine/Ebsen(?), a camp of Forsworns (probably about 7-10), a Frost Dragon, a Hagraven, a wolf and a cave bear.

I proceed to hop right into the battle and kill Forsworns that are distracted by the dragon.

It was pretty epic, one after another things trying to come at me when trying to slay a dragon.

Hilarious and fun at the same time

Same thing happened to me there, except I had a Daedra and Shadowmere whopping butt too. Total chaos. Good times.

I agree with this. The couple times I've had marathon sessions I've gotten a bit burned out, but sitting down and going through a quest or two is perfect.

Eradicating a Town Fun!

Option 1:

Deck out your follower in Legendary Ebony or Daedric armor enchanted with as much +2-handed attack and armor/health as you can.

Get them an awesome 2-handed sword with Absorb enchant (And Fire if you can double)

Tell them to attack a guard in a big city

Conjure a Daedric Demon Lord (or two?) [Optional]

Shout for your dragon if you completed the main quest line [Optional]

Eat a sweet roll

Option 2:

Cast a fire rune in the middle of a Jarl's palace

Cast a fire wall around you in a circle

Cast flame cloak on yourself

Get your Heal-Self spell ready

Now cast a super-charged Fireball at the Jarl

Eat a sweet roll

Big fan of these ideas.

Still having a hard time determining when talk to strangers - out in the wild - and when to shoot on sight.

Saw one guy coming towards me, killed him, found out he was loaded with books  and he had an actual name, not "bandit" or something.

Later four guys walking along looking right at me - no hostilities - then after two pass and two still in front I hear "You should have never come here!"

BTW fought my first poisonous dragon today

Dragon floats down in front of me, blasts me with the flame breath, I'm shooting arrows into the flame, kind of watching my health and suddenly see the status "You are poisoned." Sweet, this is new. Dragon floats back down, resume normal combat except when he flies up I'm still taking a little damage. Finally kill the dragon and I'm STILL taking damage. Turns out a freaking spider - out in the wild, not in a spiderwebby cave - is biting my ### right at the moment the dragon is in my face. :hot:

How to max out everything to 100.

Get the book Ogham Infinium. Activate the book shelf to store the book. When the book opens you pick from one of three groups: magic, might or shadow. You then receive 5 points to ~ 5 skills from that group, or about 25 skill points. After you put the book on the shelf pick it back up. Don't read it, rather put it in your inventory. Repeat he process as often as you want.

In truth it kind of ruins the game. You max out all you skill in about 5 minutes.

I ran into my first spiders the other day. I was walking through tall grass and all the sudden the something bad music is playing and I am taking damage. But I don't see anything. So I'm looking for where the arrows are coming from when Lydia finally catches up and starts killing things on the ground, that's when I saw the spiders. There were a bunch of them.

Spiders suck, but the things I really hate are the Chaurus. Those things can just suck it.

Anyone completed The Forsworn Conspiracy quest?

No was way I going to prison for stuff I didn't do, so I killed the guards inside the shrine. Outside the shrine, more guards came at me, so I ran as fast as I could out of the city, jumped in the river and rode about 5 waterfalls down the mountain.

Am I forever persona non grata in Markarth now?

I ran into something weird the other day maybe you guys know what it was. I was walking through a snowy region and all of the sudden I was under attack from this mostly transparent "snow worm". Very tough, took Lydia and I out several times. Never did kill it. Just reloaded and went wide around where it was spawning.

While this is normally the only way to find out, those marks don't show up until they've already spotted you and are attacking you which takes away any pre-emptive advantage you'd want in the wild.

Those are Ice Wraiths. You can kill them, but if you're early in the game they can kill you quickly.

Can someone tell me how beneficial over-charging your spells are?

I got the perk, see that it takes more mana and does more damage, but no idea how much better they are or if they're even worth it. The only quantifiable effect I've been able to conclude is that it takes more mana to over-charge a spell than casting it twice regularly. About 250-300% mana from the eye-ball test. But does an over-charged fireball do more damage than 2 regular fireballs? If not, why does it cost more mana than two? From my experience it does about equal or less damage, but it could be my accuracy and it's difficult to tell as 1-2 fireballs usually kill the enemy regardless of overcharging.

