Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

I've put together the data from lists #1-5. It's early to spot big trends, but here are some bits and pieces:

- Are the Big Three performing as expected? Why yes, yes they are. They are currently occupying the top three slots, despite Voter #4* not listing a song from any of them. The other four voters have each listed them once.

- In addition to the Big Three, there are six additional artists that have been listed four times each. One of those was, IIRC, not listed in the guesses for top choices. This artist is currently at #5 and has three votes for the same song, which is currently the second-ranked song in the countdown.

- The current "we like you, but we don't like like you" artist has four votes accounting for only 50 total points. In contrast, the highest number of points right now (also with four votes) is 109.

- On the other hand, the "when we love you, we really love you" award goes to an artist with 80 points but only three votes.

- As previously reported, we have two songs with three votes so far, and those two lead the song ballots at the moment. There are several others with two votes, including one that is only 10 points behind the second-place song.

- Each of our Big Three has at least one song that has received multiple votes. Our current #4 artist has four votes, all for different songs.

*Everyone is getting a Voter # this time to aid in my reporting of data in the future, including matchmaking with your closest allies-of-song. I have made sure that @simey is not stuck with #9.**
**#9 Dream by John Lennon is eligible in this countdown.

Oh, I forgot, our current "one-hit-wonder" leader race is a tie between two songs that have each received two votes for a total of 41 points. These artists are both in 17th right now with that total. I know at least one of them will have more songs taken, though. This is going to be a weird one, as I've already seen some artists I thought might be obvious get another song taken to put them out of the running. Cheap Trick's "Surrender" wasn't a leader for a long time, either, so it will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

I'd love a new designation instead of "one-hit wonder," by the way, since that's really not accurate. Where my creative people at? @Sullie ?

Just to show that OH doesn't know all he thinks he does.

Me: I'm surprised so many people are choosing Yes songs.
OH: People love Yes, man.
Me: I'm not sure I could name a Yes song. Do I know any Yes songs?
OH: Yeah, "25 or 6 to 4"
Me: :lmao: That's Chicago!
OH: [doesn't believe me, googles it]
OH: I meant "[spoiler song name redacted that sounds nothing at all like that Chicago song]"
Because Yes has that fat horn sound, and they totes sound like Peter Cetera.

(We both rolled out for that one. You can tell him I said so.)

Thank you, and I avoided putting #9 Dream on my list due to the number, but I do dig the song and its dreaminess.

It would have made my list if I wasn't busy being a jerk face.

Another   moment on a band/song that shot into the top 10.

I was going to make myself submit this list tonight, but now I am having second thoughts after this one. What else am I forgetting?? I might have to go the zegrass route and ask for PMs of bands submitted.

I mean, I provided a link already of bands from England - it’s not like that information isn’t out there with a simple Google search.

If it makes you feel any better, I was talking to my wife about my list and she liked at me funny and said, where is [redacted]? You listen to them like every day.

Um..... yeah.... wait....... EFF ME.

But I'm sticking to my guns. Not changing my list, not changing my list, not changing my list...

I learned my lesson in round one - devote a quiet night to rabbit hole and create a rough draft as a play list...then cover-to-cover the play list the next day and whatever 31 shakes out is what's getting submitted. No matter how many times you spin your wheels through this thing you're going to forget songs, so rip the band aid off and move on!

Got all excited for a second, but then the damn American sax players knocked out my Psychedelic Furs picks.

I’ve approved some songs for them, so it’s not their whole catalog. Could you please PM me the ones you were targeting? I’ll look into their stuff and note the problem areas on post #3.

I know you probably don’t want to hear this, but if you’d like to make changes at this stage, it’s fine.

I really found that ranking website incredibly useful this time around. I got the list down to ~48 and then did the ranking....and cut everything below 31....so much easier than the last one.

Todd Rundgren (American) was a session player on Forever Now. Mars Williams (American) was a session player on Mirror Moves, and then became an official member on Midnight to Midnight and Made of Rain. The original sax player, Duncan Kilburn, is English, and he is on their self-titled album and Talk Talk. There is no sax player on Book of Days and World Outside. So, songs from Midnight to Midnight and Made of Rain are not eligible. Also, if you were wanting their song that is also the name of a movie, the original version is on Talk Talk, which is eligible.

1. I didn't see that post of yours. :bag:
2. I've done a couple "best UK artists" searches and looked at lists, but hadn't come across them and my other  either. I will go look for your list now.

tl;dr

;)

I did have one person make so many changes in the US countdown that they directed me that under no circumstances should I accept any more changes from them, no matter if they begged. Then they sent more changes. I refused to make them.
So a bit like this?

More than a bit - they used that exact quote (don’t open the door) when telling me not to accept more changes!

"Luftballons"? ;)

compact hit list?

I don't know how you're approaching the behind-the-curtain work ... but from a data-keeper's perspective, it can be easier to (a) add a new list + delete an existing list as opposed to (b) editing an existing list.

