#31 worth a single point.

Well since it seems @krista4's reveal has been released (and I'm on my way out), as promised I will list "my idiots" (from the original thread) corresponding song choices each day:

My Idiots #31

Scooter

Oliver’s Army – Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Doug
Son of a Preacher Man – Dusty Springfield

Jeb
Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying – Gerry & The Pacemakers

Chap
The Night – The Moody Blues
Do we want to toss these on the playlist every day? I would lean yes but figure the group should make the call.

Even though I'm just a bystander, I would say "yes". These are the folks that got this thing started.

Faves from this first grouping:

simey:
Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibb
jwb:
Cum On Feel The Noize – Slade
DrIanMalcolm:
Magic - Olivia Newton-John
KarmaPolice:
She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult
shuke:
Right Back Where We Started From - Maxine Nightingale
Sullie:
Connected - Stereo MC's
Mister CIA:
Pictures Of Matchstick Men – Status Quo
falguy:
Son Of A Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield

I kind of made an executive decision to leave Gibb and Newton-John off my list, mostly because I can't help thinking of them as Australian -- ground rules be damned. Still, having nonce personal reasons to eliminate artists gave me much-needed breathing room to spotlight some others.

Since I'm working on the artist rankings right now...guesses as to total number of artists in this countdown? For reference, in the US countdown we had 36 lists submitted with 526 different artists.
386

WINNER! We had a 21-way tie for 352nd place (one point), meaning we had 372 separate artists.

Oops. 371 rather than 372. There was an artist I missed who had a one-pointer and a two-pointer, and I had counted them separately.
Nigel AND the Kazoo Boys as opposed to Nigel WITH the Kazoo Boys.

My favourites from round #31. I liked a lot more than I thought I would and there are so many new to me bands.

@worrierking - All the Way From Memphis - Mott The Hoople
@Sullie - Connected - Stereo MC's
@Mister CIA - Pictures of Matchstick Men - Status Quo
@higgins - Only Time Will Tell - Asia - I really :poop: the bed forgetting about Asia. :kicksrock:
@simsarge - Be My Downfall - Del Amitri
@landrys hat - All Day and All of the Night - The Kinks
@falguy - Son of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield

Pip’s Invitation:

Nine Feet Underground - Caravan

This is the song I mentioned earlier that I had never heard of until @KarmaPolice selected it for the prog playlist in GP4. I had heard of Caravan and prog's Canterbury Scene but had never actually heard them until that moment. And I was blown away by this song, which takes up all of side 2 of their third album, In the Land of Grey and Pink. The instrumental passages, driven by David Sinclair's organ and Synclavier playing, are thrilling, and the whole thing builds up to a triumphant, urgent conclusion. One thing that strikes me about it is while much of British prog is a fusion of classical and rock, this song (and some of the other work of Caravan and their Canterbury Scene mates) adds jazz to the mix in spectacular fashion. Soon after I heard this, I reached out to my high school buddy who owns a record store to tell him that I thought it was the equal of another side-long prog song that we have stanned since our high school years. He agreed.

This will not be my last long song, but there will be none longer than this one's 22:43.

I like all of these except Bittersweet Symphony (sorry GBY23F). That sounds like what I'd imagine the Pit of Despair sounds like when it's really rocking out or if you whacked a bag full of cats with a rubber hose.

I have a half dozen versions of Ready Steady Go on my playlist and just listened to it again yesterday.

"Your own.... Personal... Pizza... With pepperoni and cheese... If you please..."

Cream seems obvious to me, which means it's probably wrong...

Correct. I mean, correct that you're wrong. The answer is George Harrison.

The highest-ranked female artist is at #21.

ELO wins over Oasis.

Now to the 1-pointers!

I guess I don't have to guess now but I was going to post this. ELO has a lot of good songs - I could easily see them having 5+ songs here. Probably won't get too many top 10's, but they should be well-represented.

I counted 17 songs/artists I'd never heard of in the opening round. There are several others I recognize the artist name, but don't know if I've ever heard the song. Looks like I'm gonna hear a lot of new music right away.

I don't expect a lot of you to be into Motorhead. Hell, I don't even listen to their music all that often. My selection was more of a nod to a pioneering, sneering, hard living, working class, rock and roll band. Lemmy Kilmister didn't give a ****. He was the epitome of the rock and roll lifestyle. Motorhead is now an institution. They're music, persona, and influence live on through countless other bands. I think Ace of Spades sums them up nicely. Its fast, aggressive, gritty.....it takes your woman, steals your bottle, and kicks your teeth in.

I don't think you'll be alone here. Great song and I love this version.

My list is mostly a snap shot of what I've been listening to a bunch recently. There a few tunes in there that I'm not listening to much at the moment (for whatever reason) but that I had to put on the list. There She Goes was one of them. It was one of the first songs I thought of for this thing and never left my list. A perfect song.

