HOKA shoes - anyone have a pair?

I ran in them consistently as I got older (Cliftons) and have since continued using them as a weekend walker since my Achilles tendonopathy shut me down (and inability/laziness to do PT).

Big fan.
Tell me more about this Achilles tendonopathy. My heel suddenly starting hurting a few weeks ago. It's been slowly improving, but still hurts. It isn't bad enough to actually see my doctor about this, but in a phone call he mentioned plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis, and bone spurs as potential causes. He basically told me to get over the counter orthotics and see what happens in a month or two.
I have bottom of heel pain too. Ice and crap doesn't do anything. Only these exercises (heel raises).
Stretch your calves and achilles...that's the core problem you need to solve. Also...these inserts also did wonders for me.

Story time.....

As I've mentioned a time or ten thousand, my buddy is the newest guitar player for The Eagles (and has been in Mike Campbell's band The Dirty Knobs for a while now) so he's getting a glimpse of celebrity life, albeit the life of the older, wiser celebs.

The other night, he gets invited to a private party and instead of re-telling the story, I'll just turn it over to Chris in his own words:

So when we finished our session at Mike’s house/studio yesterday, our producer George Drakoulias invited me to go to this party – it was a listening party at the legendary Village Recorders studio in West LA. And it was for an album that Jeff Bridges made in the 70s around the time of King Kong, and it’s being re-issued by some Indie label. There were about 30 people at the party, with food and booze, mostly Hollywood and music industry people. But the Dude was there and so was the great Candy Clark. He just gave a brief self deprecating speech about the album and was delightfully charming. Then he went around the room and talked to everybody. I hung out there for about two hours, pretty cool. I was introduced as “the guitarist for the Eagles” and we both laughed. And he said “you know I don’t actually hate you guys…”

You can listen to one of the songs off the album - "Obnoxious" - from this story by Pitchfork. I gave it about a minute and it's, uh......well it's terrible. I'm trying to be nice, but it's bad.

Maybe it gets better? There are two songs feature the late great Burgess Meredith and nothing, I mean nothing, screams rock and roll like Burgess Meredith!

gang my mom was admitted to the hospital last night after her blood oxygen level was at 70 it should be 95 or higher and she was having shortness of breath and hypoxia symptoms they also found fluid around her heart and potentially some indications of congestive heart failure and she had a kidney out last year for cancer and they are still trying to rule out spots on her lungs being cancer but all of that said it sounds like the working theory is that she has pretty significant pneumonia in both lungs perhaps both viral and bacterial so they think that she is going to be in the hospital for a week or so while they basically keep her on air and medicate the hell out of her to try and beat the pneumonia since you are all where i come to dump my feelings here i am so please send up a prayer for my mom if you can

Feel free to deposit a basket of thoprawishes and a splash of special healing juju for Momma SWC in your favorite bank.

What this bromigo said...

SWC, sending thoughts and prayers your way for you and your Mom. I hope you’re able to be there with her today and that she’s responsive enough to know her son is there with her or in spirit. Peace and best wishes to you both—and best of luck, my friend.

Just booked business class seats for my daughter and her boyfriend to London. A promise I had made to her(while inebriated :lmao: ) for graduation last year. I’m super stoked for her. And intensely envious.

I’m really excited for her and I got a smoking deal. Very pleased with myself atm.

My crack-of-Don walks are done in New Balance 990v5 shoes. They keep a fat old man going, despite plantar fasciitis and diabetic neuropathy. They last three years at nine miles a week (plus everyday use), so $200 isn't unreasonable. I am concerned about reports that the new v6 might be too pillowy, but the more likely answer is that NB is adapting to its aging market.

Yeah, New Balance cured my plantar fasciitis almost immediately. Been wearing them ever since.

Lost a friend - Big Eddie - to cancer in 2020 and helped move all his possessions with his family from his house to storage/Goodwill/items to sell etc. Despite being 6'4", Big Ed wore a size 11 shoe, which was my size. Ed's mom INSISTED I take his newer shoes - dude was sneakerhead. I thought that was really weird and tried to politely decline, but Ed's mom was a very push gal from Boston and she wasn't taking no for an answer. So I ended up with about 5 pairs of Dead Ed's shoes.

I debated on wearing them, but they were pretty nice, new and figured it would save the GM Fam some bucks. So wore them I did.

My boss asked me about my shiny new yellow NB one day and asked where I bought them. He was MORTIFIED when I told them they were my deceased buddy's kicks. Couldn't believe I was doing that, would bring it up quite often in a jocular way, but whatever.....free shoes!

Well guess who else wears a size 11 and is a New Balance devotee? Yup, the boss. And while not a sneakerhead, he spends a TON of dough on NB sneakers and wears them for like a month to two months tops. So one day, he brings in a sack of New Balance. HUZZZZZZAH!!!!

TLDR; I haven't had to buy sneakers in like 5 years. And now, when my boss strolls in with fresh New Balance sneakers, I ask him how he's feeling and if those are extra wide for my fat feet once he's dead. :lmao:

RIP Big Eddie

I posted in the college thread but have been busting at the seams with pride so wanted to post here too...

Floppinho got in to: USC, BU, Oxy, UMiami, Brown, Columbia, Princeton and Yale!

