General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

One soul per gem. If they aren't filling them completely then you only have gems to big for them. For example if you are getting petty souls but have no petty gems they will fill the smallest gem you do have, no matter how large a soul that gem would normally carry.
Do you know if you kill an enemy with a really large soul, will it waste it on your smallest gem (that is too small for it) or would it go to the larger one that would fit it. I left all my small gems at home because I thought it might do that.
No big souls won't go into small soul gems. In other words if you have a petty gem but try to trap a grand soul it won't go into the petty gem.
But you can waste a grand soul gem on a petty soul
And that is where the "drop the soul gem and pick it back up to empty it" trick is VERY useful. This is a trick I wish I had known early in the game. Waste a bunch of valuable (at that time) common soul gems that could have been reused.

"I'd be a lot warmer and a lot happier with a belly full of mead." (maybe change "mead" to something else, given the age of the kids). There's probably a few kids in class that need to work on their "Speechcraft" skills - should be some shtick opportunities.

Ok Mega Masters of Enchanting, last question. For you dual enchanters, planning my bow design, what TWO enchantments do you put on a bow? I was thinking Shock first (as I like the dual shock and magick damage it provides). Secondly though, I'm a little conflicted. Frost damage maybe, hoping to get some freeze action? Fire for it's continuous damage? How about Paralyze, which may allow multiple attacks on a paralyzed opponent? What have you found to be most effective?

I was reading something last night and it made me realize something...you have to be careful when you're just wandering around and randomly discovering/fighting areas. I am in the midst of doing the Companions Quest, and something I read indicated that I guess if you had gone to wherever they randomly assign the Silver Hand leader beforehand and slain him (and it's a random thing so you could've done it without knowing), then you can't complete that quest, which means you can't complete the Companions Quest line.

This didn't happen to me, luckily, but I have slain TONS of other encampments, towers, redoubts, etc...with no quest associated with it. Has me wondering if it's going to keep me from completing big chunks of the other Quest lines.

If I find I sniped a named character, I will usually reload. Also, I sniped what I thought was just an enemy mage once and got an immediate indictaor that I had failed a quest. I hadn't received this actual quest, so I assume the game was just telling me this had been a quest character and I shouldn't have done that. So I think they ATTEMPTED to cover this in the game. But as we know, there are numerous glitches, so I doubt you can ever be too safe.

this is also a problem when your exploring these places with sneak because it won't alert you if someone is an enemy until they are triggered of your presence, or if you already clocked them upside the head for double damage  I took out some lady the other day, when i searched the body I found some ring with a name on it, thought oh this can't be good....

One thing you can do is cast detect life before attacking. Enemies and friendlies are shown in different colors.

OK...I have been buying up all kinds of empty souls, shooting everything I can with the soul trapped bow and disenchanting everything I can....and I have a couple of questions. I'm sure they've been addressed but I can't locate them.1. I'm noticing that when I go to enchant some armor that the armor rating is plummeting, is there something I'm missing?2. Whenever I kill a human it says I dont have a soul gem big enough...I vaguely remember someone here saying I needed a specific gem but I bought every kind there was and it still said that. What gem is needed for human souls? On a side note...I did the Mehrunes' Razor quest yesterday while the kids were napping...lots of fun that one was and a pain in the ### to find!
Can anyone lend a hand with #1?

as in you select it, the enchantment and the gem and the rating is lower than it started? Haven't seen that one yet

You xbox'ers load to your hard drive and play from there? This is the first thing I did, but I'm wondering if playing one way or the other is more buggy?

I don't have a hard drive. The only problem that seems to present is slower loads when you go through entrances/exits and occasional slow loading landscape. I have been told getting a hard drive would help with both.

When are you seeing this? During the enchanting process? I'm guessing not as I have never noticed it showing the rating during the enchanting process, only the enchantment affect. If it is, I wouldn't worry about it as it ls likely just a display bug or something, maybe showing the armor's raw, unupgraded value or something while enchanting. If you are saying something has an armor value of 84, then you enchant it and it dropped to 60, then I definitely think that is a bug. Obviously that shouldn't happen. One other thought. Are you looking at your TOTAL armor value? If so, maybe it drops because, as you are enchanting, the armor becomes "unequiped," so the armor value of the piece itself is being taken out of the total value. But that's just a guess. If you can describe exactly what is happening in a bit more detail, we might be able to figure it out.

