General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

So, I apparently have some sort of disease. How do I get rid of it? I don't know exactly what it is, but everyone I talk to tells me I don't look well, and in a dragon battle last night when I zoomed with my bow and slowed time, my arrow was wavering around like I couldn't hold the bow steady.

I find that with each of my characters, a "home town" evolves from gameplay (after Riverwood).

1. My first guy (assassin/sniper) I met the bard in Riverwood and got intrigued by his stories of a Bard's College in this far off city, Solitude. So I ditched visiting Whiterun and headed straight north after only doing the Golden Claw quest. I had to be level 7 or 8. It was a treacherous journey and I died several times, got lost in the mountains, and thought about turning around a couple times. Then I stumbled upon the small city Morthal. After such a nasty journey I decided to stop here and settle in a bit. I ended up staying for awhile and doing all the city-related quests. When I finally left, I was Thane of Morthal and secretly a vampire. If there was a house available, I would have definitely "lived" there. Even though he ended up settling in Riften, I always feel Morthal as his hometown, so to speak.

2. Big Gay Orc was almost executed by the Imperials. Big Gay Orc went to Riverwood with the rebel. So the first thing Big Gay Orc did was trek to Windhelm to join the Stormcloaks. He eventually bought the house there and it's been his home ever since.

3. My third guy (whom I haven't played much) is a mage, so he headed straight for Winterhold with few adventures on the way. I guess the college is his home.

There's some diseases that you need more help with once it's further along but for most of them, buying a Cure Disease potion or finding god and praying at an altar will take care of it for you.
Go to a shrine and "activate" the little statue there. It will cure all diseases for free. If you've been to Whiterun, go to the Talos shrine in the middle of the city. I use it all the time for this.

I am a werewolf for the mere fact I dont get diseased.

Everytime someone has told me that I just drink a cure disease potion and that seems to take care of it. I always carry a couple of these around just for that reason.

It's fascinating how many different tacts people take to the game. Hearing that some actually avoid visiting entire cities surprises me, that never occurred to me as an option. It seems that a lot of the quests, particularly radiant, require visits to most cities, if even for those small jaunts.
I'll at least visit the city or map item if i find it. If for nothing else but to have the detailed map should i need it at some point. But i have recently started to avoid any tasks or quests within some cities if possible.I already know the direction i want to take my 2nd character so i'm trying to make sure i leave as many fresh places as possible for that guy
That's cool. I guess for me I'm looking at this as a one and done experience. I generally don't get into these games (or at least I haven't in years), and this one pulled me in for the first time in a long time (five/six years), and while I'm loving it, I really know myself and know that once I've gotten through the main quests and epilogue stuff, I'm quite likely going to have a hard time wanting to go through a lot of the leveling up and machinations ever again.
Yeah, i'm usually the same way. Getting bored with the early, mundane tasks on the 2nd run through. But i've stayed almost completely away from using magic this time and focused solely on two handed smashing. I think (hope) the game will be vastly different next time. I plan on holing up in a different city, going after diff perks, using level ups on magic, following the other quest lines, and basically trying to play the game in an entirely new way

I think the perk system has really given people the interest to do replays since you can't really master everything with one go of it.
No doubt. I am having a hell of a time trying to turn Big Gay Orc into a mage. It would have been easier if he started off as a One-Handed/Shield Blocking warrior because then I could just forgo the shield and use magic. But no. He's a Two-Handed lunatic, so if I use magic, I turn a level 35 guy into an absolute weakling and get owned by everything out there. I'm thinking of giving up and playing a straight mage.

The power shot perk has been a game changer for my sneaky archer. Trying to keep battles at range is always the goal, but previously I'd been sniping for a first shot, and praying once it gets to melee range. With that perk life in melee range is a whole lot easier. Cave bear staggers, I back up while re-drawing another arrow, just as its about to attack again I hit it again, repeat...

I added Faendal as a follower, and the two of us work pretty well together. He's smart enough to not stand right next to me, so we can easily flank enemies and force them to turn in order to hit both of us. We had a dragon battle on the 7,000 steps last night and we stayed 90 degrees apart from each other without really trying and kept the dragon staggered while it was on the ground so it had a tough time hitting either of us. pretty big fan of that guy.

