Well, being a Gen X'er, I don't believe in participation trophy's anyway.

Stop this nonsense. I'm 49, and we all received trophies in every sport we played growing up.
Really? Im trying to think of one that I got growing up. The only thing I can remember is we got certificates saying we participated in a certain sport.....not the same as a trophy.....I mean i get that the participation trophy thing probly started in our generation, but I don't remember it so much out in the sticks of Eastern Oregon....course we were probly 10 years behind anyway.

An aside, my son's youth football team went undefeated this season.....they had some really close ones too. they didn't just blow teams out. The coaches got the kids trophies that said undefeated, 8-0. They also said they didn't believe in participation trophies. They also took time to say something about each kid during the trophy presentation at they pizza party. It was pretty cool.

Mrs. Eephus still has an old bowling trophy she got in school. I didn't know her then but I've seen her bowl since and there's no way she won it based on talent.

New-to-me favorite today was...surprise, surprise, the Mumford & Sons song! I think I've put every single one of these on my playlist. Perhaps I should finally dig into the band.

Jesus, we listened to these guys from our deck when they played the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, and I made a mental note to check into more of their music. I just looked it up, and that was in 2011. I'm a little behind on my musical to-do list. :bag:

Fantastic list today.

These are my favorites of those known to me that I haven't already extolled.

New-to-me favorites from #19:

Catch the Sun -- Doves (Shuke). A-plus melody, especially on the chorus, mixing the best aspects of power pop and alt-rock. Reminds me of some of the best material of Teenage Fanclub and Sloan. This is now my highest-ranking new-to-me song.

I posted too soon. :hifive:
I'm a huge Doves fan. Nice pick shuke.

Pip, you should give their entire catalog a listen. I think they're in your wheelhouse.

Putting on their first album now (the one with Catch the Sun on it).

I forgot to list "10538 Overture" as a new to me favorite. I know a lot of ELO's songs, but I'm not familiar with their very early albums. Eldorado is when I got to know them.

The descending guitar line in the intro for 10538 sounded awfully familiar but I just couldn't place it. It took me a few blocks of walking before I remembered one of Mrs. E's picks "Changingman" by Paul Weller used it as well.

I googled it when I got home and it turns out Weller's producer looped the ELO song. Lynne supposedly considered legal action but doesn't have a writer's credit to this day.

Fortunately she doesn't read the thread. ditkaburgers has checked in now and again but she's seen her mom bowling skills as well.

TIL that After the Fire was a group of old 70s Christian Proggers and that their version of Der Kommissar was a bigger hit in the US than it was in their native land. Put me down for preferring the German version but the hook works in any language.

It helped that it got regular play on MTV (as did Falco's version).

That's my favorite one. Enjoy!

No doubt. After the Fire's version peaked at #5 on the US charts during the last week of April 1983. Beat It, Dexy's, Greg Kihn's Jeopardy and Mr. Roboto made up the rest of the top five. Billie Jean was on its way down at #7.

i'm 64, and I have never received a participation trophy. I played a lot of baseball, football, basketball and golf.

It was 1st place for any kind of trophy that you'd want to really "show" and occasionally 2nd or mayyyyyyybe 3rd place.

no win ...no soup for you.

I do remember kids that were in swimming at the local pool - got a ton of crappy ribbons though. I didn't hang out at the pool - I am basically albino that happened to received the gift of colored hair and eyebrows.

I'm 63. No participation BS. The ****ing Boy Scouts handed out ribbons for a lot of ****.

My top 10 from the 13 point round, excluding my own selection:
  1. @rockaction : Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
  2. @Yankee23Fan : While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles
  3. @falguy : Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
  4. @DrIanMalcolm : In God's Country - U2
  5. @Zegras11 : Rock And Roll - Led Zeppelin
  6. @Andy Dufresne : Pictures Of You - The Cure
  7. @Westerberg : Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis
  8. @The Dreaded Marco : Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve
  9. @higgins : Abacab - Genesis
  10. @Chaz McNulty : I Melt With You - Modern English
For my taste, this was the best round yet, by a large margin. Wow.

As for Rock and Roll, I didn't rank it in my top 25 in the Zep countdown, but I still think it is a great song. But IMO Zep probably has the strongest song for song catalog of any artist I am aware of. They have a lot of truly great songs that didn't make my top 25 list.

I’m trying not to shine too much more light on the Big 3 in my selections. Which was rough today, as Dead Flowers and She’s a Rainbow could’ve both got mentions. Just assume <3 for certain groups. Speaking of such things, tomorrow my last unmentioned artist shows up!

#19s
Recognized by title alone: 30
Sounded familiar: 4
Knew from this countdown:
Didn't know: 10

Special Shout Out: Fools Gold (Pip’s Invitation). I spent several minutes of this song thinking “I’ve heard this somewhere”. Which, it turns out, is in The World’s End. So familiar enough, but not instantly linked. I think the message here is that I need to watch The Cornetto Trilogy more often.

Selected Favorites:
Love Will Tear Us Apart (Don Quixote)
Pictures of You (Andy Dufrense)
30 Days in The Hole (MisterCIA)
Your Love (Hov34)
Would I Lie to You? (Val Rannous)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
I Will Wait (Hawks64)
Freelance Friend (KarmaPolice)
Cherry Red (OliverHumanzee) - It was this or Midnight Blue (not eligible). I didn’t choose this completely to make this joke, but it didn’t hurt that I could.
How We Operate (krista4)

Two Deja Votes tomorrow! Both are songs we've already seen, though.

In addition, one of our Big 3 has a triple-up, and one has a double-up, but the third artist is completely shut out tomorrow. Maybe they won't make the top three! :excited:

We have three other double-ups, including a battle between me and a poster who probably wouldn't expect to double-up with me.

Riddle: Take one of our double-up artists, with a name consisting of two words, and replace one letter of the second word to get a song that is one of tomorrow's selections.

Two songs tomorrow will come from solo artists better known for being in non-Big-3 bands, one of which was not eligible for this draft.

There's a song title hidden in this post as well.

And if it's Sunday, that must mean we'll have more Dusty and Verve.
