General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (3 Viewers)

My Alchemy is at 100 and I haven't found a way to make potions that are better than +10% enchanting. You can find potions that are +20% and +30%. Use those sparingly / wisely.
was wondering if any knows if you take multiple potions, do the effects stack to higher potency?
They did in Morrowind, and it was one of the more blatant game breaking aspects of that game. Create an enhance alchemy potion, drink it, create another one and the next potion is stronger and lasts longer, keep doing this until the potion you create essentially lasts forever. This let you create enhance enchanting potions which could have similarly absurd power/duration and then fire up the arcane enchanter to enchant up some game breaking armor/weapons.

I posted a bunch of the recipes for the better potions here. Looks like I left out Fortify Enchanting though:

Fortify Enchanting:

Blue Butterfly Wing

Hagraven Claw

Snowberries

Spriggan Sap
Cool, thanks.

Did you put perks into Alchemy? And are you wearing 4 items with Fortify Alchemy on them?My Fortify Enchanting potions are over +25% IIRC.

oh. derp. I'm wearing enchanted items x 4 but I don't think I took any alchemy perks.

Curious if what I am noticing is a bug or WAI - when I go back to dragon roosts to kill respawning dragons, they are not giving me souls to absorb anymore. The body just sits there and doesn't change. Anyone else notice this? Didn't know if that was intentional with respawns and souls only came with original dragon kills/random events.

Interesting new discovery - playing this at night with the lights off and wearing your new cordless Xbox headphones that you got for Xmas makes for a much creepier experience  I haven't jumped this much since track and field day in elementary school
I remember playing Resident Evil 2 with the lights out and surround sound going -- that used the scare the chit out of me.
Surround sound, 117" Screen, Bioshock = Literally the most scared I think I have ever been in my life.
Tell me more about these headphones. What model? do you like them?
I can't speak for him but I got the wired turtle bay headset for Christmas and they are really great. It has a more then adequate 15ft chord and the sound quality is really good. Sounds I never knew where there, I can hear now. I was looking into these prior to me asking my wife for them for Christmas and read some of the wireless models suffer from buzzing/interference. Price was also a factor. If you want great sound at a bargain, you can't go wrong with these. I would love to try the wireless versions, but too scared to drop >$150 and not like them.

After reading a lot of people's stuff here and watching some videos I think I'm the only one rolling arounded with a one-handed sword...should I move on with the two-handed swords/axes/hammers?

Do you dual wield them? I sport two daedric swords and they re completely bad ###. Takes down a dragon in three hits. The only weapons I carry are two daedric daggers, two daedric swords and a pick axe. :rulez:

I use my bow, and I carry two daggers I enchant with me as well. It'll be nice when they aren't Flaming Steel Daggers but something actually good instead haha.

Right now I just have one. I'm a level 4 now but I wasn't sure after reading a lot if I was heading in an unsuccessful direction. Right now I think I have a fine steel sword. Should I get another?

I would either get another or get a shield. Don;t just leave one hand empty - unless it's for magic?

Mainly a bow user but, when I wield a blade, I'm usually single. A dagger if I am sneaking (for the 15x damage with the perk), or a single blade plus shield when I am forced in to melee. Just try and figure out early which direction you want to go and stick with it so you don't waste precious perks. As an aside, my next playthrough. I intend to go single blade fighter, with destruction spells in the off hand. But admittedly, two handed weapons have never interested me in any RPG I have played. I'm much more likely to dual wield than go two handed. So, I guess what I am saying it, it is just a matter of player preference. This isn't one of those games that requires the perfect build to be dominant. You can become dominant with about any combo you enjoy using. So do what is fun for you.

My first character was intended to be a 1 handed sword / destruction magic guy. I ended up virtually never using the magic. It's tough to concentrate on doing both at once.

Yeah right now it's a steal sword in one hand and fire in the other. On my way to missions or caves and stuff I'll switch to something that's low or close to leveling up like two-handed or my bow. Right now I have 4 perks in my pocket. I was thinking of going one on one-handed, Destruction, smithing and two-handed. I'm just scared to use them lol

I'm thinking my next build is definitely gonna be a sword/shield guy who does the whole heavy armor business. Right now I'm like a glass cannon. If I see you first, you're dead. But if you get to swing at me twice, I'm totally screwed.

So I'm on my way up the stairs to High Hrothgar, and I keep running into people who all say the same thing: "Watch out for all the wolves if you're going to Hrothgar."