I ended up with Faendal EARLY in the game, after doing the mini quest for him when we first meet. I had no idea followers existed until he asked if I wanted a tag along. As I progressed I bounced him b/c he's not that powerful, but I agree that of all the people I've had, I thought his was the most complementary. Most followers are such brawlers that they get in your way, particularly if you use shouts. I killed Lydia a dozen times early on using my shouts to fight dragons, because she's ALWAYS in the thick of the battle.

I like the Quick shot even more than the power shot. Has made life sooo much easier as a sneak archer.

You can go to Active Effects under the magic menu and it'll tell you if you have a disease and what it does. The lady at the potion shop always tells me I look sick, whether I am or not. I don't know if it's a bug or if she just want to sell me the damn potion.

If you go in to the magic menu and View Active Effects, you can see exactly what disease you have and what it's effects are. As has already been said, activating any shrine will take care of it. The one in Whiterun is available to everyone I imagine, even low level characters. So just go and click the little statue and you'll be good to go. Carry a cure disease potion or two with you and you won't have to worry about getting anything mid-quest.

Yet another thing I meant to bring up here but forgot.A couple of times I have been attacked by a trio of Thalmor. The last time it had happened, I realized I'd used a Shrine of Talos not long before it, the one in Whiterun. And then thinking back, I thought I could recall having used other Shrines of Talos prior to the other times the Thalmor attacked me. Makes sense since they are trying to stop worship of Talos.

Maybe someone else can use it and then see if some Thalmor track you down a few days later?

Ditto. Which turns out to be helpful in one of the MQs, or at least apparently avoids a bug.The only thing that I'm getting behind at this point is the extermination of the Falmer. In a world full of people who suck, they take the cake for being the most cruel and twisted.
There are several questlines I've decided to just leave for round two. Joining one side or the other is one of them. Dark Brotherhood is another. I have spent so much time doing the Mage Guild and Thieve's Guild questlines that I am sort of getting burned out, which is why I decided to leave these all for another run through. I'm already level 48 doing just those quest lines that I have. I see no need to power up anymore. And to be honest, I may not even finish the Thieve's Guild just because I don't want to give up the quest item I have in my possesion. I've also avoided any Markath or Solitude questlines for the same reason. All these things SHOULD keep round two more refreshing along with using a completely different character build (I will make the Steed Stone my b*tch in round two).

Interesting!I too was attacked randomly by some Thalmor guys (who teleported (or uncloaked from invisibility) and attacked me. When I killed them they had a letter from the Thalmor head saying I was to be taken care of for crimes against them. What baffled me is that I had just done the dude a FAVOR in Markarth, and had no bounties against me. So I just figured it was a glitch. But I've since not used the Talos shrine again, and haven't seen any more of those guys since.

I think you're onto something Greg.

Just went through the absolute most challenging thing last night, but it was so fun when I finished it. I had a quest when I had to go to the Thalmor (sp?) Embassy and I couldnt take any of my gear with me. I was supposed to give what I wanted to an NPC named Malborn and he would sneak it in for me. I was so paranoid about losing my Daedric Armor and bow that I didnt give him anything. When I got inside I had nothing to do the quest with. I thought about reloading, but all of the autosave points were after I gave him the gear and my last save before that was way too far back. So I proceeded to pickpocket a dagger from one of the guards, then I snuck up on him and cut his throat. Snuck up on another guard and killed him. Then I went outside and it got interesting. In the courtyard there are 2 mages and 2 soldiers. I was able to sneak up on one soldier and kill him and get his bow. After that it was a series of running and sniping for about 20 minutes while hiding and healing. All in all the quest took about an hour and a half or so and I died about 40 times. But when I ended up finishing it all I felt great.

And I really appreciated getting my gear back.

It took me several attemps to clear out that courtyard with limited gear. Good quest.
All you had to do was give your gear to the guy (Malborn) to smuggle it in. Before you got out and started slaying you could pick up all your equipment in a chest in the kitchen pantry.I was rocking full Orcish armor (at the time) and a 2H Greatsword w/ bow when I was on my way out.Needless to say
I dominated that quest.

