General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (2 Viewers)

What are some strategies you guys are employing? What types of weapons? How much magic should I mix in?
i think you gotta choose a hand combat tree for close encounters, at least get the first couple of levels of your favorite weapon type. two hand is way more powerful but less block, 1 hand has dual wield, shields, and can cast magic. I also improved my smithing early by making iron daggers until I was up to 100. 100 Smithing lets you make the best weapons and armors which help alot. Try to improve your sneak, sneak + bow is a good combo, sneak everywhere, when you going shopping, mowing the lawn, etc. Basically just keep playing, haha, if you cant kill something, come back for it later when you've built up. In the beginning, If I was on my own I ran from dragons to the nearest town so I could get help.I dont have too much magic but did make sure to get restoration.
I don't have anything in my one handed or two handed. At level 40-something my one handed might be at around 25. Stealth, archery and destruction magic have been more than sufficient to get me through and I never do dungeons with companions. When things have gotten hairy, I've used conjuration (or Sanguine Rose) if I need to divert attention off myself. Now, if you're saying that you need a Plan B to Archery, then I would agree but it doesn't have to be one handed or two handed. Destruction or Conjuration can also do the job.

I have to figure out what to do for close encounters as well. I think I want to dual wield daggers and basically just model myself after a combo of Legolas and Jarlaxle, two of my favorite characters in Fantasy novels. Bow sniping from afar, destruction and restoration magic, and then daggers when I have too. I pretty much don't like ti when anyone gets within 20 feet of me. Lydia helps with that though.

Any tips on aiming spells? I miss with Firebolt/Lightning Bolt a solid 70% of the time. Maybe I just suck. Also, I use fire for pretty much everything but mages...does the stamina damage from Frost spells actually help?

very true, I'm def going to have to replay as a magic character

I use fire pretty much exclusively. I have one perk to increast electricity damage as a backup but I rarely need to use it.

Lightning bolt is a lot easier for me to aim because you don't get that heat distortion obscuring the target like you do with firebolt.Lightning bolt is nearly instantaneous so just get the reticle on the target. Firebolt you may need to lead people.Once you have the stagger perk, things get much easier since one hit normally causes them to hold still, making additional shots much easier. Assuming you dual cast everything, that is.Archery... if you are on PC there is an edit you can do to your .ini file so that the arrow actually is aimed right where your target reticle is placed. By default arrows actually aim higher than that spot. The little I used a bow on a previous incarnation of my character, it was much easier after the edit. If anyone wants to do it let me know and I'll dig up how to do it.

I gotta get my destruction to 40 asap to get the staggering. I don't dual cast right now because I'm pretty constantly using the most basic heal yourself spell in my left and bolting with the right. Or I just use "Flames" and spray at people.

PS3, btw

And the sheathing thing worked to pull my arrow back. Probably should have thought of that, but thanks guys!

I am having trouble with combat. I am not sure if its just because I am old and havent got the same dexterity as when I was young, if my gear just sucks or if my tactics are bad.I use a bow for sniping. My bow is a basic Dwarven bow with 20 damage. I am using basic Dwarven arrows which do 14 damage.I dont have the 6x perk, which I think is one of my problems. It seems like when guys get one me it takes forever to kill them and I die pretty regularly. I havent put any perks into the one-hand or 2-hand because I havent researched enough to find out what is worth it.What are some strategies you guys are employing? What types of weapons? How much magic should I mix in?Forget dragons, they eat my lunch....but that probably has to do with tactics.
Jack of all trades master of none. Pick a discipline and stick with it. Are you going to be a archer type? A sneak/dagger killer? Sword and shield? Two handed tank? IMO it's best to decide on one main tactical approach and then supplement it with another discipline.Don't worry about "picking the wrong thing" because there is no such thing. If you don't like how a character is working then start up a new one. I'm probably on my 4th or 5th iteration. I had a Redguard that was an assassin/thief that specialized in thwacking people with arrows. I got pretty far along and I scrapped her and now have a destruction/conjuration mage. It's fun to try different things.
This. You can even focus on a couple perks and still have enough to go around. Since you've already got decent archery, i'd recommend sneak/dagger style with it. That way your sneak will benefit both archery and your one handed attacks.Or you could build out like i am with great archery/sneak and two handed skills. makes no sense but it works out for me. i just spray them with arrows until they figure out where i am, pop up and smash them with a power 2 handed attack

"Flames" sucks. It's awful. If the damage increased with your skill level, it would be worthwhile but as it stands, you should never use it.

