Oregon trail is one of the first strategy simulations. You have to manage your supplies and keep track of your party's health while deciding which path to take to get to the destination. Definitely strategy/sim.

Also, aside from the unpicked guy, I was stunned that Simon Belmont fell so far. This may be skirting the rules a bit by posting about the category that I'm judging, but that's a great pick. Obviously the judges will be a bit biased towards the games that they played and enjoyed, but when I think of Castlevania, I think of Simon Belmont. I know there's been other characters since, and perhaps that's why he fell into the 19th round, but I love that pick. I'm surprised he didn't go earlier.

I actually haven't played Gears in 1-2 weeks or so. Whenever I have been on I have played a few arcade games I own or the co-op game Barley and I have been playing through again.

They're releasing a Gears triple pack next month that includes both Gears games and all the maps and DLC. I may pick it up to finally own. Or I may just wait for Gears 3. We'll see.

I'll leave the bulk of my comments until I actually judge things, but Master Chief is THE quintessential video game character of our generation, bar none. I know you and I are pretty much the same age. You can make the argument that the character development isn't there or whatever, but Master Chief is the face of what is probably the most important/influential console* video game series of the past decade. When you say Xbox/Xbox 360, the image that immediately comes to mind for me is Master Chief in full-gear. Halo is the defining video game series for Xbox, and Master Chief is the face of it all. Hell, the series essentially spawned an entire professional gaming league based around it.And this is coming from someone who's never owned anything in the Halo series and has only played the multiplayer sparingly with friends.* console being an operative word here....Warcraft, Starcraft, etc. aside.

I already deleted my Master Chief writeup, but basically, this is the gist of it. I was looking for a character in the Main Character genre that people identified with video games. Pac-Man does that. Master Chief does that. People outside of video games don't know who Nathan Drake is. I'm not a Halo fan and most people can tell you that, but he is about the only character left that is synonymous with gaming.

I understand what you guys are saying. Its just I look beyond the publicity for quality character development in my characters and Master Chief doesn't have ####.

I agree with your original sentiment. Master Chief is overrated. I'd pick Gordon Freeman a million times over Master Chief and it wouldn't be close. And and I could even show you how in internet tournaments, Gordon Freeman has won even over the likes of Link, Mario, Kratos and Master Chief. But unfortunately, no one outside of gaming has probably heard of Gordon Freeman (yes, I would've taken Gordon before Pac Man. Don't think I wouldn't have).
But that doesn't take away the fact that he IS a video game icon. Regardless of what you and I think about him.

I think that looking strongly at character development as the defining factor in figuring out the "best main character" in video game history is a little simplistic, though. I understand what you're getting at, but I think that for this category, it's important to recognize that a handful of video game characters throughout history have literally transcended the video game world and become pop culture icons. That's what separate characters like Mario from the rest. There is very little character development for the Mario character, but Mario is literally a pop culture icon. Master Chief isn't at Mario's level, but there's little doubt in my mind that he's a pop culture icon in the same way that Mario is.

Counter-Strike was originally developed as a Half-Life mod by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess Cliffe. The game quickly gained a following in the mod community and those at Valve took notice and purchased the game, making it a full-fledged retail game. Counter-Strike quickly became the most popular and top played first-person shooter game in the world.
After release of Half-Life 2 and the Source engine, Counter-Strike was retooled and remade to use the new engine. The original gameplay mechanics are exactly the same and no changes were made other than the game physics. Of course, some maps are different, since Source .bsp (map file) files are different than those using the Quake engine that the original Half-Life and Counter-Strike used.
For those not familiar with the game, Counter-Strike: Source pits a team of counter-terrorists against a team of terrorists in a series of rounds. Each round is won by either completing an objective (such as detonating a bomb or rescuing hostages) or by eliminating all members of the opposing team. Depending on how well you did in the round, you will earn money, which is put toward upgrading and buying weapons and ammunition for later rounds.

I had this game...it was ridiculously hard...
and I never got anywhere NEAR the final boss, but the web videos I've seen of the final boss make it look like it isn't even possible to beat the final boss without cheating...

not that anyone will be surprised... but I'm not a huge fan of the Master Chief pick...
I get why someone would pick him, I just don't think he's that important, and the fact that he has little story or character development, IMO, hurts his value here...

Your the judge, so you get the final say on how much you want certain aspects of a character to determine its end value. But for me, Mario, Master Chief, and another high profile characters don't crack my top 10 best characters. I try and remember playing the game and think about what made it great. Does the game make the characters, or do the characters make the game? Everybody does it a different way, but I go by the latter when deciding on my great characters and villains.

Ignoring the fact that looking strongly at "iconess" as the defining factor in figuring out the "best main character" in video game history is more simplistic than looking strongly at character development imo, but I don't think Master Chief's anywhere near the pop culture icon that Mario is. I'd say close to 100% of the general population knows who Mario is. I'd be surprised if 25% of the general population knows who Master Chief is. I know going by personal experience alone is a very small sample size, but of my buddies who don't play video games, I know if I asked them who Master Chief was they wouldn't have the slightest idea. Master Chief is a video game icon, not a pop culture icon imo, and I think that's a huge difference.

Master Chief is nowhere near Mario in the grand scheme of things, no question. And "iconness" isn't the only factor in judging the best character ever, obviously. I just think that it's important to recognize that there are a select handful of video game characters that are more legendary, if you will, than the rest. Master Chief is one of those characters.