Yeah, once you've been through it you know that but like SCBF I was nervous that we'd get a plot twist that would make you lose your stuff so I only gave him some very basic crappy stuff.

I did the same thing, I only took a dagger with me. Running for my life for so long was probably the hardest part of the game for me.

Do people not save regularly in order to up the excitement factor? It seems that in lots of Skyrim discussions I come across people who say something happened in a way they didn't intend, but didn't want to go all the way back to their last save point and redo things. Unlike most games I've played over the years, Skyrim lets you save your game anytime you want, so I save a TON. Makes any mistake like the Thieves Guild debacle easily fixable.

The Skeleton Key, an unbreakable lockpick. Not a game breaker or anything. But after picking so many locks, it really isn't anything "fun" for me at this point. With the skeleton key, I don't have to swap in to my lock-picking attire, and then spend time finiseing the lock. I can just go in and crank on it until it works. It's just a time/hassle saver for me. I'll probably turn it in once my lockpick hits 100% or I finish the main quest, in which case I'll want to wrap it up just to see what happens.

I do. For one thing, my game is starting to freeze way more often than it was early on. Though I no longer die much, there is nothing more aggravating than repeating 20 or 30 minutes of a Dwarven duungeon crawl because my game froze up and I don't have a current save. So now I save quite often.

I haven't turned it in yet either. Don't know why... a master takes me 5 picks at most. I guess I'm just lazy and it's easier to just rape the button while i move the mouse until it works.

Unlike most games I've played over the years, Skyrim lets you save your game anytime you want, so I save a TON. Makes any mistake like the Thieves Guild debacle easily fixable.
I do. For one thing, my game is starting to freeze way more often than it was early on. Though I no longer die much, there is nothing more aggravating than repeating 20 or 30 minutes of a Dwarven duungeon crawl because my game froze up and I don't have a current save. So now I save quite often.
I save a ton because even replaying one little area bores me to death. If I lose more than 10 minutes from dying I would rather shut it off for a different day then play through it again.

Actually, you are probably closer to the truth than what I posted. I tend to rant quite a bit when a freeze happens and I have forgotten to save for awhile. Maybe early on I wouldn't have minded as much. But after this much time, doing crap twice just doesn't become me.

Oh, ENCHANTING question. I was wondering about this as I close in on 100% and the ability to add the perk aloowing a 2nd enchantment. Can you add the SAME enchantment twice and, if so, does it stack? Reason I am asking, I make amulets and rings (along with bracers and I believe helmets) that augment my archery. So, I was thinking, can I make gauntlets and enchant them with say 30% to archery and then, as a 2nd enchantment, add another 30% to archery for a total of 60%?

They do not stack, unfortunately.

Curses. Foiled again. So now the question is, what to add to things enchanted with archery? I guess flame and frost resistance to make it a total dragon hunting ensemble. Or perhaps some sneaking, though I'm not sure there's much point after 100%. I can pretty much follow a guard around town, have them turn around and face me, and still remain hidden. Then again, dragons always see me after the first shot. Maybe I can remain hidden a bit more from them? Decisions, decisions.

Dunno, I haven't gotten that far yet. But as an archer (primarily), I would probably opt for soul trap.

Another great follower for the sniper build is Marcurio the Destruction mage. He's a mercenary for hire in Riften.

He'll stay back like Faenadal does, except he tosses deadly lightning bolts instead of weak arrows.
:goodposting: I paid this cat 500 gold about 8 levels ago and he's saved my ### a number of times. Big fan, I'm going to keep him around until he gets sick of carrying my crap.
He's an apprentice wizard, not a pack mule!
save before aiding other characters with him though, his electricity will sometimes accidentally shock them and you'll have a bigger fight on your hands than you started with, prob cost you a quest too. If I'm aiding other characters I sometimes tell him to wait far away where he won't get involved.

That's already on a bow itself. I have a damage bow and a soul trap bow.
Then just toss on shock, frost or fire and up the damage. My bow only does 187 damage and I pretty much one shot kill everything. Some take 2, but not many. Alduin only took about 7 or 8 shots. So I'm not sure you really need to concentrate and making your bow damage that much higher.

I think he was talking about adding dual enchantments to bracers, ring, necklace and helm... I think those are the only 4 items you can enchant with +archery% right?