Wait one second, you have to hold the button longer in order to use the more powerful version of the shout? :bag: Level 20 with numerous shouts and I had no clue.
Level 47 and only tap it when I even remember I have shouts. :bag: :bag: Thanks for the heads up GR. Maybe disarm will actually work now.
Glad it helps. I didn't realize it either until the Greybeards. When you first go to them and do their first test, if you only used the first word they mention you aren't doing it right and have to hold your breath longer or something like that, was how I figured it out.
i did that and mustve balnked it from my memory lol

Oh, one other very general thing about aiming. I often find in first person shooters that once I get the cursor close to my target, it is easier to aim by moving sideways with the left stick for those fine adjustements than it is by using the right stick.

Weird, I can't seem to do whatever it is you need to do to be able to buy the house in Solitude. Both the Jarl and her guy that is her go-between have no quests for me and I don't have the option to buy a house from the guy either.

Do I need to do more quests for other people in Solitude first or something?

:bag: what destruction spell do you recommend? im level 20 and almost exclusively use flames. they all seem kind of weak to me but now i think i can purchase some spells higher than novice finally

Its been a while since I bought my Solitude house so forgive me if I am vague/incorrect.
Try talking to the mage chick that is next Falk Firebeard and do some quests for her, then it will open up some other quests from Falkner and eventually the Jarl, that will eventually gain you the trust of the her and after THAT you should be good to go and purchase a home in Solitude.(if that doesnt work, try doing Bard's College storyline and that may have something to do with it as well)

Any of the ranged spells (firebolt, ice spike, lightning) are all good if you dual cast with the stagger perk. Specialize in one to get the extra damage with maybe a second as backup. I don't find the top level tiers (make them disintegrate, run away, etc) to be worth it since it wonly happens when they are low on health and about to die anyway. The area effect spells (fireball, chain lightning, ice storm) are all great but take significantly more mana. I like fireball the best because I like making things go boom and bodies flying everywhere. Your aim also doesn't have to be all that great.

Use the best one you can get.I like lightning bolt for the 2nd group of spells because of the heat distortion from firebolt. The next group though, I like fireball a lot more than chain lightning.I haven't used the frost ones much at all. Though after fighting a few mages and getting stuck moving at a crawl because of their spells draining my stamina, they might be better than I'd originally thought they would be. I put my perks into shock though, and only added fire much later. Haven't upped frost damage yet.

By the way, if you're using destruction as your main combat, then items that give Fortify Destruction are the best items for you. They significantly reduce your casting costs even at lower levels.

Yep. I use a Ring and a Helm that I have found in addition to robes. Can't wait to get enchanting high enough to make some armor with Fortify Destruction instead of the robes. When enchanting armor, does the level of soul gem change the enchantment strength?

For persisitent enchantments, yes. For things that have a charge, it increases the number of uses.

In case anyone else didn't notice also, when you do a weapon enchant you can change the power to get more or less charges too. I can enchant a fire damage thing for up to 12 or 14 points, but I knock them down to around 7 or 8 and get a ton more charges.

Personally I would max out the damage and take the fewer charges. It's very easy to buy soul gems and fill them up to recharge your weapon with.

Unless you maxed out Enchantment really early, the robes bought from the mage college will probably be better than what you can make yourself. The rest though (ring, necklace, and helmet can hold fortify destruction) you can often make better than what you'll find or buy.

:goodposting: that's my approach. Have to imagine you get more exp for a bigger enchantment as well.I'm sure Greg has that formula memorized or saved in an ini file or something. :nerd:

OK was THIS normal???

So I'm in in Winterrun and I have Lydia with me....one of the missions was to go and talk to the Companions leader. Which I did. He send me outside with his guy and tells him to see what I got...in the middle of our brief exchange Lydia starts attacking me. She got a little fire on her during our exchange and I ended up killing her. Was this part of the plan or am I going to miss her now because of this? My closest save point is right after taking out the dragon at the watch tower so if I dont need her I'd like to keep it as it is if possible. The help is appreciated.

Nope, thats no bueno.

She's gone now. RIP

i cant believe ive been missing out on fireball and lighting bolt all this time. what an idiot i am. i was level 54 in destruction. just took down a blood dragon and giant in one battle. my first for both! ok they had something to do with knocking half their health down but whos counting?

Since I was wondering this myself, I just looked up on the wiki what skill level you have to hit for spells to be available for purchase.

Adept spells show up when your skill in that field hits 40.