No. For instance I have Steel Plated Armor that is Epic and has an armor rating of 86 (I think)....if I go to enchant it with something like Fire Resistance the armor rating drops to like 65 or something. ETA-- It is during the enchanting process. I may have to save it and see if it's what TxBuckeye mentioned about being a bug

I think the load times are pretty slow using the HD as well. The system is much quieter though, but that's true in some fashion for any game played from the HD.

If I'm hearing him correctly - The armor number (and any other enchantment number) will change depending upon what size soul gem you use, what your enchantment rating is, etc. It sounds like BigBoy is saying that when he goes to enchant something he sees the armor rating is at "X", but then when he picks the actual soul gem the rating drops to "Y", a much lower number. Try picking a bigger soul gem and you should see the number rise - for example, using a petty soul gem might mean a 6% fire resistance but using a greater soul gem would be 12%, grand soul gem would be 24%, etc.

If not, oh well - I took an arrow to the knee and haven't been right since.

From the Xbox Live main menu...find the game and there is an option to load the game to your hard drive. You need a certain Gig of space, depends on the game. I usually only have one loaded at a time (the game I'm currently playing the most) since it does eat up alot of memory. I think I did have 2 loaded for a short period of time.

Wow, my wild *** guess wasn't to far off as far as armor values go! But yes, I think it likely just displays the original forged value of the armor on that screen for whatever reason. Save, enchant the armor, and then go to the apparel screen and see what it really shows. Odds are, it will still be 86 when you do.

So for alchemy, in order to create any potion that uses a certain ingredient I have to know at least one effect from that ingredient? I was going to take a suggestion upthread to make an invisibility potion in order to help me out in a certain area but when I went to do it I couldn't use any of the ingredients in the potion...Instead I went through my inventory eating all the stuff I didn't know any effects of. Mmmm, Troll Fat.
You don't have to know any effects to make a potion or use an ingredient. When making a potion, at the top of the effects list is an option to view all ingredients. You can select any two ingredients from there, and even if you don't know any effects for either, if they both have the same effect it'll make a potion and then that effect will be known for both ingredients.

are you saying the actual armor rating? or the initial enchantment rating you are applying to the armor, which could drop depending on the gem size you select. I have not gone back and checked the actual armor rating after an enchantment, it should not be doing that.

I have really just stuck to magic so far. But in past Elder Scrolls games, I would have went with Paralyze and a damage effect. Even 1s of Paralysis is enough for you to hit someone one or two more times, and that will do more damage than a 2nd damage effect would. If you want to go with 2 damage effects though, I'd probably go with fire (for the extra burning) plus ice (to knock down their stamina and make them move slower). They also are the first two perks, so you can use those and not have to spend a perk on the shock enchantment for weapons.

I haven't ever noticed this myself. I'd save and enchant the item, then check it in your inventory. It could be that it isn't accounting for your perks or something when displaying in the Enchanting menu. The other thing to check is maybe you need to go Smith it again after the Enchantment. It shouldn't need it, but as a programmer I could see a developer messing up and using the stats of the base object you're enchanting instead of keeping the stats of the actual object. Easy kind of mistake to make.

I find the same thing. If I put an enchantment on armor that I've upgraded, the armor rating will revert back to the original rating (non upgraded). So I always make sure to enchant first and then upgrade afterwards. I didn't realize this was not supposed to happen.

I haven't selected any of those. I actually stayed away from the middle of the perk tree and went up the sides. I didn't even think about how that would effect the enchantments. Dang, now is my OCD going to kick in and make me chase two more upgrades so I can get those?

Magic 8 Ball says very likely

If you enchant improved armor, it will appear to lose any improved rating you may have applied through smithing (the UI will show it revert to it's base specs). However, after enchanting the item - the item will in fact retain any improved rating (UI bug?).
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Enchanting
This honestly makes a lot of sense when you consider you can't even smith enchanted armor without a perk. I've never honestly noticed the drop though. That may be because I just didn't pay attention and have often reworked my armor after various level-ups. So maybe it dropped, I smithed it up again, and therefore just blew past the bug without noticing. Is this a platform specific bug? Or is it for every system?