Waiting on FA for final decision (Yale, unless they screw us), but we're all beyond belief. I've told my kid many times that I'm proud of him and know he'll do right whether he goes to college A, B or C or chooses not to go to college (or didn't get in anywhere). We got super lucky with him.

That's incredible, Flop! WOW! Keep us posted in here if you don't mind since not all of us follow the college thread, which really is one of the best running threads in the FFA. SO MUCH good info in there. Very helpful for when my boys were navigating the waters.

And with that, I'm about to witness my oldest walk across the stage at Oregon for his diploma in June. Crazy how dang fast the time goes. Feels like I was just taking him to visit colleges during Covid and now, he's basically done. Man.

Lol....yup, Naked Jump party kid is about to graduate. Shockingly, he's living with his long-term boyfriend Luke - who could have seen that one coming? :lmao: We had Luke's dad over for dinner last week and had a marvelous evening.

My boy is graduating from the Honors College with a double major in Sociology and Spanish and a minor in Econ, which he wrapped up last year. He's basically just down to one Spanish class and his honor's thesis, which is a biggie. Very proud!

He spent a semester in Spain last year and has applied to go back to Spain after graduation to teach English. I hope he gets that job - would suit him just fine for now. This kid, I don't worry about ever. Has every dollar he made slinging sandwiches at Jersey Mike's in HS, has worked the entire time at Oregon and could stroke a check to pay off his student loans if he wanted to do so, but I've advised against it for now. Keep that cash cushion and pay off the low-interest rate loans over time. Go see more of the world, son.

amazing. and amazing kid.

I'm pretty sure floppinho still doesn't know how to tie his shoes, let alone write a check.

never had a girlfriend/boyfriend or even so much as a real date. so college is going to be huge for him. it was looking like USC for a while- which is awesome, but FAR. yale and princeton are both essentially 1-1.5hr subway rides away in case he wants or needs to come home for any reason. or if we want to see any of his performances (we do and will). hopefully he'll kill it at college and absorb some of that life-skill stuff the way your kid has, and finds his own Luke along the way.

you guys and gals are all really kind and it means a lot mom has a broad based inflammation of her lungs from her cancer treatments that just ended post kidney removal last year on top of that she also has both bacterial and viral pneumonia in both lungs so that was zapping her ability to get oxygen into her blood stream they are treating the pneumonia which is going to take a while and then they will get after the side effects from her cancer treatments once the pneumonia is taken care she is borderline icu but they say as long as her oxygen levels keep improving and they are very slightly every day that she should avoid it but it is touch and go and all i can say is thanks for listening my fellow internet wierdos you are the best wierdos there are and i mean it

Congrats!! I think So Percussion are from Princeton, and maybe teach there... Would be super cool to study with one of them.

Stuart Copeland will be rehearing his composition with Juilliard next week... Floppinho is working that around college visits- can't wait!

That’s the one she’s going to! So Percussion Summer Institute.

I think the other one was Sandbox Percussion Summer Seminar at the New School. She got accepted to both but really wanted So Percussion.

my son went to see them perform... i think here in NYC- talked to one of them afterward about Princeton.. couldn't have been nicer. and of course highly recommended what your daughter is doing.

cool thing about Princeton undergrad- only school he's looking at that has an actual performance major (or maybe minor?). the others have lots of performance opportunities, but not within the academic structure.

I'm off to Denver this morning. Three-day conference in suburban Broomfield, but going a couple days early to hang out with some real good friends.

I've been off booze since February 1st, and planned on dipping my toes back into the water this weekend with said buddies. Well, I had a team dinner for my daughter's volleyball team last night, and the coach offered me a beer so I decided to have one. Tasted pretty damn good, and even had a (gasp) White Claw after the beer.

In case y'all missed it, I had pancreatitis over Super Bowl weekend and was directed to lay off the sauce until further notice. I am by no means an every-day drinker (nowhere even close to that), but going out with friends for 4-5 beers now and then is definitely something I enjoy. Add to that I travel for work and absolutely love going to a local joint for a few while I'm in a new city. So it's been two months of "NA" beer, which is simply just not as satisfying.

Anyways, wish me luck as I'll probably have 4-5 IPAs here later. I hope my insides don't become angry with me. :oldunsure:

Busy weekend for us with sports and such. The twins wanted to do track and field this spring as well as soccer, we get them hooked up with this Catholic organization (had to get an exemption since we're not of the faith) and first meet was Saturday. One my twins jumped 12 feet in the long jump. He's 9. I don't think anybody in his age group topped 10 feet. Crazy.

They also helped the 4x100 relay team win and took 1st and 2nd in the 200.

Pretty proud. Pretty pretty pretty proud.

Crazy moment at the homestead this afternoon. Sitting on the couch engrossed in the intense Severance finale when all of a sudden there's this big WHAM into our roof. Like WTF was that??? Next thing I know, I catch a glimpse of something big coming off the roof and crashing to the ground right outside our back deck. WTF??? As I go scrambling to the sliding glass door, I'm hearing all this screaming and there's like a million crows circling and cawing and going berzerk. What in the actual ---???

I'll try to get some photos linked here today...
hold the door!
