I don't have kids but I love my three nephews more than the world and even though I'm across the country from them I stay in touch and very active following their lives. Many of you know the **** show that was my younger sister (their mom) and all of the struggles with her life and a horrible divorce and honestly a really ****ty dad. So I'm going to brag about them because of where there are now and the struggles they've gone through.

The oldest is a junior at Butler and he is killing it. Straight A student and in their sports management program. He was helping run some media events in Indy during the sweet sixteen round. He's also a Purdue fan so he got be in the room for all of the Purdue press conferences. He's super mature and wise beyond his years. His new internship for the fall is Football Operations Student Assistant. He's organizing travel, media events, and recruiting logistics for the Butler football team.

The middle has had the most problems with drinking and drugs as you might expect from a middle child where the dad is void of love and emotion. But he bounced back and got a volleyball scholarship to a Div II around Chicago and he's actually started a few games as a freshman. The team only has a few more games, but they are undefeated! I hope he keeps his head on straight.

The youngest has also many issues and he's now 13. Pretty incredible that he's survived the last few years living at home with just his dad. My sister has now been living with my mom, 2.5 hours away for almost 5 years. She sees him at least monthly and does have an active part in their lives as much as she can. But this dude got recruited to play for one of the best baseball programs in all of Chicagoland. (Joliet Catholic for those who know). He's in his first year and was able to watch him smack a home run (on video) this past weekend. I really think this kid has a shot to play in college and possibly get drafted. He's a southpaw pitcher with a twitchy bat. He's the one that's really survived even though he has a ways to go.

So proud of these guys and I miss them dearly.

hi gang it looks like my mom is going to get to go home from the hospital today after a little under two weeks inside she had a bad reaction to her cancer meds that basically inflamed her lungs and then on top of that infections and pneumonia in both lungs so they fought the pneumonia and infections with bags of antibiotics into her arm every 8 hours for a week and then when that was licked they started steroids to reverse the inflammation she started on high flow 50 units of 100 oxygen and was on that for through the antibiotics and then when they started the steroids after that her lung functions really started to improve and they got her off of the high flow and onto low flow oxygen and now she is down to 2 units of low flow nad and still holding a 95 to 97 blood oxygen level which is where they want her to be so hopefully this afternoon i will get the call to go and get her and get her the hell out of there and you can in fact take that to the bank bromigos

I'm off to Denver this morning. Three-day conference in suburban Broomfield, but going a couple days early to hang out with some real good friends.

I've been off booze since February 1st, and planned on dipping my toes back into the water this weekend with said buddies. Well, I had a team dinner for my daughter's volleyball team last night, and the coach offered me a beer so I decided to have one. Tasted pretty damn good, and even had a (gasp) White Claw after the beer.

In case y'all missed it, I had pancreatitis over Super Bowl weekend and was directed to lay off the sauce until further notice. I am by no means an every-day drinker (nowhere even close to that), but going out with friends for 4-5 beers now and then is definitely something I enjoy. Add to that I travel for work and absolutely love going to a local joint for a few while I'm in a new city. So it's been two months of "NA" beer, which is simply just not as satisfying.

Anyways, wish me luck as I'll probably have 4-5 IPAs here later. I hope my insides don't become angry with me. :oldunsure:
Welp, I ended up having quite a few beers this past weekend (and even during my conference) and I'm feeling fine.

Still I am going to avoid the splurge-y beerfests that I sometimes engage in and instead pop a gummy or two to decrease the need for alcohol. I think I've pretty much given up on hard alcohol - it just hits my insides too hard.

I feel pretty relieved that I can have 3-4 (or even a handful more in certain situations) and my body can handle it.

And instead of having a few cocktails at home on a Saturday afternoon when I'm not going out with friends, I'll opt for a couple gummies and NA beer to satisfy the palate.

With that, cheers to you all. :)

I quit drinking 6 months and 2 days ago after 30 years of daily drinking.

One of my better decisions in life. Whatever change is good for you that you are considering, good luck.

That's awesome, GB. Good on you for making a change that's best for you.

Posted this in the not-athlete accomplishments thread... Amazing night, thought I'd share.

On my way to my son's last Juilliard percussion ensemble featuring Stuart Copeland.

Unfortunately the teachers bogarted the piece he commissioned for them. I thought my son, as their best person on a kit, would get featured...say lah vee.

Still psyched to Copeland and bitter sweet to see maybe the last ensemble performance of my son's life. I'm sure he'll keep performing I college, just not sure it will be percussion ensemble stuff.
Copeland spoke to the group for about 30 mins before the performances and then hung around to talk to whoever wanted to.

He talked about "orcs" ( ), orchestral musicians who use their vision for music (reading the music, watching conductor, etc) compared to rock or jazz musicians who use their ears...knowing a basic framework or chord progression and then playing what sounds right. Each with their own positive qualities.

He also talked about the historical impact of music...homo sapiens communing around a fire banging on stuff, singing and dancing/moving. That brought up a "shamanistic" element to playing...that you're performing, not just playing something.

My wife and I kicked each other, because floppinho is the only kid in that group who rocks out when he's playing. A sea of motionless, blacksuited orchestra, and one tall goofy kid in the back basically thrashing out.

I bum rushed Copeland while he talking talking to some college age drummers after the show and quickly thanked him, explained who my son was (and how much the shaman idea spoke to my wife and me) and gave his commissioned piece some deserved praise. I didn't want to take valuable time away from young drummers who could get much more valuable talk with him, so left him alone after that.

Ended up riding the elevator down with just him andy wofe joking about different stuff. I quoted spinal tap, and he said "I'm not joking- we went through every single one of those things!". I asked how it went opening for a puppet show... The guy could not have been nicer or more gracious (with his time and energy) . Just a super cool dude.

The concert...It was an amazing night of really cool pieces that weren't completely esoteric and crazy (they played a Phillip Glass piece!) like every other one over the past 4 years. I loved it..and I found myself bawling during the second piece- realizing it was the last time, seeing how much joy my son takes from it, and oddly (in that moment) really missing my mom.

I go in and out of drinking nowadays.
I haven't had a beer in months because of the carbs. I'm down to the 220s and try very hard to keep it there or go lower.
Beyond that, is my faith in science and the sad fact that alcohol is poison the the human system. I'll have a couple glasses of wine or some straight liquor a couple times a week, but seldom more than five drinks a week.
The biggest obstacle is the ease it can be used for self-medication and sometimes I'm willing to poison myself for those effects (esp. insomnia, anxiety).

I'm kinda embarrassed to admit it, but before this past Friday it had been YEARS since I went to the dentist. I've always been an every-6-months or at worst, every-year kinda guy, but in the past 7-8 years it just fell off my radar. I never have tooth pain and up until recently, have used a Sonicare toothbrush. I know, shouldn't matter.

Anyhoo, started having jaw pain about a week or so ago but couldn't tell if it was from clenching my jaw at night or if it was actual tooth pain. Went to a dentist. Jaw pain not from a cavity, apparently... but I did have cavities elsewhere in the chompers. Had a filling and a cavity that required a crown yesterday.

And man, the one with the crown was hurtin' somethin' fierce yesterday. My wife, who is no stranger to having dental work done, said that the pain really shouldn't be that bad, and if it persisted that it was most likely due to that tooth needing more than a crown (probably a root canal). I've had a root canal done (many, many years ago) and wanted no part of that.

Woke up this morning and the pain has subsisted, thank the tooth gods!

Thought I'd share... just another example of TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY!

I need to go to the dentist as well. Same story. Was good about it, but then it just lapsed. Now I need 3k of work done and HATE going. In my invincible 20s-30s I was convinced it was all a scam. Didn’t go for 14 years. Finally went. Zero cavities or issues. 6 months later, 3 cavities and the beginnings of what turned into my first crown. I was positive it was a scam at that point. All that plaque was protecting my teeth! I HATE going

Ouch. Back in my late-20's I was still going every year but I somehow got one molar so bad that it needed a root canal. I was working at an architecture firm in the Bay that had a soda machine which was freeeee and a huge box of candy from Costco or whatever... so every workday afternoon I'd mow a Milky Way and slam a Mtn. Dew. Oof.

I'm no fan of the dentist but will sacrifice the uncomfortable feeling every 6-12 months for having to go through what I went through yesterday, not even talking about the financial impact.

Speaking of dentists, my mouth is a train wreck and and dentists are expensive AF. I was getting 50-60k bids for my needed implants, bridges, crowns and surgery. Even Mexico and Puerto Rico were in the 40-50 range.
I finally go into the Harvard dental clinic and they think they can do it for 35 or 40, so I signed up for it. We began in December and hope to be done by early next year.
The hardest thing so far has been the commuting to Boston. It's hard haul in one day, but a hotel and overnight parking would add $400 and I can't seem to make myself pay that.
So yeah, take care of your teeth.

Don't sweat a root canal. Dentists have it down now and I didn't even need a hydrocodone after the last couple I had. It's nothing like it used to be.

Yeah it's been a good 20+ years since I had my one and only.

That said, the process for my crown yesterday wasn't exactly fun, and the pain following (as I noted in my OP on this topic) wasn't great either.

Coworker's dad had all his dental work done in Vietnam though I don't think that was the ONLY reason he went there. :oldunsure:

My dad taught in the clinic at UCSF after h retired and did exactly this kind of stuff when he was alive. Loved it. Miss him.

GL with all of it. Reminds me I need to see a dentist soon myself.

I had some periods where I didn't see a dentist for 2 or 3 years because I have good teeth. I've got ZERO cavities.

But there is a propensity for gum disease and I don't do the best job flossing. That is always my focus and any issues I have are usually gum-related.

Never seen an empty TSA line before. Dude was waiting for me to weave through the maze at 9:15 AM. Starting to get busy now, but that threw me off a little :oldunsure:
sounds like a good day to buy a lottery ticket
Headed to Vegas :lmao:
My sister ate dinner last nigt at El Dorado Cantina next to Sapphire Gentlemen's Club (on Sammy Davis Jr. Dr.). I asked her if she brought plenty of singles.. Have fun GB. Wish I could have made the Spring trip this year, but I might end up out there permanently soon enough

Empty Pre-Check lines used to happen on occasion at some of the smaller airports, but of late it seems the more likely scenario is a Pre-Check line longer than GenPop

Yeah, TSA-Pre lines have been consistently longer than the plebe line.

Still worth it for not having to disrobe and empty your bag.

But they need to shift more security lines to be TSA-Pre

I see this from time to time but of course the TSA precheck lines, even if a bit longer, go faster than the plebe line.

I get to test this out tonight since I have to go to LAX and pick up my 14-year old daughter. Gotta get some special pass from the ticket counter that won't work with my TSS precheck status. Oof.

Yeah, anytime my mom flies in, I go to the gate to meet her. I always ask if they'd like my KTI, and I always end up in the shoe removal and pornscan line.

Was at the liquor store today and decided to buy a powerball and megamillions ticket.

Just on a whim - I have no idea what the jackpot is on either. Guy tells me the megamillions is $5 a ticket now.

I was like - wtf is that all about?

Did not buy one.
