Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (7 Viewers)

Let's see what's on tap for tomorrow!

We have our first appearance of the Big Three! Since there are only three to choose from, surely y'all can guess this one, if given enough chances.

And we have three (3  ) artists get knocked out of the tiebreaker Ace Award guesses. In fact, one of the artists has two other songs selected. As a reminder, that means four songs from artists listed below (in addition to Blur, which was knocked out today):

Five votes:
Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve

Four votes:
Son Of A Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield

Two votes:
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
In The Summertime - Mungo Jerry

One vote:
She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby
Tell Laura I Love Her - Ricky Valance
A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procol Harum
Cruel To Be Kind - Nick Lowe
Song 2 - Blur
Damaged Goods - Gang of Four
One Night In Bangkok - Murray Head
I Will Wait - Mumford and Sons
Time Of The Season - The Zombies
Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears for Fears
Wild Thing - Troggs
Bang A Gong (Get It On) - T. Rex
Freedom '90 - George Michael
You Got Another Thing Coming - Judas Priest

I ran out of skips so I had to sit through Bittersweet Symphony.

It sounds like a community orchestra sharing the same stage with a middle school band that's tuning their instruments. :yucky:

reaktion.
It's okay. I'm just not kidding.

i gotcha, it's just usually when I get all in a "I'm not in a kidding mood" - it has never involved "The Verve"
It's just a little payback for some razzing Yankee's given me over the years for my liking of Cast Away.

I am thinking that with Mungo Jerry's wide Billboard 100-littered song catalog, I gotta believe he's the shoe-in for this.

@MAC_32 What the ****, man?? This might have been the surprise of the draft. I equate you with more of the rock tunes that we generally seem to snipe off each other. I don't look at who drafts what until after I get through the mix, and was very suprised this was attached to you.

MAC had a great and surprising mix of songs in the US countdown, too.
I am sure he did. I have trouble remembering what I did 2 days ago, so our US draft might as well have been a decade ago. ;)

Sure, go for it!
When I look at the list, I think the two most likely to have 2 more songs drafted are Priest and Tears for Fears. Based on our crew, the next tier of for me to be first eliminated are Mumford and Sons, Nick Lowe, T.Rex and Dusty Springfield.

I am going to go bold: Dusty, Priest, Tears for Fears and T.Rex. Tears for Fears being the one with 2 songs drafted.

How long do you think it would take us if we started listing movies to get to 10 that each of us love and agree on? ;)

I think we'e gonna hit the gambler's NFL trifecta tonight.
  1. Idiot kicker injects 2-point conversion confusion possibilities
  2. Ref's bail Brady out on controversial call
  3. McCarthy clock management skillz bring home the bacon
Jerry spends money on ####### and ####.

Depends if we started with current and worked our way backwards or if we did vice versa.

OK, I am an idiot - 3 are getting eliminated, the 4th being blur. So forget the T.Rex guess for now. :bag:

Very fair. We probably could get there quickly if we started in the 80s. It would probably take us 80 years if we started with 2022.

Hoo-boy. Have no idea how I'm gonna (1) work 3-hour daily playlists into my life for the next month, (2) keep up with all the posting, and (3) give all these great songs their due.

Today's highlights for me:

Songs On My Original List of 75 that Missed the Cut

Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode (New Binky the Doormat)

She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult (Karma Police)

There She Goes - The La's (Westerberg)

Son Of A Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield (falguy)

Songs Not On That List But I Still Love Them

Teenage Kicks - The Undertones (Don Quixote)

Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve (Yankee 23 Fan)

Kayleigh - Marillion (Dr. Octopus)

Is She Really Going Out With Him? – Joe Jackson (Hov 34, Krista4)

Ready Steady Go - Generation X (rockaction)

New to Me Songs That I Loved

Be My Downfall - Del Amitri (simsarge)

Strachan - The Hitchers (Chaos34)

Listen to the Sirens - Tubeway Army (Oliver Humanzee)

As in it gets the axe quicker, or it's one of the safer picks on the list?

Soooo, errrrr, you're agreeing with him?

I guess it makes sense that you said he's wrong, being in Binky opposite-world and all.

