Greatest Video Game Draft 2011 (2 Viewers)

18.13 - Super Mario Bros. 2 - NES - Platformer I realize it won't win the category, but it's still an awesome game.

19.01 - Battletoads - NES - Hack 'n Slash / Beat 'Em Up This game was sweeeeet. I remember getting so angry at certain parts that seemed almost impossible. Pretty sure you had to memorize the pattern of "androids" in the part where you're flying on some sort of rocket ship thing. It was a few minutes long, exhausting, and frustrating...but worth it.
SMB 2 is underrated. It took a chance at something completely different than the first and gave a unique experience. You really don't see anything like it in the rest of the franchise.
Doki Doki Panic. The GBA version of Super Mario Bros 2 is a better version. They finally added some more Mario-ish elements that were missing from the original.
I have no idea what this post means.

THAT'S BECAUSE IT ISN'T PART OF THE FRANCHISE!!!Super Mario 2 is actually a completely different game with Mario stuff super-imposed on top of it... It is nothing like the other Mario games because it isn't actually Super Mario 2, the real Super Mario 2 is a completely different game that was never released in America for the NES...

Kid Icarus, nice pick. That game was killer. It does need to be remade.

Hey guys, just letting you know once 5:00 EST hits just put me on auto-skip. At this point I'm fine with whatever I get when I have the chance to check back on the thread. Going to be travelling this weekend and then training part of next week. I will make sure to check in periodically though. This has been a ton of fun. :lmao: :hifive:

Thanks for backing me up on SMB2. Way under-rated.

Looks like a controversial pick. Nice. I still think it's a great game regardless of its authenticity. Don't go telling me there was some obscure better version of it either, because nobody's heard of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros_2it was originally called "doki doki panic" and was about an arabian guy and his family (wife, son, and daughter). They just skinned Mario, Luigi, Princess, and Toad on top of the original family and went with that...

The original Super Mario Bros. 2 was deemed to be too hard for American audiences and was never released here until Super Mario All Stars...

Its not a bad game. Even if we difinitively state it is the "worst" of the actual Mario games, that still makes it a GREAT game...

Cool. I still consider it an awesome game. It added birdo and shyguy's to the mario lexicon.

larryboy is correct. The Super Mario 2 that we know isn't the original Super Mario Bros 2. The original Super Mario Bros 2 from Japan was deemed to hard for US audiences, so they changed another Shigeru Miyamoto made game, Doki Doki panic to include Mario characters and brought that over to the US to become the US version of Super Mario Bros 2. Japan's Super Mario Bros 2 was eventually made available in the US in the form of The Lost Levels in Super Mario All-Stars.There is books of info on this topic on the internet. Just search on Super Mario Bros 2.

The game was revamped in Super Mario Advance (Super Mario Bros 2) to include more Mario elements that we see in other Mario games to make it fit into the franchise a bit more. Some feel that that version was much better.

18.4 Cloud Strife, main character FFVII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Ehrgeiz, Kingdom Hearts

as much as I'm not a fan of Final Fantasy VII and think its characters are overrated, to get Cloud Strife in the 18th round as a main character is pretty ridiculously good value.

Combining him with Cecil from Final Fantasy IV gives me the two strongest lead characters in any Final Fantasy games, so i'm happy with it.

I hate taking this game so close to Super Mario Bros 2, but I already had it queued up. In fact, I've been thinking about firing on it for a few rounds now.

18.05 New Super Mario Bros, Platformer, Nintendo DS

(The Platformer category is so full of Mario games, I may move it to Flex later, depending on how the rest of my picks go. But this will do for now)

Don't let the name fool you, this game is not a remake. It's a full-fledged new Super Mario adventure. In fact, it's Mario's long-awaited return to 2D platforming after a decade. And it's one of the best that the genre has ever seen.

The game is beautiful and it really shows what the Nintendo DS can do. The new additions to gameplay and new power-ups prove that it's a worthy Mario title that can hang with the best of them. I don't think I've ever been so giddy than when I first became Giant Mario and ran through smashing everything in sight.