So, it someone wants to make changes to their list, ask that they not send a list of substitutions and/or re-numberings. Instead, insist that they submit a new list from scratch.

I didn't even know the Everly Brothers were eligible

The dialogue with Andy last night made it seem like now was a good opportunity to share my conclusions about our American 31 as I got distracted with real life as we wrapped that up.

YOU ARE A ****ING DUMB *** HOW DID YOU FORGET THIS SONG
#5 Stevie Nicks: Edge Of Seventeen. It just never occurred to me to vet any solo Fleetwood Mac. Because I'm a dumb ***.
#4 The Roots: The Seed. This did not make anyone else's list, but while out for a run during our countdown this came on a shuffle and I just shouted into the never YOU FORGOT THIS YOU DUMMY then carried on, speaking of which...
#3 fun.: Carry on. It wasn't the same run, but the same thing repeated itself. Then We Are Young appeared on the countdown sometime later.
#2 Silversun Pickups: Lazy Eye. The only reason @shuke didn't take #1 with this of my blunders is because he took it with the next add.
#1 Airborne Toxic Event: Sometime Around Midnight. The moment those violins hit on that day's shuffle I stopped what I was doing alt-tab'd over and just blurted out at my office computers you're a ******** fool.

Was on my radar, but for reasons unknown left it off
#5 Fall Out Boy: This Ain't A Scene, It's A ******** Arms Race. Like The Roots and fun. above this was left off by everyone, but hit my ears during an afternoon run and left me shaking my head at myself. I think this was one of those cases in which my rods and cones got messed up between 'best' and 'favorite.' Cause while this is not the former it probably should have made the latter.
#4 Fiona Apple: Criminal. It didn't register on the first note, but by the time she spun her way through the first verse I stopped what I was doing and just muttered how did you not include this.
#3 Incubus: The Warmth. There were a few Incubus songs I pulled to review, but couldn't make space for them. I did not pull this one and with hind sight that was a mistake. I'm glad @Just Win Baby was wiser than I.
#2 The Killers: All These Things I've Done. No excuse for this omission.
#1 Righteous Brother: Unchained Melody. Die, in a fire. You couldn't find space for both this and Reach Out I'll Be There? Like hell you can't!

Best new to me
#5 Taylor Swift: Champage Problems. Maybe I'll become a Swiftee...
#4 Dolly Parton: Shine. What a cover.
#3 Nina Simone: Sinnerman. I'm rendered speechless every time I listen to this - I need to dig into more from her.
#2 Television: Marquee Moon. With time I could see this epic being in the top spot, but #1 jarred me like none other in this countdown.
#1 Prince: Fury. As I wrote at the time most popular Prince doesn't do it for me, so I probably have a lot of blind spots. This was a BIG one. What a track...

Thanks for getting it back into my life
#5 The Chicks: Not Ready To Make Nice. Been listening to the hell out of this song since it was added.
#4 Dandy Warhols: Bohemian Like You. I don't know how this song hadn't made its way to my digital catalogue, but that's been corrected.
#3 REM: Begin The Begin. One of those discs I lost when my car was stolen in 2004, a song I then forgot to get to my itunes, and it never got back into my life...til now.
#2 Collective Soul: The World I Know. Exact same sequence of events as the above, but this one still elicits that chill up my spine with each new listen so it gets a bump.
#1 Temptations: Ball Of Confusion. On first listen I thought I was unfamiliar with it, but after a couple of listens road trips with my parents as a kid began to trickle back into my head. It just never made its way to any of my catalogues. That's been fixed now!

I was working on my list and I discovered one that's ineligible unfortunately. I'm super bummed out because I thought this would have a been a really cool song to include. Since I didn't want it to get completely overlooked I just wanted to put this out there. It's from the past but it's just such a cool song that you never hear anymore I wanted others here to enjoy it, re-enjoy it, recycle it or whatever. To me, the cool part is David Gilmour's guitar work it's so, so typical David Gilmour in that it seems simplistic but it's deep and soulful if that makes sense? I think he's probably one of the most overlooked guitar gods of the era, hiding in plain sight perhaps? Anyway, I give you No More Lonely Nights featuring David Gilmour on guitar. He has two very nice solos, I wish the one at the end didn't cut off, I could listen to that all day.

What makes you think Paul McCartney is ineligible?

Also, the gold medal of all guilty pleasures goes to Eric Carmen: Hungry Eyes. There's only 3 of us in the office and probably barely more in the whole building, so let's turn this up to 100 cause it's December 22nd and who ****ing cares...

Because Linda is on it.
Yes but it would only be ineligible if it was credited to Paul and Linda McCartney.

Of all the "rules" out there the solo artist is the simplest one. This is a "Paul McCartney" song - nothing else matters except for Paul's eligibility.
