Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

Just popped in to post this. It's definitely worth a tumble if you like the 007 series and you were ever curious about the music. I thought it was really interesting that Duran Duran put in a bunch of effort to do a Bond theme, I had no idea. They were so popular at that time, as I recall, that I didn't think they would have had to put any effort into being selected.

The companion Sound of 007 concert at Royal Albert Hall was kind of a mixed bag. It started off strong with Dame Shirley Bassey and Lulu but ran downhill from there. My favorite part is when composer Hans Zimmer accidentally pulled out his guitar cable during his solo and couldn't reattach it. Finally David Arnold reached over and plugged it back in for Zimmer but by then his solo was over. It was like Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls emerging from his pod at the end of the song.

I always thought Common People was a big hit in the States but it must have been more a cult song. So many people here and who I know IRL were seeming first exposed to it recently.

They must not have been cool or edgy at St. Martin's College

Fantastic - thank you!! I've added a link to this in the second post.

Speaking of Duran Duran, I mentioned previously that my favorite of theirs wasn't chosen, so I guess I can disclose what it is. No love for The Chauffeur? Is it because it was too hard to spell? Maybe it just sounds too dated? It's my favorite and not particularly close.

Reminder that you don't really want to be leading right now.

I always thought Common People was a big hit in the States but it must have been more a cult song. So many people here and who I know IRL were seeming first exposed to it recently.

I've been surprised at how many people here hadn't heard it. I'd thought it was a big deal, too.

And thus concludes my Hippling. Sorry, busy work day.

Oh, yeah!

Well then..... suck it, losers!!! ;)

So far at the top of my list of bands I need to listen to more based on my reactions to songs drafted are Duran Duran and Deep Purple.

I think the universe is telling me I need to learn bass or something - I am oddly fixated on bass guitar in songs drafted. It's not usually what I notice first.

Duran Duran is awesome. They got a lot of **** for being big stars and marrying supermodels but sorry nerds, their music is still good. It’s possible to be cool, hot, popular and talented.

Other than the few years I had to drive my step-son to school I didn’t and still don’t really listen to hit radio. So if it didn’t get played during that 15 minutes, I could have missed it.
I’m pretty sure I’ve heard it - but didn’t pay attention to it.

Huh, for some reason I thought I had Baba O'Reilly for the song. Maybe I had it written down with Son of a Preacher Man and went the other way. I do like the Wish You Were Here pick as well. I was trying to think of a Floyd song, but in the end could convince myself they would be popular enough overall.

@Pip's Invitation I heard Jerry "The Geater" Blavat passed away. XPN's doing a salute to him tomorrow from 2 til 7
One of my friends texted me about that earlier today.

I also got a call from my stepmother, who probably only has a few months to live, saying that she was thinking of me because she heard the news about David Crosby.
You ever listen to his show XPN runs on Saturday? Drove me crazy because it's obvious he lived/loved the music he played, but he talked all over the records he played.

Oh, don't I know it.

I just double checked your entry to make sure I didn't screw up - Son of a Preacher Man was indeed your pick.

Oh, hell - it wasn't meant for you to do that. Thanks though, I also double checked but like I posted I think I had stuff written down for the questions and had a couple I was debating on.

I'm the only one with Zep and Son of a Preacher Man, so I know what to "cheer" for.

Finally listened to the new-to-me selections from yesterday. Wow, this was a great group! Nothing that I disliked, and many I enjoyed quite a bit and added to my playlist.

First, though, the lengthy list of songs that I thought were new-to-me and weren't, all of which I like. :bag:
Sunshine of Your Love by Cream
In the Meantime by Spacehog
The Caterpillar by The Cure
I Feel Free by Cream
Complete Control by The Clash
Your Love by The Outfield
Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues by Mclusky (I hear this around my house a lot but never knew what it was)
Airbag by Radiohead
Prodigal Son by The Rolling Stones - where did this land in the @Dr. Octopus rankings (if at all)? Love this one.
Love Is In the Air by John Paul Young

How can I be this bad at recognizing song names? :lmao:

OK, actual new-to-me songs that I enjoyed the most:
Cody by Mogwai - Maybe it was because I'd just done yoga before listening, but loved the vibe. The song seemed to fly by more quickly than its run time.
American Trilogy by the Delgados
Silver, Blue & Gold by Bad Company
I Am The Resurrection by Stone Roses - my favorite of the day
Hey Now! by Oasis
...Out of Time by Chris Farlowe - so weird, so good

This was a similar playlist for me as night was. Plus I had fun with the random thoughts, so why not...

New to me adds to the playlist:

SOMEWHERE WE ONLY KNOW - KEANE @krista4 Sure, it sounds a bit like Coldplay, but I dig me some Coldplay and this song was great.
GET MYSELF ARRESTED - GOMEZ @DrIanMalcolm This song was fun as hell.
PARIS - THE 1975 @Eephus I don't know what band I was thinking of when I saw the artist, but I wasn't expecting this. Great sound and sound. Faint whiff of Phil Collins?

Another wave of the thanks for taking a song I didn't think would get attention awards to @Manster and @Just Win Baby . Mother and Undisclosed Desires are soooooo good.

How about the I Just Got My Bollocks Rocked award to @zamboni ? Holy **** Lady Strange rocked. I had a brief thought while I was doing research that I should maybe revisit High and Dry and On Through the Night. I don't remember much about either album but this song blew me away and an early Leppard deep dive is on the horizon.

An odd one here - thanks for picking what movie I am going to obsess about watching now award to @ditkaburgers and @Don Quixote . I don't know why songs from 10sec scenes of movies drill in my head, but they do. That's why I was stupidly convinced somebody was taking songs from movies the last draft. Cruel Summer and In the Summertime make me think of Karate Kid and Wedding Crashers.

The alright you wore me down award to @Mister CIA , and I guess anybody else taking Yes songs in the last few days. I've been resisting, but that bass officially pulled me in tonight. Starship Trooper was added to the playlist. ****, now I also want to watch Starship Troopers.

Not quite an award, but @Oliver Humanzee - you need a hug, mate?

I usually go right to the bassline. If I could play (and I can't), it would be bass.

Round 27 continued

Spooky - I love Dusty's voice, and it works well on this cover song. Her soulful voice was instantly recognizable, and my favorite of any British female vocalist.
The Killing Moon - This song reminds me of visiting my sister at NCSU, and going to a bar called Barry's in Raleigh. That bar played great music.
Back to Black - One of my favorite songs by Winehouse. She always seemed like a throwback mix of soul, jazz, and blues. An old soul in a young body shackled by inner demons.
Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress - Golden oldie
Evil Woman - This song reminds me of growing up in the 70s. ELO was played a lot on the radio, and I've always liked them.
Bitter Sweet Symphony - I like this song and the whole Urban Hymns album.

Maybe to be continued...

Guys? I just enjoyed a Pink Floyd song. Might be pushing my luck listening to Jethro Tull now.

Good luck... I tried, but it's not happening.

Since I do force myself to listen to at least three minutes of each song, I did get 10 seconds or so of flute.

Today's new-to-me winners!
On the Turning Away, by Pink Floyd - I'm as surprised as anyone about this.
Paris, by The 1975 - wow