Expert are available at a skill level of 65.

Tomes can be found in dungeon loot at lower levels than that, though.

NOOB ALERT.

So I used a gift card to pick the game up. I install it, being new to steam, how do I know if my game is up to date with patches etc?

TIA

Big Gay Orc is the direct opposite of this. His Two-Handed is pretty high (85ish) and most of his perks are in there. I know I ignore 50% of an opponent's armor when I swing a hammer. However, he has no archery perks (doesn't even carry a bow) and the only magic school he bothers with is Restoration. The guy makes a living charging in with weapons held high. If I run up against a tough mage who's backing away and chucking ice spikes at me, I use shouts to slow him down and close in - either Slow Time or Ice Form. Either works to get me in melee range, then it's one or two swings and his head is literally rolling on the ground.ETA: the side swipe power swing perk in Two-Handed is absolute money. Last night I was swamped by 4 high powered ghost/spirits at the end of a dungeon, and I was spinning around hitting all four with each swing. Took all of them out in 3 swings of Volendrung.

:lmao: I should take a pic. He's pretty badass looking.

Also, this isn't shtick in case you're wondering. Here's who his husband is -

It's the blacksmith in Shor's Stone, a small mining town north of Riften. How you doing?. He calls me "honey" and "dear." All gayness aside, he's a pretty good mate to have. If you "move" into his place you get access to a chest where you can dump all your smithing stuff - ore, ingots, dragon bones and scales. His smithy is full service with a smelter just around the corner by the mine (iron ore mine). He's a decent weapons and armor merchant. Plus every few days he gives you up to 1000 gold as profits from his business.

how do you execute this move? my character is kinda similar, a two-hand hammer slinging thief alchemist with little magic but a potion for every situation

You hold down the swing button (R1 on PS3) while moving left or right at the same time. I'm sure Youtube has a primer on power moves somewhere. Another nice one is the running charge. When sprinting toward someone, hold down the swing button. You'll jut forward suddenly while dropping your sword on their head. Power moves can kill your stamina, so be wary. I'm lucky. I have Volendrung, which is the official warhammer of the Orc god (who's also a Daedric Lord). It sucks 50 stamina on every hit. So you never run out of juice and each hit hurts your opponent's ability to counter. Awesome, awesome weapon.

If I just dump all my stuff on the floor of the house in Whiterun, it'll be there when I get back, right?

And what if I put it in the chest inside my home? I don't want to carry all these damn dragon bones and scales anymore, but I don't want to lose them either.

Put it in the chest to be safe.

I thought I'd never need stamina as a sneaky archer/mage, but the slow-down-time effect drains your stamina faster than running does. Ugh.

Chests, dressers, end stands, I use them all. I like to keep my stuff organized, so what I did was:Chest in alchemy room - Weapons and anything that can be used to upgrade weapons (ingots, leather strips, scales, bones, etc)Chest in bedroom - Armor (hey, that's where you clothes should be, in the bedroom)End stand to the left of the bed - JewelsEnd stand to the right of the bed - Books and scrolls, to include notesCupboard downstairs nearest the fire - Ingredients and extra potionsDresser at top of the stairs - Nothing as I didn't see it until after I organizedSo, in other words, don't think you can only use chests. There is a ton of storage in your home that will allow you to keep your crap organized. It may not seem like a big deal early on, but it can be a real time saver later.

Build your enchanting skills, and you can imbue a few items with extra stamina. As a pure archer, everything that can increase archery does just that. The other things, I added an extra 50 points of stamina (armor and boots I think). That allows me to put a lot more points in to health. Or you could reverse it, put health in to your armor and bump stamina. Either way, same result.

Im level 4 and have 4 perks. I'm thinking of using them on the one-handed swing (I'm a Redguard) and I just wanted to confirm something before I did it anyway. The very first slot in the perk constellation says something to the effect of "adds 20% to strikes" then says 0/5. My question would be, do I not get this perk until I put 5 perks in that slot?

It will go up 20% each time until you basically have double the damage. It will reflect that each time you take the perk. i.e. After you take the first perk, it will say "adds 40% to strikes."

You get 20% per perk

Yes, sometimes when you have lots of items in a pile, they can fall through the floor or just plain disappear as they bump against each other and bounce around too much. Definitely keep things in containers.

At level 4 you won't be able to spend 4 perks to get 80 percent better. You have to have a certain skill level to be able to spend the perk, even if you have perks to spend.

I use a very similar set up. :nerd:
