Green Bay: Non-football and cheese-related must-see’s? (1 Viewer)

I’m heading to Green Bay to watch my Steelers get absolutely murdered by the Packers this weekend. The main reason I’m going is obviously the game, but I’ll be there early afternoon on Friday and all day Saturday, too. I was looking online for things to see/do and pretty much everything is cheese or Packers- related. I’m not a cheese guy and I’m already going to Lambeau. I don’t really want to rent a car but I will if there’s something worth driving to.

Any cool museums, quirky sites, etc.? Outside of the cheese thing I’m pretty open. I’ll take best bars/restaurants/gameday tips, too.

 
Kroll's West right across the street from Lambeau.  Homey diner type place with awesome sports stuff.

I went there with one of my in-laws that lives in Appleton.  We ordered sandwiches and they were delivered to the table in wax paper.

Glad you are at least going to the game. From the title I was thinking you were visiting there for non-football reasons and all I could think of was why?

By the way, has anyone else noticed on their iPhone that the Done link on the keyboard doesn’t work on this site? I always used it to close the keyboard and hit submit. Other web sites it works fine, not this one. Wondering if it’s a setting change here.

Krolls is pretty good.  Buttery burger in wax paper.

Not renting a car and not wanting football related...at this time of year other than bars...not a ton there.  

If I were to visit the area and didn't have my family there...Id be staying up in Door County prior to the game.  Gorgeous up that way.

Staying around town...I will defer at this point to people still around there about the food scene.

There is a national railroad museum.  When my kids were a little younger...and even some now Bay Beach Amusement Park.  Little community park with like permanent "state fair" style rides and a couple bigger ones.  Super Affordable. (Free entry...ride tickets are 25 cents each...though some rides require more than one ticket).  But I believe they just had their last weekend.  Also some sort of Animal Sanctuary there...nice place right on the bay (hence the name...and they used to actually have a usable beach for that one week of Green Bay  "beach weather")

It is mostly football.  But a tour of Lambeau if you haven't done it and the Packer HOF...and hanging around Titletown area is still pretty darn cool if you don't have other options.

Heritage Hills was a little school field trip place if you are interested in historical stuff.  Restored buildings and they try to recreate how early settlers were living in the 1800s.  All open air outside stuff.  So definitely weather dependent.  I remember hating this as a kid...but hey, if you are into that stuff...its a non-football option.

Im sure there are some breweries around too...but I have not visited any...so like food, I will defer to those who have been up there for that.

Im a bit out of the loop on GB as my family is all about 30 minutes south of there so I typically am in a different area and not up in GB except for a game from time to time.

 
Thanks everyone so far. I’m not against making it all football-related - just making sure I don’t miss anything else. Heritage Hills sounds interesting, @sho nuff. I love old buildings and #### like that. Weather forecast is great for this weekend, maybe a little rain but only 30% chance now.

Damn, this would be great if we could post pictures. It’s in the top right corner of the keyboard on the row where you can click on passwords, credit card and location to fill in values on a form. There are up and down arrows right next to the Done link. All it does is hide the keyboard. When I click it (with my thumb), I see it change to white from the default blue, but nothing happens. It’s handy when you are in fact done typing and you can’t see the submit button. It never used to do nothing and I tried on another web site and it worked fine. I probably could restart my iPhone.

ETA: Just realized that I’m in Chrome so this is likely a Chrome specific keyboard and now the Done button works. It might be because the reason for edit is there and now the down arrow is blue since there’s more than one form field. Really weird because it never worked that way before on this site.

Just edited. I think it’s a Chrome keyboard version because I know the credit card stuff is available on my Chrome browser as well, cross platform. It’s working now too. No idea why it’s intermittent but I always use it on this site to hit submit so that’s why it struck me that it didn’t hide it.

I like mozz and provolone and will put up with a few others, but I have no interest in cheese curds or fondue or anything. I’ll keep this to myself.

 
bay beach amusement park is ok and worth a look there is a pretty good botanical garden in green bay if i had a day i would rent a car and get up to door county hit fish creek and egg harbor and penninsula state park the colors should be coming in and it should be pretty beautiful looking over the bay i would stay bay side but that is just the side that i like the best the lake side is pretty cool too but i think youd like fish creek and egg harbor the best take that to the bank brohan

 
ps if you have never been here door county is the county literally north of green bay that sticks out in to the lake it is a total tourist trap once you are north of sturgeon bay and has lots of shops restaurants bars etc and should still be hopping in october if the weather holds and fish creek and egg harbor are little towns on the bay side of the county and penninsula state park is between them it has hiking trails lots of pullouts by the bay and water and gives good views of the bay and islands off of the park all of this is a little bit of a drivei think green bay to egg harbor is about an hour and fifteen minutes so someone should stay reasonably sober but its worth it and a fun ride take that to the bank bromigo

 
Bay Beach is great if you have kids, but it doesn't seem that's the case so no need to think about that.  Green Bay is not really a destination City in terms of attractions, but there are some very good restaurants, breweries and bars.  Kroll's is iconic (Kroll's East is probably better that West, but West is across the street from Lambeau.  Kroll's south, in Chicago, is the best of all), but the food is really not interesting. Titletown Brewery, Hinterland and 1919 Kitchen all have good food and beer. I've been to over 100 games at Lambeau and have never really done much in the City other than pre and post-game partying (in my younger days, now I just go in and out.)  That said, October in northern Wisconsin is fantastic.  Its a great time to get outside and there are a ton of great spots to walk around, hike, bike, etc. if you're into that.  Taking a drive up the peninsula into Door County as several have mentioned is a great idea. If you don't want to do that kind of stuff, I would say do a stadium tour and settle in and watch college football at a Lambeau area bar on Saturday.  You can wear your Steelers colors and have a good time with the locals.  There are definitely worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon. Have fun - it is really a special place to see a football game.

 
well, i live here.. without a car you're pretty much not going to have anything to do.

it's not a huge town and there really isn't a central entertainment/shopping district. there are small pockets here and there of mostly bars and some restaurants but nothing i'd call a must see/do.

the area around Lambeau has been developed in a burgeoning entertainment district so there's a full 100 yard turf field, a park for kids, a couple nice restaurants, a Top Golf simulator, all on the west side of the stadium (across the street,  right next to the aforementioned Kroll's).

we have beer. a "Vegas style" casino and all-nude strip clubs. all those things require a car.  unless you're staying at the casino.

depending on who you're coming with there are a couple options. the Botanical Garden is cool. that's like 90 minutes with your wife/gf/partner. 

the National Railroad Museum is cool if you're a train guy.

Bay Beach will be closed.

honestly, if you're not looking for Packers related ideas then the Hall of Fame (excellent and right inside Lambeau.) is probably out.

with a full day to burn i'd probably also rent a car and head up to Door County. it's about 75-90 minutes depending on which town you stop in. they're all quaint. probably will be busy this weekend and there are nice trails, sights to see along the way.

for beer there's Badgers State (near Lambeau), Hinterland (across the street from Lambeau, also has excellent food and a nice indoor/outdoor space), Zambaldi's (new, across town from Lambeau), Stillmank (further from Lambeau, in a sort of industrial/residential area), Noble Roots (on the way to Door County more or less).

restaurants.. there are surprisingly a lot of good ones. food doesn't get too exotic (we don't have a Russian place alongside a Panamanian joint with Ecuadorian and Congolese food trucks out front) but here we focus on quality food in ridiculous quantities for great prices. depending on where you're staying & your general interests i can recommend a few.

get to Lambeau early as the Packers went to e-tickets only this year and there are apparently some delays getting in. i typically arrive an hour early and am in my seat 10-15 minutes before kickoff. modifying that to arrive an extra 30 early this year to be on the safe side.

and if you get to Lambeau early enough, you're friendly and not shy you can latch on to a tailgate or series of tailgates.. then drink and eat for free.  if that doesn't happen send me a message and i'll have my fellas head over and straighten it out.

 
Where you staying?  Are you by yourself or with others?  If you are getting in Friday afternoon, definitely hit up a local supper club for fish fry.  I'm around Appleton so don't know the Green Bay ones but I'm sure there are some good ones.  Have a Whiskey Old Fashion while you are waiting (go with the blue hairs or you will be waiting a couple hours most places on a Friday...).  If you go to Appleton go to Stone Cellar for a beer and cheese curds.  I know you say you don't like them but they have the best ones I've ever had.  They are like a 1-1/2" cube that has great "crust" and are to die for...plus they have their own beers.  Door county like mentioned, go to Peninsula State Park and check out the new observation tower.  Gives a great view of the bay.  Unfortunately colors aren't really ready yet or any drive north would be good. Again driving but Rustique Pizza in Suamico has great wood fired pizzas and nice atmosphere

Thanks everyone! I'm staying at a hotel between the stadium and airport or something like that - didn't have a lot of options.

I went ahead and reserved a car for Saturday to head to Door County based on the universal acclaim here - sounds like a nice way to spend the day. I might look into @yak651's suggestion to hit up a fish fry when I get in - not sure if I'll be energized or crapped out after the flight. The g/f and I just got back from Grand Teton (yes, she returned with me :oldunsure:  ) but I'm going on this trip alone. Don't worry @SWCbrohan I'll keep it sober. UNTIL I RETURN! I plan on hitting up places mentioned here for beers Saturday night and I think I'll head to the stadium area (Titletown?) early on Sunday and see what's happening. Maybe message @mr. furleyif people won't give me some brats - but I'm likeable enough it shouldn't be a problem.

Some great advice in here.   Except no self-respecting NE WI resident should ever recommend a whiskey old fashion.  Brandy.  Whiskey-based are for big city snobs.

if you're going up to Door County then Egg Harbor, Sister Bay and Fish Creek are the Bay side towns that are worth checking out.

on the Lake Michigan side, Bailey's Harbor.

all are pretty small towns but they each have their advantages. 

in Bailey's Harbor there's Hacienda / Door Co. Brewing. they have a nice little space w/ a food truck or two. good beer. plus the lake is literally right across the street. very small town. not much to it. maybe a 15-20 minute drive across the peninsula to Sister Bay. a bit more to do there. Wild Tomato has good pizza. Al Johnson's allegedly has good food but we've never been able to get a seat. very popular.

Fish Creek is has a few blocks long strip of touristy type shopping, but that's worth a stop just to walk around and take in the weather. 

Egg Harbor is a decent little town on the way up to the other Bay side towns. Shipwrecked Brewing has a restaurant with indoor/outdoor space. then you can walk down the hill to the Bay and relax/walk.

Peninsula State Park might be a nice hike. i've never done it, but lots of people recommend it.

Love Door County, and that was going to be my suggestion for him.   Like you said, I can't remember a ton to do around GB that wasn't typical beer/Packers/cheese related.

Sister Bay has the unusual Al Johnson's restaurant that's at least worth a look.

 
I just did a 14 day Wiscy trip, Packers MNF, Ryder Cup 2 days, Brewers, Van Gogh, Dells, Apostle Islands. FREAKING AWESOME!

My one tip for any upcoming visitors- do not order fish on Thursday, you will blow their minds! Every restaurant has Friday Fish Fry on the back of their menu. I didn't see the "Friday Only" on the menu and tried ordering perch on a Thursday.

We could hear the cooks in the kitchen yelling at our waitress, "who orders fish on Thursday?" We could even hear her feeble response, "they're from Florida."

At a Kwik Trip I feel like one of those people Dr. Rick is helping in the Progressive "becoming your parents" commercials.  Thinking how professional the employees are, noting clean restrooms, decent prices for quick food items, etc.  :bag: Wisconsin - Michelin 2 stars.

 
friday fish fries are amazing at the right place but man they are not good for your ticker that is the gods honest truth i hope you have a great trip and yes kwik trips are the best thing ever i basically only stop at them anymore for gas if i can help it and they have pretty much taken over the world around here take that to the bank bromigos 

 
the apostle islands and specifically bayfield are truly awesome it always makes me laugh that when you go to minocuqa its just little chicago and all a bunch of overweight dudes on super expensive boats and atvs they dont know how to back up into the water let alone use and then when you get to bayfield its all the minneapolis mountain biker cross country skier kayaker marathoner crowd basically counldnt be more different in my experience take that to the bank brohans

We drove to Bayfield to begin our 2 week road trip from FL just 2 weeks ago. We even stayed on the ground floor of the Bayfield Inn which puts your head at ground level when you look out the window at the waterfront park and marina. It was great. 

We did the 3 hour boat tour all through the islands and closeups of the caves and historic fish camps. 

Then we went to the winery for the "Heard it through the grapevine" weekly concert which was really good and the wine was better than expected. Then capped it off with a stop at the new brewery/bike shop.

We went Wausau hiking Rib Mnt, Bayfield, Green Bay for MNF, Dells hiking Devils Lake, Fond du Lac/Kohler for Ryder 2 days, MWK for Brewers and Van Gogh, back to FL with a stop in Cinn for Sunday Ryder cup and Sunday NFL TV.

And I just got my Rays postseason game #1 tix!!! WooHoo!

Ok, here's my 2 day recent trip to Green Bay as a first time visitor. We arrived on Sunday, the day before the home opener on MNF vs Detroit. We stayed in the Hilton Home 2 Suites 3 blocks from Lambeau.

I was amazed when we pulled in to the hotel. There were at least 100,000 fans already tailgating the day before the game. Now granted they had a country music concert directly next to the stadium but every parking lot was full of people grilling out. EVERYWHERE!

Now I've attended quite a few NFL games around the league and had season tix for both the Fins and the Bucs and with the possible exception of New Orleans we had more fun in GB than anywhere. 

In the 2 day span we hit many bars within walking distance: Anduzzis, Stadium View, Krolls West (no seats and we walked up to Hinterland from there), Hinterland, The Bar, Green Bay Distillery, Johnsonville Tailgate Village, Titletown.

We hit both Hinterland and the Distillery both days because they were our favs of the bunch. But they change on gameday with limited menus and no bar stools at the brewery. The food at Hinterland was very good, a huge pastrami sandwich and pizza was good. The eve of the game we walked up Holmgren to a Japanese steak house that had great sushi ( we needed a change from our daily pub food dose).

If you need Packers gear wait till gameday and buy from a roadside van. We went in the Lambeau atrium sports shop the day before and the polo I had my eye on was $95. I picked up the same thing from a guy in a van for $20 on gameday.

Don't forget your koozie on gameday, tall boy IPA craft beers are ice cold inside the stadium. Although, I did see alot of Miller Lite going down the hatch of the locals.

Wausau and Devils Lake have great hiking/biking opportunities.  If you make it back go to the other side of the UP and visit Picture Rocks

 
I might've been a bit premature on you missing the leaves.  Seems the last couple days they have been changing so your trip to door county might have some good viewing. Wood Orchard Market going up to door county (Egg Harbor) on the right hand side is a store that has a lot of cool cherry jams, salsa, donuts, etc.  Haven't been there since Covid but they used to have a lot to sample, hope it's still run that way for you to try before you buy.

Yeah definitely worth exploring more. We had a great trip. While we stood in line for the boat ride in Bayfield we struck up a convo with the folks next to us.

"Oh, you're going to the mine in Vulcan?"

"Yeah, thought it looked interesting."

"My dad worked near there. We're Uppers."

"I don't know what a Upper is. Is that like Native American?"

"No. Just upstate."

Ahhhh....another enlightening moment for FL Man.

Musky fish the bay.  There's some 50 pounders in there.  Was talking with a DNR fisheries guy back in August and he's certain there's 60's.  Reminds me that I need to book a trip or two. 

Agree with @SWC about Door County.  Really awesome this time of year too.

My uncle lives in the Wausau area. He lives on the west side outside of town a mile or so and has a great view of Rib Mountain from his front yard.

While we hiked there I spotted some things that I initially thought were satellite dishes. I took a pic and googled them. Learned that they were snow makers that shot snow over the ski slopes.

I mentioned them to our waiter at the local brewery and he told us that on really windy days the man made snow can reach the highway and cause accidents! He went on with, "yeah, someone didn't plan that very well."