So I'm on the lookout for wolves all the way up, I even own a snow troll, and then I got raped by bears on three separate occasions. WTF people. No wolves. Just bears mauling and eating me.

At lvl 4 you're fine, but like Instinctive said, don't go empty handed. Dual wield or have a shield. (blocking is for poosies ;) )Just creat a better sword each time you're able to as your smithing goes up. I think it's Orcish, dwarven, ebony and daedric. So you can get really good swords pretty quickly. THe dual sword/daggers is pretty fun with some of the moves they pull off

Also thinking the same thing. I've done three characters and all have been light armor sneaks. What's your current guy?

Right now I'm all bow and sneak, but then I have Destruction magic too - I mostly fight dragons with Lightning Bolt. And then I have daggers that I should dual wield on stuff, but I never remember to use them. My bow is kick-###, Flawless Elven and I'm pretty low level, but the daggers kinda suck, although one is Dwarven of Consuming, which absorbs health on hits apparently. I should use them, but I truly am all sneak, bow, magic.

Question about these secret stones--

I currently have the combat stone. I found the 3 after the beginning if the game but I've been reading about this Steed stone. If I get this will I have to forfeit the combat one?

yes, you can only activate one at a time. Steed stone is the one you want

I am having a blast bashing people in the face with a shield then decapitating them with a one-hander. Think I only have three or so perks in block, but an opportune shield to the face has really helped cut down on some of those damn ice spike salvos if you can get in close.Just started into archery to level faster and I must say that even when you don't get the sneak attack off, two arrows and a shout to fling them across the cave just before they splat you with a war hammer, followed by two more arrows is fun too.

I've had a number of dragons who didn't give me souls, but it didn't seem tied to being at a roost I'd cleared already. I've gotten souls, and not gotten them, at such places... and I've gotten souls and not at places like the mage college.

In addition to getting a better type of sword (i.e. getting Orcish when you're using steel), don't forget that you aren't limited to improving an item just once. When your Smithing goes up a few points, you can improve your existing Steel sword to a higher bonus than you got the first time.

What's the best way to get smithing up to 60 so I can improve magical items? I'm level 24 and have pretty much ignored smithing to this point. Also, I'm an archer/mage, how can you enchant your robes to have armor? I'm wearing the ones that regenerate your magika 100% faster.

Super noob question - I just started and have already switched it but WHY is default Left Mouse for your right hand and Right mouse your left hand?

Dual wielding I get confused :bag:

my first character was one handed, bound sword in right hand and switched between conjuration and restoration in the left hand. eventually used shield in left hand when my conjuration topped out and i wanted to keep leveling.

I just had the most epic battle ever. So I'm walking past this mill, around 3 AM, on my way to clear out a bandit camp for some loot and a bounty. Stupid Lydia following me as always, suddenly I can't see anything but flames and I'm almost dead.

I heal myself with fast healing and look for Lydia - she's gone. A blood dragon lands right behind me, so I start to lightning bolt it as much as I can, as fast as I can, while running around the millhouse to avoid fire. Then, right when it't at half health and I'm in a rhythm...another dragon starts owning me from the sky and lands right behind me. So I run like hell.

Lydia is still nowhere to be found. Of course.

So I run away, keep using lightning at whichever one I can. Then all the sudden the normal dragon is gone and it's me against a mostly healthy Blood Dragon who then flies across a raging river and lands again. He;s out of range, so I splash through the water, climb the cliff, and see the dragon engaged with a Giant. Oops, I stumbled into a camp of Giants. Awesome.

Lydia...nowhere to be found. Assumed dead.

So I start hitting the dragon again, I heal myself with "Fast Healing" and then go back to dual casting bolts of lightning. Finally, with the giants' help (yes, plural) the dragon is taken down. So then the giants turn to me. And I'm screwed.

Lydia = gone.

So I run into this tight little area of trees, get them stuck on one side and blast them through the trees I'm in until they figure out to run around. So I run through the trees again and hit them from the other side. I finally kill one, and the other runs away. I am incredibly relieved, so I go into sneak mode to make sure he doesn't come back.

He comes back. And it looks like he's gonna see me, so I pull out my Flawless Scorching Elven Bow (my prize achievement of enchanting so far haha) and hit him with sneak attack 3.0x damage arrows twice, then it's back to the lightning bolt and run through the trees while he goes around strategy. I finally bring him down. I get the dragon loot, then each giant, then I take a moment to catch my breath after a hectic battle.

