Greatest Video Game Draft 2011 (1 Viewer)

Red = Bad Pick, Green = Good Pick

ROUND 1

1. PitbullTD - Pac-Man (Arcade)

2. biggamer3 - Super Mario Bros. (NES)

3. Andy Dufresne - Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)

4. madshot31 - Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

5. AcerFC - The Legend of Zelda (NES)

6. Yo Mama - Mario (Main Character)

7. wazoo11 - Civilization II (PC)

8. bmarks6161 - Fianl Fantasy VII (PS1)

9. Slax - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

10. larry_boy_44 - Chrono Trigger (SNES)

11. rikishiboy - Metal Gear Solid (PS1)

12. Mario Kart - Link (Main Character)

13. BlueDredSo - Tetris (NES)
I could site dozens of reputable top 50, 100, etc. lists of greatest games of all time that list Chrono Trigger in the top 5 (and a ton more that list it in the top 20)... To say that Chrono Trigger (AND Ocarina of Time) are bad picks in round 1 just shows that you are more out of touch with video games than you are in regards to the Pac 10's place in the world...
depends on the category they are picked for. Just saying it seems some games are considered a particular genre because of the weapons used in the game/etc. But great games as they may be, they may not be the best representation of that genre.

and that's all the hinting I'll give.
You are correct...HOWEVER, that doesn't make them bad picks... lol Those games definitely deserve their spot in the draft...

Yes, I totally agree. And the wildcard category scores just as high... :lmao:

I really hate this pick!! Not because I don't like the game I'm picking, but because I'm torn between a bunch of different things and have no idea where to go...

5.10 Mario Galaxy 2, Wii (7th Generation)

There are only so many games released that could be described as "perfection"... Strangely enough, it seems that games about Mario are often in that category. Whether it be Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, or Mario Galaxy 2, all are about as good as a video game can get.

and I can't pass up "about as good as a video game can theoretically be" in the 5th round...

I was torn too. I had this game in a list of about 7 games to choose from. IMO, this game is better than Super Mario 64. Yes, I know historically, it doesn't have the significance, but I feel like it's a better game overall. But it with the extra 10 years, it should be.

Arcade - Donkey Kong

7th Generation - Mario Galaxy 2

Roleplaying - Chrono Trigger

Best Story - Final Fantasy 6

Platformer - Super Mario 64

:lmao:

historical significance is the only reason I picked 64 first... I think all of these games need to be judged on the merit of both quality and historical significance... And Galaxy 2 just doesn't have any historical influence yet... Which means it is PERFECT for the 7th Generation Category as nothing in that category is capable of having any real historical significance...

Am I allowed to comment on games that have already been picked for my categories, or should I hold off because people can move things across categories?

rikishiboy's pick

5.11 1943 The Battle of Midway, Arcade 1987

NES game footage (language NSFW)

rikishiboy already has 2 Arcade games picked. I don't know if he wants this game in a flex spot or in as the NES game. Put it in the flex for now until he says different.

Strategy/RTS Civilization II - PC (1.07)

Fighter Street Fighter II - Arcade (2.07)

Best Multiplayer Starcraft (3.07)

Action/Adventure Shadow of the Colossus - PS2 (4.07)

Suspense/Horror System Shock 2 PC (5.07)

Not bad. I think.

Definitely have to do some sleeper pick research.

I like it... You can't argue with Civ II or Street Fighter in those categories... Starcraft is a legit professional sport, so it has that going for it...the only one I'm not worried about is Shadow of the Colossus, and I'm oneo f the ones who buys the hype around that game (I've never played it)... I'm just not sure it is a big enough name for this point in the draft....

5.07 System Shock 2 (PC game) Suspense/Horror

System Shock 2 is regarded by critics as highly influential, particularly on first-person shooters and the horror genre. In a retrospective article, Gamespot declared the title "well ahead of its time" and stated it "upped the ante in dramatic and mechanical terms" by creating a horrific game play experience. The title has been inducted into a number of features listing the greatest games ever made, including ones by Gamespy, Edge, IGN, Gamespot, and PC Gamer.

Of course I'll be the judge of that...literally. :blackdot:

Indeed :) Really like that game, though.

I hate to say it but out of everything he got wrong in his rankings he actually got that one right sorry Andy.(That is just my opinion though)
Again, it depends on what you define as "greatest". Not only is 2k5 better than Madden, so is Tecmo Super Bowl, at least in terms of enjoyment.I think the primary gauge of how good a game is is how fun it is. If you grew up playing video games, you know that TSB is one of the most fun games ever. And I'm still picking MY favorite games anyway, not ones that I think are other people's favorites.
Tecmo Super Bowl was a great pick.

