Haven't we learned not to read too much into pre-season? (1 Viewer)

I posted this in another thread, but feel like it deserves it's own. So many people are panicking and changing their projections on guys after 1 or 2 pre-season games. Allow me to refresh your minds with a little recent history. Last year the Steeler's starting O failed to score a TD in the pre-season. There were some people in Pittsburgh openly questioning Ben's ability to lead the team. He had lost his confidence in the playoffs, they said. Some were even calling for Charlie Batch to be the starter. We all know how that turned out.

So please, take a deep breath and repeat after me - "It's only the pre-season. It's only the pre-season"

There, don't you feel better already?

I agree that people are going off the deep end with these preseason games. The only preseason game that means anything is the 3rd and even that game is a poor predictor of what will happen once the real season starts.

There is good information available in preseason though. The writing was on the wall for certain breakouts during the preseason in the past; the 1999 Rams and 1998 Randy Moss for instance. And if I am not mistaken, I believe Willie Parker's projections continued to (dramatically) increase with each preseason game last season as well.

Oh I agree that position battles are something to keep an eye on. But I'm not moving clear cut starters down my board because of a couple of sloppy pre-season games.

I would agree with that.

So the fact Jordan is being held in to block on passing downs is ignore worthy?

Do you really think the Raiders have used their entire package so far?

I think you can look for attitudes and body language more than on-field results. I think this is particularly useful with new coaching staff. By those measures, the Raiders look like a mess.

Sadly, yes.

Sometimes with a new coaching staff it takes a few games. I'm not ready to give up on Jordan yet.

I agree that we shouldn't put too much stock in the preseason. However, Reggie Bush's little reversal of field showed me a lot. You'd think he'd have gotten more hype coming out of college.

:lmao: Shhhhh. How will I steal him in the 9th round if you keep talking about him? Now I may be forced to take this kid Larry Johnson there instead. I've been keeping my eye on him and I think that he has some potential.

Yeah, that pretty much came out of nowhere, didn't it?

I wouldn't put to much stock into Lamont Jordan's lack of production in the preseason, if this is what the thread is about.

Nobody has said we should give up on him. But if you have the same projections today as you had two weeks ago, you are ignoring some information that became available by looking at a few drives of Raiders offense. It might not be 100% reliable information, but it's not useless information. So I am using it to some extent.Preseason games are not good for veteran players in stable situations, but they are good for rookies and to evaluate the best we can how new coaches or new players will do in some circumstances (= Raiders with Shell, A Brooks).