And Lydia runs up next to me. ####.

Sounds like fun. Lydia will use a bow. Chances are she was and you just didn't see her.

I know she has a bow. I'm pretty sure what happened is she either got stuck in the river or she ran down the path, across a bridge to an island, across another bridge and around up to me, by which time the fight was over. I thought it was more humorous told this way though ;)

Steed stone is nice but the Lover stone gives you a 15% bonus to advancement in all skills all the time.
You can get the 15% bonus to skill advancement by instead getting married and sleeping near your spouse (doesn't stack with Lover stone). So you can get that bonus and still have the Steed stone bonus if you wish. Now that said... I think one of the flaws of Skyrim is that the majority of skills advance too fast, especially with training available. I don't want to be hitting 100 in my main skills when I'm only 20% of the way through the questlines. So I'm not real keen on increasing my level rates to start with. Once the construction set is out I'll be slowing the leveling rates down for a lot of skills.

Super noob question - I just started and have already switched it but WHY is default Left Mouse for your right hand and Right mouse your left hand?Dual wielding I get confused :bag:
Yes, I thought that was stupid. I remapped the buttons so right is right and left is left. I guess they meant it to be that the normal primary mouse button (left) is your primary hand (right). But I always got confused, so I swapped them. It's been awhile since I did it (as I then replaced the mouse with a 360 controller anyway). If you can't swap it in the normal Control menu, let me know and I can probably set you up with an .ini file that will swap it.

:goodposting:I'm a two handed tank build orc. Nothing really holds a challenge for my character anymore, I will probably bang out the main quest line as quick as I can and then do another build. Either sneaky assasin guy or Evil Mage from Hell guy.

And I'm screwed.Lydia = gone.So I run into this tight little area of trees, get them stuck on one side and blast them through the trees I'm in until they figure out to run around. ####.
 :lmao:

Have to admit, today knocked some of the luster off of this game for me. Not only did I get stuck doing three straight quests in Dwarven ruins, which were all way to long and repetitious (as always with those things), I have started getting lockups about once per hour. The only thing worse than having to trudge through a dwarven dungeon, is having to do it twice because you forgot to save every 2 minutes because of lockups. It was a very frustrating session to say the least.

Ok, quick question for the archers. How are you doing the last few level ups? Once I got to about 92 or so, I just seem to have gotten stuck. I did the 5 free level ups from the lady in the mountains, and can't get any more training from Faendal or Nuerian in the guild. I use a bow almost exclusively, switching to a blade only when cornered or sneaking up on someone in bed or something. I would say a bow accounts for a good 97%-98% of my kills. I have tried doing the iron arrow/mammoth thing, but those encounters seem few and far between and even then, they don't advance me much. Are any of you carrying a basic, non-enchanted bow just so you can fire more arrows or what? How do you get to that elusive 100%? I really do want that final perk.

I went from 93 to 100 filling shadowmere with arrows. :bag: He doesn't mind.

Besides shadomere, how are you guys getting your archery up so high, training? I am at like 57 and it barely ever moves now and all I ever do is use my bow.

So far I have leveled two characters, spending roughly 50 hours on each.

A full destruction Mage who is getting to be overpowered at level 16

A Ranger (Bow One handed sneaky dagger guy) who is level 19, and is a ton of fun to play.

After getting my first stealth kill animation with my Ranger, I am really chomping at teh bit to start a giant Orc axe wielding murderous thug who beheads everybody he sees!

I always use the worst arrows available (Forsworn, falmer, etc). At this point I'm not too concerned with quick kills and would rather take 3-4 arrows to kill something than a single one. I still use good arrows for dragons, dungeon boss, and the occasional assassination. But run of the mill hunting and dungeon clearing is with the low powered stuff.

That's my guy now. If you feel your mage is overpowered you might want to rethink it, my orc is so overpowered the game has got a bit boring.

I have a feeling any given skill can be "overpowered" if it's focused on. There's been a lot of discussion already on archery getting overpowered quickly with perks, enchantments, and simply leveling the skill. But looking at the skill constellations for perks, it seems like the same thing could happen with any combat style.I think my next character will be a generalist, switching primary weapons each quest and dabbling in a little but of everything.

ETA: I may need to up the difficulty too. I'm playing with default so that may be part of it.
