I thought the Stereo MCs were Americans and were putting on their accents, like Spike on Buffy the Vampire SlayerYeah, the Maxine Nightingale thing messed me up when I saw her on shuke's list. And I only found out during the US countdown that The La's were English.

This is the song I mentioned earlier that I had never heard of until @KarmaPolice selected it for the prog playlist in GP4. I had heard of Caravan and prog's Canterbury Scene but had never actually heard them until that moment. And I was blown away by this song, which takes up all of side 2 of their third album, In the Land of Grey and Pink. The instrumental passages, driven by David Sinclair's organ and Synclavier playing, are thrilling, and the whole thing builds up to a triumphant, urgent conclusion. One thing that strikes me about it is while much of British prog is a fusion of classical and rock, this song (and some of the other work of Caravan and their Canterbury Scene mates) adds jazz to the mix in spectacular fashion. Soon after I heard this, I reached out to my high school buddy who owns a record store to tell him that I thought it was the equal of another side-long prog song that we have stanned since our high school years. He agreed.
This will not be my last long song, but there will be none longer than this one's 22:43.

I like all of these except Bittersweet Symphony (sorry GBY23F). That sounds like what I'd imagine the Pit of Despair sounds like when it's really rocking out or if you whacked a bag full of cats with a rubber hose.
I have a half dozen versions of Ready Steady Go on my playlist and just listened to it again yesterday.

I counted 17 songs/artists I'd never heard of in the opening round. There are several others I recognize the artist name, but don't know if I've ever heard the song. Looks like I'm gonna hear a lot of new music right away.
I don't expect a lot of you to be into Motorhead. Hell, I don't even listen to their music all that often. My selection was more of a nod to a pioneering, sneering, hard living, working class, rock and roll band. Lemmy Kilmister didn't give a ****. He was the epitome of the rock and roll lifestyle. Motorhead is now an institution. They're music, persona, and influence live on through countless other bands. I think Ace of Spades sums them up nicely. Its fast, aggressive, gritty.....it takes your woman, steals your bottle, and kicks your teeth in.

My list is mostly a snap shot of what I've been listening to a bunch recently. There a few tunes in there that I'm not listening to much at the moment (for whatever reason) but that I had to put on the list. There She Goes was one of them. It was one of the first songs I thought of for this thing and never left my list. A perfect song.

I discovered it some months back when I created an iTunes “radio station” from a CSN song I loved- “Helplessly Hoping”.
I have discovered a LOT of songs in recent years by doing this. The trick is to choose a song for the radio station that is NOT a hit- otherwise the computer will just generate other hits. But if the initial tune is more of a rarity, you will be sent to some stuff you probably aren’t familiar with.

This whole thing started when Doc Oc created a thread counting down the top 31 songs by US artists that his text chain of five middle-aged idiots came up with. The thread was very well-received and we decided to do our own US countdown. Now both us and them are doing a British Isles countdown.

Bonus points for its use in a South Park episode. Gets surprisingly gritty at the end.
This is from Wild Tales, Nash's second solo album, and the first record issued since the formation of CSN(Y) by any of them that did not chart. It has some excellent material and some sappy stuff that was typical of Nash. I agree with Tim that this song is very Dylan-influenced.
One of the very best uses of strings in rock, copyright issues aside.
The Xanadu soundtrack (half Olivia, half ELO) is fantastic. Really underappreciated. Tons of memorable songs on it.
I probably requested this at every wedding of a college friend. We were in college in the early '90s and it wasn't a great time for dance music, this being one of the exceptions. At one I was drunk and couldn't remember the name of the band (Sterophonics? Stereosonics? Stereotactic?) until the DJ figured out what I was trying to say.
I still think Spinal Tap is based largely on Status Quo, and this song is the model for Listen to the Flower People.
I only know their radio songs and this is my favorite of those. Also loved its video back in the day.
First instance in the proper countdown where I didn't recognize the title or artist but knew the song once I heard it.
He has so many worthy songs and this is as good as any. I've always loved how he conveys confusion in his vocal on this one.
Gary Numan before he was famous? Yep, this is on-brand for OH.
