Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

Oh, also meant to mention that I had overlooked rock's pick of "Ready Steady Go" in my already-known-and-love list.

Annnnnnnd, I just tried to tag rock and he doesn't even show up as a member anymore. This is not good.
He posted in here yesterday around 6pm

I think now I'm determined to start all of these countdowns with a fun pop song, so after What a Fool Believes, I had to go with Magic for this one.

I hadn't thought about the song a lot until ONJ died just recently, but boy, is that song a banger.
To combat people switching off songs (basically listening to 49 seconds of each song before some one remembers a song they really want to hear) at out draft, I came up with a playlist concept. Everyone showing up live gives me one band (each year) and I make a playlist with those 12-14 bands with about 8
songs of each band in “rounds” we also have an “in memorial” slot featuring whichever artist died most recently before our draft. This year it was Olivia Newton John (ZZ Top the year before) - and it was a nice addition to the mix including the Grease soundtrack (we’re that age) was fun. She had a great career.
Oh, and all four other “idiots” are in this fantasy football league with a live in-person draft for the last 25 years, as well.

Still might get Schmidt-canned, so I'll apologize in advance for any absence.

It appears the above took place.

Maybe with the new board software, suspended/banned posters can't be atted?
What did I miss?

Start here, and skim through to the end of pg 37. Maybe 30 posts of slap-fighting.

Mod checks in at the top of page 38. Thought mod was going to go light, but no. Rock's adversary copped to telling the teacher.

...

There's some kids on this board you gotta watch. Just because TPF is gone doesn't mean there's not some baiters out there.

Huh - He’s in a league with me. Just sent him an email.

Ah, a Packer fan was involved, so....

Straight to No. 1 by Touch and Go was new to me and really liked it. It was fresh but classic at the same time.

Well Mrs R chose a more musical "mix" which doesn't have my raunchy sax. This version is the original and on my playlist...

What the #### did I just read?

Sorry, it's a rock conversation.....

Query, as I succumbed to the clicking of the bait and read with great anticipation I found myself reviewing the musings of an effort to overinflate the value of a particular receiver who sets wide and find myself wondering, on a truly metaphysical level, what, in fact, did I just peruse?

Pip’s Invitation:

Nine Feet Underground - Caravan

This is the song I mentioned earlier that I had never heard of until @KarmaPolice selected it for the prog playlist in GP4. I had heard of Caravan and prog's Canterbury Scene but had never actually heard them until that moment. And I was blown away by this song, which takes up all of side 2 of their third album, In the Land of Grey and Pink. The instrumental passages, driven by David Sinclair's organ and Synclavier playing, are thrilling, and the whole thing builds up to a triumphant, urgent conclusion. One thing that strikes me about it is while much of British prog is a fusion of classical and rock, this song (and some of the other work of Caravan and their Canterbury Scene mates) adds jazz to the mix in spectacular fashion. Soon after I heard this, I reached out to my high school buddy who owns a record store to tell him that I thought it was the equal of another side-long prog song that we have stanned since our high school years. He agreed.

This will not be my last long song, but there will be none longer than this one's 22:43.
Awesome, glad you loved it. This was not the pick I was guessing, and honestly forgot about this song and band when I was compiling my list. So I guess I am to blame for killing today's playlist for people? ;)

My guess when you made that post was a song from one of the artists I have at 13pts and 24pts.

;)

FWIW, here are my guesses for the prospective one-hit wonders that will for sure have multiple songs selected:

Son Of A Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield
A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procol Harum
Time Of The Season - The Zombies
Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears for Fears
Freedom '90 - George Michael
You Got Another Thing Coming - Judas Priest

@Pip's Invitation , I gave your song my requisite three minutes, which I do even if I hate a song from the beginning. I didn't hate this one at all, but skipped ahead a bit to hear more of it and then concluded it just wasn't going to be for me.

Since then:
"Rabbit" - sounds like a Ringo song is right! Are we sure Ringo isn't associated with this in any way? I mean this all as a compliment and really liked the song.
"God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" - I saw Coldplay for free back when people gave me free things all the time. Wasn't at all interested in them but was pleasantly surprised at how well their show rocked. I should have listened to more from them. This song was outstanding.
"Oh! Camil" - my favorite so far. I see the comparisons to Dylan, but it sounds more to me like if an Englishman were trying to imitate Dylan who was trying to imitate an Englishman.

Hey look, this Yes song is only three minutes or so! I'll give it a shot.
Understood re the Caravan song. If you attempt it again, go to the 16-minute mark, for the next-to-last section, which is a melodic ballad, then the last section featuring the instrumental crescendo, which is the best part IMO.

I also found the Coldplay song better than expected. I liked it better than their famous songs with the possible exception of "Clocks."

Your description of Oh! Camil is perfect. There's another Nash song that's kind of in the same mold (Southbound Train, which is ineligible for this countdown because it's on a duo album with David Crosby) that comes with a Dylan anecdote. Just after the song was written, Crosby and Nash happened to be staying in the same hotel as Dylan. They were so excited about this song that they knocked on the door Dylan's room and asked if they could play it for him. He let them, and then asked them to play it again after they finished, which Nash said was one of the best compliments he'd ever received in his career.

The Politics forum is gone, they have to get it out somehow, and poor Gabe Davis is in the cross-hairs.

Ironically, I don't think Rock's sparring partner was a TPF regular. Was he? I could've easily missed it. Really have clear recall of his Shark Pool contributions -- actually a knowledgeable guy, but prone to slap-fights.

I'll tell you that at least one of these songs is indeed the only song selected by that artist. And at least one of these songs was not selected at all.

Now, if you're looking at the consensus picks above and saying to yourself, "Damn, I really messed up," please take heart.

At the time that I posted the contest, so around halfway through, I made a note of what the correct answers were at that moment. The only two for which I did not do this were questions #1 and #2, because I didn't feel like calculating that only to have to do it again later.

Of the 13 questions for which I did note the answer, can you guess how many consensus answers matched up correctly?

Well, I won't ask you to do that, because you guys suck at guessing. It was three. Three of 13 correct.

I do know that some shifts occurred thereafter that could lead to a better performance by the consensus picks, though I haven't gone through to match up the final correct answers yet.
