GM's thread about nothing (25 Viewers)

Sidenote: I just fell down half a flight of stairs and I'm not even drunk (yet). Finished connecting a hard-wired smoke detector at the top of the stairs and was carrying the step-ladder, a couple of assorted tools and a beer when my heel only caught about 1/2" of the tread and I lost it. Skidded down probably seven steps, smashed two toes and hit my back pretty good. Worst of all, about half my beer sloshed out when I finally came to a stop.
Vag head brother?

I dropped my phone when getting out of the car at the gas station. Its now sitting in a bag of rice. Hopefully some Asians come and fix it tonight.
Use a vacuum or shop vac extension to suck all the water out of every orifice. Do it NOW. That rice crap is bull####.

Not that bad. Definitely broke a toe though.

Pushed my limited DIY ability to the max by replacing a light switch. Only took two tries, one minor shock and several choice words.

Pro tip: flip off the breaker and get yourself one of those cheapo circuit testers where the light comes on if there's still juice flowing.

Went like this:

- turned off correct breaker

- removed wires from old switch

- hooked wires to new switch

- turned breaker on

- flip switch on and nothing

- grumble grumble grumble

- realize I can see one of the wires is loose

- grumble grumble grumble

- turned off breaker NEXT TO correct breaker

- grab wire to attach

- BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP

- turn off correct breaker

- attach wires securely

- turn breaker on

- test successfully

- summon wife to puff out chest

- wife rolls eyes

Phone turned on again. Problem is the screen is smashed to pieces. Backing up now. Anyone got an old iPhone 4 or 4s they don't want anymore?

Just bought a king bed off Amazon with "free shipping". Here is an email I just received from the company (not Amazon).

At delivery, someone will need to be home to accept and sign for the shipment. This will be a self-service delivery and it is the customer's responsibility to unload it from the back of the truck. If the item is very heavy, please ensure that you have assistance to remove it from the delivery truck. For an additional fee, the carrier can use a liftgate to remove the items from the truck for you. Inside delivery across the threshold of your home may also be available at an extra charge. Should you require these services, please ensure you discuss this with the carrier when scheduling an appointment.
Tempted to tell them to #### off and cancel the order, but my wife really wants this bed. This is a scam.

I'd cancel and find it elsewhere, or call the company directly and figure out exactly the shipping/delivery method and costs. I'd think a king mattress is a 2 man job.

This is for a bed frame. Not the mattress.

I had this happen with Home Depot delivering a W/D pair. They brought it in no problem. Just tipped the guy for his effort.

I'm hoping this is the case. This particular bed didn't have any reviews on Amazon, but I looked at the feedback for this company and I didn't see any shipping complaints. Still pisses me off.

What's a good tip for a guy helping you get a bed off a truck? $30? Why wouldn't he hold out for the actual fee for the lift gate?

Yesterday she posted something to the effect of "good for you you won your football game but you lost the best thing that ever Haplebed to you. My bratty son and my fat ### are out of here!"

I'm guessing he is a Seahawks fan and used choice language during last weeks game.
Are you Oktoberfest? Hope nothing bad Haplebed, Abe.

It's only a matter of time until we have our own distinct language.
I think we already do. I told someone at work the other day I was shuked. He looked at me like I was an idiot. I looked at myself the same way next mirror I got to.
:goodposting: I used "shuked" today when Mr. krista told me, "Be careful walking on that black ice."

I think I know the answers I'll get, but I'm going to post this and ask for GMTAN wisdom anyway.

The Great Seattle Home Search is nearing completion and we are down to two final contenders:

House A is listed at a price that would allow us to pay cash for it. Pluses, in addition to price, are location (95 walk score, and being in the center of the action is highly desirable for us), attached garage, and...wait for it...space for the pizza oven. House A also has one additional "official" bedroom than House 2 (3-BR vs 2-BR), though House 2 is significantly larger. Savings on price on this would be partially put into buying a boat (actually actually true).

House 2 is listed at $250K more than House A, which would put us into a range where we'd need a mortgage. It would be a small ($250Kish) and easily paid mortgage based on my current income, but I don't know how steady my income will be. If we bought this one, I would likely sell our Nica house (which I might do anyway) or liquidate some other assets to pay most of the mortgage back. Being debt-free or nearly so is important to me.

House 2's advantages are that it is mostly amazing. It is about 750 sq ft larger, but not so large that we wouldn't use most of the space, and it has three decks including a 360-degree rooftop deck. The house is facing west and overlooks the sound--absolutely spectacular outdoor space, and the west view means all the gorgeous sunsets. House 2 is fairly car-dependent, but there are a few walkable restaurants/bars, and it's an easy drive into the neighborhood where House A is. Mr. krista would undoubtedly be able to walk to work from House A and could not from House 2 (walk score of 62, FWIW).

House 2 is brand-new, while House A is 4-5 years old. House 2's finishes are top-notch, while House A's are high-end but not at the same level. House 2 has some great character to it like wood-beam ceilings in some places, floor-to-ceiling windows, etc .

There are railroad tracks behind House 2, but they are for Amtrak, which I understand only goes by once or twice a day there. There is no place for a pizza oven at House 2, and the garage is a large four-car one shared with others (meaning you can't use it for storage, which doesn't matter to us).

Our realtor believes he could resell either one if we decided not to stay. (He doesn't say this about all houses.)

For the Seattletonianites here, House A is in the heart of Ballard, while House 2 is in Sunset Hill.

WWGMTAND?

House 1. I don't like railroad easements. That could make it hard to resell if there's a market shift downwards.

Are the slightly upgraded finishes, views, and 750sqft worth 250k?

I don't know the neighborhoods so that could be a reason?

House 1 would be considered the better neighborhood.

I don't care a ton about the finishes. The 750 sq ft would be nice but House 1 is sufficient in terms of sq ft, though close to our minimum. The big difference to me is the outdoor space/views. I love those views and the multiple decks--absolutely breathtaking. Then again, for less than the $250K difference we could get breathtaking views on our to-be-purchased boat. House 1 has a nice little yard and one small deck, so it's not completely lacking in nice outdoor space. Just not as much, and with NO views.

House 1. Pizza oven FTw.

Shuke- "Look Mr.Delivery guy, I know you're in a hurry and have a lot of stops today, but I got $20 for you if you help me pull this thing into the garage"

Delivery Guy Probably Making $18/hr- "Ok!"

Shuke,

My company actually contracts out many of these, what are called "Final Mile" deliveries. Though we don't do it for Amazon, those fees are common and actually pretty standard. The company could integrate that into the product cost or pass it directly on to you, and it looks like that's what they're doing in this case.

Enter into a contract for house 1. Have second thoughts, pull out and enter into a contract for house 2. Change your mind and make another offer on house 1. Change jobs and buy a house in San Diego.