:hifive: I always liked you.
Bo Jackson is still available?
Yes. And I think he'd be a great pick. :X

Where would one acquire System Shock? Is it a free & legal download somewhere?
There's a site I know with old games, I'm checking to see if they have it.
Sorry this took so long. Yes, Abandonia has it. Since it's considered abandonware, it's free to download. Here's the link: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/24684/System+Shock.html (click the "Get it" icon, not the "download" icon. That will just take you to download some crap you don't want. You may have to sign up for a free account to the site.

Yeah, they don't have that one, though.

NFL 2K5 >>> Any Madden I've ever played.
Do these have a decent dynasty/GM feature? I grumble about the later versions of Madden b/c I liked the option just to call the plays and have the AI run the play. Just got to be too easy to know 7-8 plays that work well most of the time and win a lot of games. I think 2005 was the last Madden where that option was available, wasn't it??

Without adjusting sliders and having the AI just ridiculously cheap, I don't know of any football game that doesn't have some plays that just work most of the time to win a lot of the games. Some are better than others. I can't say which, though because they aren't drafted yet. But the addition of sliders in sports games really helped to make the game playable at where you wanted it to be, whether you wanted the game harder or arcadey.

As a judge, I'd love to be able to discuss draft picks in my various categories openly - but I'm worried to do so given the ability of players to shuffle their picks around as necessary. I think that in order to keep it fair, you guys will need to do 1 of 2 things:

1. Judges can't comment at all on picks in their categories

2. Lock draft picks into a particular category when picked and don't allow shuffling later.

IMO.

I realize that, but just seemed like you could have a crappy team and still have those plays work, but if you call the play and have the AI run it, there would be mistakes or passes to a different receiver, etc.. I thought it was just a little more realistic way to play them. :scared: So does NFL2K5 have that feature?

I think it did, but I'd have to put the game in to make sure. I will say that first person football was an interesting feature, one that I see that Madden has kind of adopted with Superstar Mode.

It should be what you list as the first one. The only way I'll lock the categories is if everyone deicides to switch a ton of categories. Changing a few here and there is fine, but it does take some organizaton and time. I could see changing a ton of them being a big pain.

Don't know about the GM feature, but the free agency/draft/sim season features are what I like best about 2k5. It just takes too long in Madden. But in a 30 minute treadmill walk, I can go through 2-3 seasons in 2k5.And the gameplay is still the most fluid to me of any football game.

Looks like I have to play it on a 32 bit machine? Can my Windows 7 switch between 64 and 32? Do I want to do that?

NFl 2k5 actually used there espn integration. (Highlights,Mock draft, interviews.)EA sports took about 5 years to implant ESPN into game play presentation on next gen consoles.

Ive refrained from commenting on any picks in my categories. Don't want to give any hints to those left drafting. I have been commenting on those outside of my categories though.

I wouldn't mind the judges commenting on picks in their own categories... as long as they didn't explicitly rank the games before the end...

I mean, its not like a judge can go "oh, that pick isn't good", and the drafter can put the pick back, they're still stuck with the pick...

No spotlighting, and no direct ranking... Not seeing any problems with it as long as both those things aren't done...

If we lock the picks, I have another move to make first.

I'm going to move my NBA Jam TE pick to Arcade from Sports

In other drafts I've been in, picks were pretty freely discussed by judges. And sometimes things were moved based on comments - I think that's pretty fair.I mean, I'm not going to discuss outright where I'll rank something (because i won't know until i rank them), but giving an indication something might not fit the category the drafter thinks it does, or saying something is overrated/etc shouldn;t be an issue.Verymuch against locking picks during the draft (unless it becomes ridiculous for Madshot to keep up with, of course)

I was thinking thats a good idea. I don't judge either of those categories but I felt NBA Jam was a way better arcade game than a sports title. I think it would get lost in sports where it should be close to the top for arcade. But who knows.

I'll welcome any PMs for insight on my categories but I'm not going to give specific rankings for a pick. I'll only comment on what I feel the category means and how I would approach ranking them. Not going to spotlight either. A couple of people have already asked me about the categories and whether a title would fit into them or not. I didn't give specifics on the title but described my thought process on the genre or category.

regarding my 1943 pick---please place that in my fighter category. I assume this type of game qualifies for this category, if not go ahead and put it in flex.

comment--- I was super addicted to this game. The various weapon upgrades and overall play was just awesome for the time.

I think fighter is more for one on one fighting games such as Street Fighter 2 and Soul Calibur as opposed to an actual fighter plane like in 1943.

I agree. I have some pretty solid sports titles that haven't been picked yet on my list. Since we only have 1 to draft, it only made sense.

I thought it might be that way (guess we missed a category to draft). If that is the case I am perfectly happy putting this in my flex category...It was/is an awesome game.

I am against locking picks...we should have the right to make adjustments as the draft progresses. Then again I am just happy that I have made 5 picks and none were ridiculed.
