GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (6 Viewers)

I have about 6 little kids that play on my street. They're outside every day during the summer. Sometimes I have to wait 15 seconds for one of them to move a bike or something. I seem to remember doing exactly the same thing as a kid, so I don't go all Karen about it. Glad they aren't sitting inside with their eyes glued to a screen.
hell yeah, we played in the street and in the dark too - but we didn't expect people to bow to us - we knew we really weren't supposed to be there - and we sure as hell didn't set up nets!!!

kids have been playing in the streets for over a 100 years - they just never took the stance that they had preference over cars

so ****in' obnoxious ...didn't figure you to be part of that crew

Like I said in my OP, I rode up and down that street like a maniac as a kid, but 90% of the time it was on the sidewalks (there were some uneven sections that made for some pretty sweet jumps) ... or... IF I happened to be going into the street I would actually LOOK to see if anyone was coming. My parents told me to be careful and watch for cars. These parents obviously tell their kids to go ahead and act like the street is their domain. Oh, and something I forgot to mention... these kids? Yeah, they're like 4-5 or so and NO HELMETS ON.

on a streak of women's field hockey, women's indoor track cycling, men's rapid pistol final and now men's gold medal badminton match

THIS is what is awesome about the Olympics
I watched the last 25 minutes of the bronze medal women's surfing competition. Saw 3 waves surfed and lots and lots and lots of floating.

And I'm curious what slow pistol looks like.
rapid pistol is 5 shots in a row. all apparently all have to be on the same line at different targets.

i guess slow pistol is one shot at a target?? these pistol competitions are weirdly fascinating but i know nothing other than there's a gun involved.

Noice. That brings me back to my very late college / just after graduation years.

I remember I was listening to the local rock radio station in Santa Barbara and they had one of those "guess who sings this song and win a free CD" things, and the song was clearly Filter, so I called in, it rang, I won Filter's CD. Ahhh the mid-late-90's were the bestest.

We set up nets for street hockey. Had to move them when cars came down the street. Was never a problem.

Shouting "car!" and moving the net was part of every summer.

Absolutely. We did the same. But it sounds like you had some semblance of knowing when a car was approaching and would hustle to move the nets out of the way.

In this case, a few things:

1. These are like... toddler-age kids on tiny bikes without helmets just cruising around in the middle of the street. Again, at night. They are NOT paying attention to anything going around them. Ever.

2. They not only have a pickleball court painted on the street, but a four-square court AND basketball court that spans the entire width of the street. With, of course, one of those portable hoops at either end. This street is literally their f'ing playground.

3. And something I failed to mention in my OP, every time I drive down the street and these kids are forced to get their nets (or themselves) out of the way, they look like I'm the one causing the inconvenience.

If that makes me a "get off my lawn" curmudgeon then so be it, I'll take it. The parents are entitled jerks.

I've spent a long time working to achieve curmudgeon status. There are currently 4 kids sitting at the top of my driveway. I just took my trash out and told them I'm leaving in a few minutes, can't see them when I'm backing up, and I'm sure their parents would miss them if I ran over them in my truck.

Haha, I turned 50 last year and I think it really started hitting me then. Most commercials irritate me. I hate stupid drivers. Etc.

Also - I live on what I guess you'd call a "feeder" street. On one end it links up with a fairly large thoroughfare (2 lanes each way, 40 MPH speed limit) and it leads into the heart of the neighborhood. So we get a lot of traffic, a lot of which probably drives too fast. I have most definitely done a "slow down" to many a driver if I'm outside.

But, in MY case, in my OP on this, I was MAYBE going 10MPH. Probably less. Was I going more coming around the bend before I saw the kids in the street? Probably. But no more than 15MPH. It was just this guy's delivery and the fact that we have to deal with this BS all the time. I am just glad I don't live here anymore and I'm just here 3-4 times a month. Bah humbug.

Off to Colorado this afternoon for a few days. Meeting up with one of my best HS friends, one of my best college friends, and a mutual friend.

Brisket and beer at my buddy's house tonight, maybe hit up downtown Golden for a drink.

Drive to Steamboat Springs tomorrow for 3 nights. Good food, good beer, some live music... and hopefully get to float the Yampa River (it's closed right now 'cuz the water temps are too high - never heard of this?)

Need me some relaxation.

the yamp is a good river but you need a lot of water to float it so they must have high flows a lot of the rivers close out west in the summer due to temps or they put them under hoot owl restrictions where you can only fish until 2 or 3 pm or something like that check out the rodeo in steamboat and have a great time take that to the bank bromigo

It's top 10 or 5 goat tv for me. Love it.

Sigh. Flight's delayed over an hour. Which means getting to my buddy's place much later than first thought, which means a later dinner and less beers in my belly to boot.

Stupid Southwest, stupid weather. Bah.

Belly up at the bar and get to work! The is quitter mentality right here! When life gives you lemons, you make vodka sodas with lemon!

I should be like the David Goggins for the unmotivated lazy drunks like me.

Fixed, and done. Now just gotta hope the flight doesn't get pushed out any more. It's just Denver for Pete's sake.

Weather in the area in summertime can be pretty sketchy

A buddy flying from North Carolina to Denver on United had absolutely no delays.

There has been atrocious weather and myriad flight cancelations due to weather in NYC and the east coast. It is impacting a lot of flights at the moment.

Most definitely. Which is why I was kinda surprised that my buddy's flight from North Carolina was not impacted and mine - on Southwest, who doesn't travel back east as much - was.

Fwiw, I have no idea if there even IS something called slow pistol.

Could have been that his flight was first out or originated from NC or wasn't impacted at all by weather? SWA is going to be in all sorts of disarray due to weather issues the last 48 hours.

(conference call)

Academic Advisor: So, Wazoo! I hear you're from New England! Have you seen the movie Fever Pitch?

My 🧠: Brb, going on vacation

Finally catching up on work emails and the FFA after my time away. Real fun time, but man the elevation got to me. I am sooo out of shape! :oldunsure:

Lots of beer, good food. 10-mile bike ride along the Yampa River and then also floating the river for a couple of hours. Went to a free concert in a park, saw Animal Liberation Orchestra, who happened to go to college w/ me. Got to meet the lead singer after the show for a pic, and also met some college folks that were in the crowd. Super fun seeing alumni "in the wild". Glad to be home but sure was nice being on a long weekend vacation with buddies.

Sorry Dickies. That's a rough one for sure. What was her name and what kind of dog?
Her name was Abby and she was a rescue mutt. We suspect she was a border collie and aussie mix.

Here is a picture.

Beautiful girl! Bet she had a TON of energy. And good on you and the fam for rescuing her. True heroes. So sorry for your loss.
She actually didn't have a ton of energy, which is why I suspect she may have been abandoned. They found her in a metal barrel outside of Bakersfield left to die as a puppy.

She was super athletic, agile and fast, but after a good run/walk she would gas out and sleep all day. I suspect she was heavily abused in her short time before us. When she was a puppy any time she would see someone wearing boots she would tremble and empty her bladder. She was always unpredictable with strangers despite taking her to multiple trainers and camps. Eventually we just learned to live with it and find someone else to watch her if we wanted to have people over.

When it came to our family and the people she was familiar with, she was the absolute perfect dog. She never bit or even growled at the kids even when they were toddlers and wanted to ride her like a horse when all she wanted to do was nap.
