I assume you have an NG tube MT, if this gets irritating, use ice chips as much as you can and remember that that hateful tube will be pulled soon enough.

Serious statement time, guys...

For all of us here, if you're in the 50 year old range and haven't had a colonoscopy or have a family history of it, let this be a wake-up call to git 'r done.

 
Since things have gone so well, and I am pleased that they did, can we maybe get a post or two about hot nurses providing sponge baths.  They say that morale, a positive mental attitude, is a key to recovery, and few things can create as positive an outlook on life as hot nurses giving sponge baths.

Oh, if you have a male nurse you can keep the sponge bath stories to yourself as far as I am concerned, though perhaps others would care to hear the tale.

I don't know what an NG tube is, but I have a catheter story for you. Pee is supposed to go through the catheter into a bag. My first night with it, there was a kink in the tube. So instead of going into the bag, it backed up and came out of my weener (which hurt) and went all over my bed. Since I had no experience with it, I didn't know that anything was wrong. I just thought, "Man, catheters are stupid."

You'd know if you had an NG tube, it's a tube down your nose into your stomach sucking everything out of your stomach so nothing gets to your bowles.  I'd assume that if you had your bowels resected, you'd have one in.  Once they pull the catheter, which won't be fun but won't be terrible either, make sure you pee as soon and as much as possible.  For me, they had to put the catheter back in because I didn't pee enough.  You Do Not Want This.

I've been hesitating to update without more concrete info. Here's what I know right now. The surgery went great, I am recovering from it, and I should be released from the hospital within the next few days. The cancer mass was removed, but it was at a fairly late stage (T4) and it's unclear to what extent it has spread. It spread to lymph nodes (not sure how many or where, or what lymph nodes even are, really), but not sure about other organs. I may not know for a while. I think the plan is to go home and heal for a while before going to an oncologist and getting a full-body PET scan. I'm mentally prepared for whatever comes next.

I'm a firm believer that attitude plays an important role in how well we recover and heal.  Sounds like you have that part of your recovery locked down.  Keep up the great spirits MT, and kick this things ###!

 
We appreciate the update - maybe this goes without saying but just in case - please don't feel as if you owe us anything in terms of updates - if you aren't up to share for whatever reason don't feel pressure to do so. Though we are grateful to know how things are going when you can and want to share. 

We are all here in your corner rooting for you MT!

 
Keep up that fighter attitude MT.   Your strength mentally will do nothing but improve your fight physically. Kick this thing in that a** man!!!  If you ever have a day where you feel like you are exhausted mentally--use this thread as a tool to remind you of how many people are pulling, praying, and supporting you.   Best wishes and positive vibes your way!!!

Once you get a treatment plan in place, it actually gets easier to handle. The lymphatic system is the other circulatory system except all it does is remove wastes/debris from cells. So it's another way cancer cells can escape and travel, and that's when chemo and rads become necessary.

All I can say is we are all pulling for you. There is a mountain of good karma you've built up over the years. Here's hoping you can cash that in. There is probably no one more respected around here. 

I'm glad to hear the surgery went so well. You're a strong rational guy. I know you'll handle this as well as you do anything else. You deserve many more decades of enlightening the world with your thoughtfulness and intelligence.

I was almost ready to write something, giving a WebMD style overview on metastatic cancer and lymph node involvement. Then I realized it was you, and that I will most likely be posting here asking for your take on technical medical questions inside a week. As someone who has dealt with an inordinate amount of cancer over the last several years, I'll say three things:

1. #### cancer.

2. No human being come with an expiration date. My wife was given 6 months to live. Seven years ago. She is still doing well and you'd never even know she had been fighting it for 7 years, if you met her.

3. A positive mental attitude is crucial, like most things in life.

MT:. So glad to hear that you're dealing with this well mentally. I know you wouldn't say it if it weren't true. Rest and heal and enjoy some down time before the next round. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