If that doesn't tell you anything... how about that it's just the 2nd best selling console game of all-time*

(*not including games bundles with systems).

2 New Super Mario Bros. (DS – 24.13 million)

9 Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES – 18 million)**

(**And remember, eventually Nintendo did start packaging the NES with Super Mario Bros 3.)

For grins, I decided to compare those numbers to the last two Call of Duty game's numbers to see how it fared against it. Here's how they stack up. Remember, these are cross-platform.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Cross Platform - approx 24 million)

Call of Duty: Black Ops (Cross Platform - approx 18 million)

New Super Mario Bros Review -

And after 18 rounds, this is how my draft looks:

Slax

Arcade(1) NBA Jam TE (4.05)

Arcade(2) Daytona USA (14.05)

Fifth Generation (1993-2001) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - PS1 (7.09)

Sixth Generation (1998-2009) Half-Life 2 - PC (2.05)

Seventh Generation (2005-Present) Assassin's Creed 2 - Xbox 360 (13.09)

FPS/TPS Battlefield 2 - PC (15.09)

Sports

Strategy/RTS SimCity 2000 - PC (9.09)

I also had Secret of Mana pegged as his first flex spot, but he was skipped twice and it was taken right when he got back.

I wasn't going to pick it here... I figured I wouldn't be able to get it because I wasn't willing to use a FLEX so early and someone else would take it...

This is one game I have never beat and I think I am going to YouTube it to see if the ending is on there. Phantasy Star made some leaps but like other games, it needed a beginning. Final Fantasy is good but there were games before it that revolutionized the genre. I am not taking the first of this game however I am taking the most noted of them, at least for its time. I remember being 9 years old playing this game and watching people play it in basements just to follow the story. This was truly epic and an eye opener as far as games go. Which game is it? I give you:

FPS/TPS Terminator 2: Judgement Day - Arcade (15.12)

Sports Baseball Stars - NES (9.12)

Strategy/RTS Bomberman - NES (13.12)

SMB2, or whatever it's proper name is, was my favorite of the SMB games of NES. Maybe it all makes sense now because I was never much of SMB fan (though I would've gladly taken SMB #1 overall).

Can I send you my picks even though I'll be here? :moneybag: I have been meaning to add flare to my selections but by the time I get caught up on editing in the first four posts its my pick again.

18.07 Ico (ps2) 2001- Puzzle

Ico is a clever-enough hybrid of action game and brain-teaser, but its story of a nameless horned boy rescuing Yorda, a spectral girl, captured gamers’ imaginations with its subtlety. In a world of lonesome cathedrals and threatening shadows, the two must cross a language barrier to cooperate, expressing ideas on platonic love and universal language by poignantly—and now iconically—holding hands. It was an introduction to the minimalist directorial vision of Fumito Ueda; cemented in the later Shadow Of The Colossus and in 2010’s highly anticipated The Last Guardian, his worlds are rich with the suggestion of narrative, but they leave players to fill in the blanks. With Ico, Ueda became one of the earliest designers to introduce the idea that games can be art, and the title must be considered an essential milestone in the medium’s emotional maturation.

Just when I think this board can't possibly get any more :excited: , we get gems like this.I wonder if video game message boards have football drafts in their FFA area.
:excited: I found a few when I was doing searches.
How many kickers go in the first round?
I don't remember specifically, but I do remember one stinker going in the first round. Well, it wasn't a stinker, but it's one that I wouldn't even think would be drafted that went in the first.

lol sure.Ok, I've got biggamer's picks. Anyone else?

I should probably start writing my dissertation on why my team of Video Games is the best team of video games, shouldn't I? :excited:
You mean you don't have one on file? :homer:
maybe some of it...But I like re-writing it every time its necessary...
Larry, how did you fair in the last one? I seem to remember your obsession with Chrono Trigger being your downfall there as well. Or did I just imagine the whole thing.

BTW, you DO know that we have a minimum of 15 pieces of flare, but we encourage our drafters to add 37 pieces of flare to their draft selections.