I’ve obviously heard of Graham Nash, but I was not familiar with this song. Kind of derivative of early Dylan but I did really like.
I discovered it some months back when I created an iTunes “radio station” from a CSN song I loved- “Helplessly Hoping”.

I have discovered a LOT of songs in recent years by doing this. The trick is to choose a song for the radio station that is NOT a hit- otherwise the computer will just generate other hits. But if the initial tune is more of a rarity, you will be sent to some stuff you probably aren’t familiar with.

They're not a band I listen to much but Ace of Spades is monstrous. Bonus points for being covered by Ween in their live sets occasionally.

The Ace Award goes to the artist who has the highest score but only one song selected. Guesses for the award were the tiebreaker question for the SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111.

Five votes:
Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve

Four votes:
Son Of A Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield

Two votes:
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
In The Summertime - Mungo Jerry

One vote:
She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby
Tell Laura I Love Her - Ricky Valance
A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procol Harum
Cruel To Be Kind - Nick Lowe
Song 2 - Blur (note this one has already been eliminated with the one-point selections)
Damaged Goods - Gang of Four
One Night In Bangkok - Murray Head
I Will Wait - Mumford and Sons
Time Of The Season - The Zombies
Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears for Fears
Wild Thing - Troggs
Bang A Gong (Get It On) - T. Rex
Freedom '90 - George Michael
You Got Another Thing Coming - Judas Priest
I still like my pick best for the ace, but surprised no one submitted Video Killed the Radio Star.

Today's known-to-me favorites:

Son of a Preacher Man -- Dusty Springfield (Falguy)
Bitter Sweet Symphony -- The Verve (Yankee23Fan)
Ace of Spades -- Motorhead (Manster)
Personal Jesus -- Depeche Mode (Binky)
Is She Really Going Out with Him? -- Joe Jackson (Hov34 and Krista4)
All Day and All of the Night -- The Kinks (Landryshat)
Connected -- Stereo MCs (Sullie)
I Wanna Be Adored -- The Stone Roses (Zamboni)
Long Distance Runaround -- Yes (Hawks64)
All the Way from Memphis -- Mott the Hoople (Worrierking)
Magic -- Olivia Newton-John (DrIanMalcolm)
She Sells Sanctuary -- The Cult (KarmaPolice)
Only Time Will Tell -- Asia (Higgins)
There She Goes -- The La's (Westerberg)
Pictures of Matchstick Men -- Status Quo (Mister CIA)

As others have said, a ton of songs in this round were new to me, so I have a lot to digest today. Makes sense given that slot 31 is the logical place to give a shoutout to a song/artist that you think might be unknown/underappreciated.

For us newbs, what means this?
This whole thing started when Doc Oc created a thread counting down the top 31 songs by US artists that his text chain of five middle-aged idiots came up with. The thread was very well-received and we decided to do our own US countdown. Now both us and them are doing a British Isles countdown.

Oh I see, this is what theoretical physicists refer to as the Many-Worlds Interpretation of muscial drafts.

Whoa! That is pretty cool! The b@stard child of Motorhead and BattleBots

I'm gonna have to check that version out......Having listened to the Deaner album, which I thought was pretty damn good, I feel like that's more his style?

titusbramble:

Rabbit – Chas & Dave

This is VERY British. I could see Ringo covering it.

simey:

Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibb

Bonus points for its use in a South Park episode. Gets surprisingly gritty at the end.

This is from Wild Tales, Nash's second solo album, and the first record issued since the formation of CSN(Y) by any of them that did not chart. It has some excellent material and some sappy stuff that was typical of Nash. I agree with Tim that this song is very Dylan-influenced.
Yankee23Fan:

Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve

One of the very best uses of strings in rock, copyright issues aside.
DrIanMalcolm:

Magic - Olivia Newton-John

The Xanadu soundtrack (half Olivia, half ELO) is fantastic. Really underappreciated. Tons of memorable songs on it.
Sullie:

Connected - Stereo MC's

I probably requested this at every wedding of a college friend. We were in college in the early '90s and it wasn't a great time for dance music, this being one of the exceptions. At one I was drunk and couldn't remember the name of the band (Sterophonics? Stereosonics? Stereotactic?) until the DJ figured out what I was trying to say.

Mister CIA:

Pictures Of Matchstick Men – Status Quo

I still think Spinal Tap is based largely on Status Quo, and this song is the model for Listen to the Flower People.

I only know their radio songs and this is my favorite of those. Also loved its video back in the day.

MAC_32:

Lights – Ellie Goulding

First instance in the proper countdown where I didn't recognize the title or artist but knew the song once I heard it.

Hov34 and krista4:

Is She Really Going Out With Him? – Joe Jackson

He has so many worthy songs and this is as good as any. I've always loved how he conveys confusion in his vocal on this one.

Oliver Humanzee:

Listen to the Sirens - Tubeway Army

Gary Numan before he was famous? Yep, this is on-brand for OH.