Yes there's the benefit of stagger, but if that's the main benefit, it's better to use a lower-ranked spell like firebolt over a much higher-mana but higher-damage one like inferno to just abuse the stagger and spam it for little mana cost. However, this also means over-charging higher level spells is meaningless if it does equal or less damage-per-mana ratio to 2 normal casts.

Also, what about other spells like flame wall and fire shield? Do those increase in damage? It costs the same 250-300% mana so you'd assume it does but it's hard to see any damage difference and there's no stagger with these spells so the only benefit is the damage if there is any.

Also what if you supercharge a conjured Atronarch or Daedra? Are they more powerful? Damage-wise or health-wise?

I've searched google for this and have come up with nothing specific :(

Im lost here. What do you mean by overcharging your spells or mana?

I had a fun dragon slaying last night. I got an elder dragon down to half health and as he was getting ready to take off, I used the call lighting shout on it. Lightning struck it several times as it flew and eventually killed it as it flew. The kill stroke came as it was flying at me, so its body flew at me, hit the ground, and slowly came to a stop right in front of me. I felt very much like the Legolas in the ROTK movie when he brought down the Olyphant.

How far along are you in the game? Have you found the Aura Whisper yet? That would help you out significantly.

Finally finished all of the achievements. Fun times! I think my wife will be happy to have me back after 400+ hours played.

Yes. I initially did the same thing you did, but then read the quest walkthrough. You are missing more along that quest line by running, I would fast travel back to Markarth and get inside the Shrine, the whole scene will respawn for you and give you the choice again.

BTW fought my first poisonous dragon today  Dragon floats down in front of me, blasts me with the flame breath, I'm shooting arrows into the flame, kind of watching my health and suddenly see the status "You are poisoned." Sweet, this is new. :hot:
I ran into my first spiders the other day. I was walking through tall grass and all the sudden the something bad music is playing and I am taking damage. But I don't see anything. So I'm looking for where the arrows are coming from when Lydia finally catches up and starts killing things on the ground, that's when I saw the spiders. There were a bunch of them.
Spiders suck, but the things I really hate are the Chaurus. Those things can just suck it.
I ran into something weird the other day maybe you guys know what it was. I was walking through a snowy region and all of the sudden I was under attack from this mostly transparent "snow worm". Very tough, took Lydia and I out several times. Never did kill it. Just reloaded and went wide around where it was spawning.
Ice Wraith. Not really tough but really hard to hit since they move fast! If you have perked your archery enough you can slow down and zoom in either 25% or 50%, that's very helpful with these guys IMO.

for those who have finished the main storyline, how much do I have left?

Have the elder scroll transcribed in that cube for nutjob IceCave guy, now I'm collecting the 5 blood types for him. I haven't gone back to talk to the timscrochkitt dragon since finding the scroll, I still need to do that.

Any secret tips on where to get refined moonstone or moonstone ore? I just unlocked elven smithing but now I can't find any moonstone to smith elven gear. I've been to a couple smiths with not much luck. How often do their inventories refresh?

That's not the main quest, but probably the best one in the game to complete.

How tough are the random dragons you come across? I saw one last night flying overhead when I was behind Dragonsreach. The terrain was terrible if I needed cover, and I'm only level 11 so I watched him circle overhead for a while then he flew around the castle. I hopped on an abandoned bandit's horse and chased after it but couldn't catch up/find it again. I figured if it was just me and Lydia fighting it, we'd both get slaughtered, but was hoping he'd stick around close enough to where I could pull him to some guards and we'd have a little additional backup, but no dice. Kind of disappointed that I missed the chance to fight him.

You are almost there. But the quest you are doing now is not part of main quest. I would say there are 3-4 more quests still to go

I am a level 12 and I have killed a couple of dragons just me and Lydia.

Assuming they will follow the method they used with Oblivion and Fallout -- every 2 months or so you'll get the option to DL an expansion pack from xbox live. it will cost around $10. It will open up new quest/storylines that will take you a couple days to finish.