Dr. Octopus:

Kayleigh - Marillion

I don't know much about Marillion other than that they had prog elements in their sound and were huge in Britain. To me this song sounds a LOT like '80s Genesis. It's easy to imagine Phil Collins singing this.
Despite not being into prog or Phil Collins, I absolutely love Marillion. I'm talking about the kind of love that has me hunting down bootlegs, rarities, and b-sides. But only the original iteration with Fish - totally lost interest once he left after 4 albums. Misplaced Childhood (the album with Kayleigh) is brilliant start to finish, but being a concept album with all the songs running together, I just couldn't parse out a single tune to put on my list.

@falguy , I'll start noting tomorrow which are duplicate artists, songs, etc. Figure it was OK not to today (though there was a duplicate song and another duplicate artist).

Connected - Stereo MC's @Sullie

ditkaburgers used to sing along to the chorus when she was a toddler accompanied by a little dance where she pointed left and right at the appropriate times.

A post earlier today by Eephus misstated that ditkaburgers used to dance to Connected by Stereo MC's. The song by the band that she danced to was in fact "Step It Up", the first song on the other side of the Connected album.
To be fair, I danced to both songs...and they both slap

I don't always have much to say about the picks I make, but one of the things that I was a tad disappointed in with the last draft is that I wasn't able to snag much from my formative 5th grade - 8th grade years for music. Lots of hair metal and what I think of as gateway albums to my upcoming love for more "metal" stuff. Today's pick of She Sells Sanctuary was of the picks that filled that void for this draft. I might have over done it a little in my 31, but I covered quite a bit of my college years with my 90s picks in the US draft. This tune was originally on the outside of the 31 looking in, but as I listened to my expanded list and moving up stuff that was really clicking and making cuts it kept hanging on.

reaction.

I believe that KP is wrong that T. Rex won't get a 2nd song picked.

up is down baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still have mad love for Brady, but 8-9 teams have no business in the playoffs. Not much they can do if a division sucks in a year like that, but IMO the NFL is already a fairly poor product to watch now, and that only adds to it.

Hi everyone!!

Loving the list so far - lots of stuff I've never heard before, and some old faves (The Stone Roses, The La's, and Depeche Mode).

My tops so far (besides Blossoms):

Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibb (I don't think I've ever seen a vid with Andy without facial hair, it was quite a shock)

Teenage Kicks - The Undertones (oldie but a goodie, I'm proud to say I knew the words before a certain boy band did a terrible cover of it back in 2013)

Kayleigh - Marillion (I've seen this on a few top faves today. I definitely heard Genesis too, so I'm glad it wasn't just me)

Right Back Where We Started From - Maxine Nightingale (Unlocked a deep core memory, did some googling, then realized it was featured in a Goofy Movie sequel *facepalm*) Sorry to say this might be a pattern from me lol!

Connected - Stereo MC's (Like @Eephus said, I did dance to it as a toddler...still slaps and it's now on my bi-monthly playlist)

What's this now?

So some rules for this time around:
1) I’m avoiding putting in any song from the Big 3, as they’ll obviously get enough love
2) To keep some measure of suspense, I’ll reserve the right to put bands that made my list in favorites. Though I’ll try to (/likely will) avoid any songs that appear higher on my list. Of which there are two today!
3) It’s thus “selected” favorites for a reason, but these rules are flexible. Especially this one! I expect to make a shift somewhere along the way.

#31s
Recognized by title alone: 19
Sounded familiar: 3
Didn't know: 21

Selected Favorites:
Kayleigh (Dr. Octopus) - Flashback of the day!
She Sells Sanctuary (KarmaPolice)
Connected (Sullie)
Ready Steady Go (rockaction)

Songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Lights (MAC_32)
I Wanna Be Adored (zamboni)
Strachan (Chaos34)
Your Girlfriend (ditkaburgers)

Link? (Other than Brady)
Just my opinion. I can't get through an NFL game anymore. I can't remember the last full game I watched - probably the ATL/NE Super Bowl? I find it mostly dull as I get bombarded with commercials, replays, and long stretches between plays.

Do you watch NCAA football? That's the one I can't tolerate, for the most part.

Red Zone channel resolves that, but the Sunday, Monday and Thursday night games do seem worse than ever. And their schedules (especially Thursday night) were horrible.