I'd hang on to that 8-ball. I'm guessing it's fairly accurate. Damn, I'm NEVER going to get back to the main quest. Time to load that two handed battleaxe back up and head back to Draughrville.

Can you be more specific? If you load the game to the HD you still have to have the disc in the drive to play. The system doesn't copy everything to the HD.

Just asking if I will lose my current save file if I copy the game to the HD. I know you need to disc to start the game, but it then runs off the HD. I would think I would be ok, but was hoping for confirmation before I do this.

If you are nervous you can dump to a USB stick for backup first. I seriously don't think it will be an issue.

"You need to clean up your mess. Because unlike Lydia, I am NOT sworn to carry your burdens."
This is good.I forgot to mention that the first time she tried this was a Fus-Ro-Dah shout. They were all messing around not listening, so she stood up and shouted, "FUS-RO-DAH!"

They all :o

Then :lmao: and paid attention.

Never underestimate the power of a good shout.
"I am a high school teacher, not a pack mule"...Not sure how you'd work that in

Exit dungeon.....

"Hey look a cave, I wonder what's inside"

*****, we were just in there and killed everything!

"I got to thinking... maybe I'm the dragonborn and I just dont know it yet."

A couple random thoughts after a short session:

- NCCommish was dead on about that eight ball. Sure enough, couldn't let it go. Loaded up the 2 handed axe and cleared a dungeon. Then went to Riften and bought the Muffle spell. So now I am two handed slashing my way through Skyrim, casting Muffle every time I have enough magic to do so, until I level up and get those two perks. Shouldn't take long. With the higher level enemies my two hand is skyrocketing. And the ludicrous advancement in Illusion using Muffle, it's going pretty quickly.

- Jason, the dungeon I did had a door. It was a crypt that I could not open. So I am guessing this is another way they keep you from screwing up a quest. Obviously, once the proper quest is triggered, that door will open. But for now, it was a dead end for that cave system.

- Those little details that make this game special. Traveling to a quest location, house in the woods which is supposedly full of bad men. On the way, I run in to one of those bridges over the road manned by bandits. Snipe one, then load up the two handed axe to go get the other. he is moving away from me as that is the way the ramp faces. I get to the ramp and can't find him. Dragon appears and I get sidetracked like a 5 year old with a new toy (oooh, sparkly). Can't catch the dragon, so head back on the quest. I can see the bridge, still no bandit.. Where'd he go? Well, I get to the quest house which is nearby, and that bandit is there, dead! So basically, he stumbled on my house full of bad men and, the bad men being bad, killed him! I love it. I was nowhere near the cabin when it happened, but the dynamic game engine did what should realistically should have happened, had the bad guys whack the bandit that wandered in to their territory!

Mercurio and I finally ran into a double dragon encounter, got all juiced up for a tough battle and started slinging stamina arrow at them, but for some reason they were attacking something else. so I hop over the ridge to see whats going on and I notice 4 deer, a few wolves, 3 bears, a giant, a troll and even a fox had come from the wood works to aide my battle, so of course I'm stoked to get in on the dragon beat down with my new friends. We spend the next 10 mins or so just pounding on these two dragons, giving high fives, but when the last dragon fell I get bum rushed by my new found buddies....no loyalty for the experience we just went through together, I tell ya!! This was actually more intimidating than the two dragons because I thought we were boys. :lmao:

thinking about starting a new character under nethack rules (you die you start over, and no loading previous saves to fix the bad/crazy thing that happened)
Like, start over a new character if you die? You can die pretty stupidly in this game.
exactly, that's pretty much how nethack worked, you restart a lot, I've played a couple of characters up to around level 40 (i kept playing when i died) seems like the hardest stretch was level 10-20 and then smooth sailing somewhere above 30.

started a new mage yesterday, we'll see how it goes
eff, trolls, dragons, giants, no problem, bandit chief corners me and i'm dead in 2 hits, level 7
