Where did I say the Yankees weren't one of the most profitable teams? I think it's common knowledge the Yankees are the most profitable team, I was just adding that the rest of the top ten might surprise some people.
Its common knowledge the Yankees generate the most revenue, but they also reported a $30+ million loss in 2008. Thats because they allocate money between various corporations, but the entire venture did not lose money. My point is that those lists are fairly worthless. Owners hide money in various ways partly to screw with the union and partly for tax purposes.
I think DD's point was not that the Yankees lose money (which of course, due to the YES network, they don't). I just think he was saying the teams that claim to be poor are actually making more money than some of the middle tier guys who you'd think would do well financially (or at least better than the Pirates).

And Im saying you cant really know that without taking a look at all the various entities involved in any given team, the valuation of their stadium and equity therein. In other words, the list he's talking about is pretty worthless. But yes, I suspect most, if not all, MLB teams generally turn a profit.

Twitter reports are saying Jason Bay's first choice is to play for the Mariners so he can play close to home. Red Sox or Yanks will have to offer significantly more than the Mariners will to get Bay, though i don't think that would be a problem.

Seattle is a good spot for him. He can split his time between LF and DH, which gives Saunders some time to grow into an everyday player.

Given Seattle's focus on defense, it would be a backwards move to add Bay's extremely crappy defense to the outfield.

That depends on whether they are trying to field the best defensive team ever or trying to compete for the division.

What was Bay's UZR away from Fenway? Is there any way of telling this? I know that Fenway distorts things quite a bit.If he gives the M's a sweetheart deal, they have to get him. Their otherwise great D should be able to fade his iffy glove somewhat.

I don't think there is a way to tell that but defense was crap in Pittsburgh too

Cards to sign Penny, still trying to retain Holliday

INDIANAPOLIS — While not yet ready to announce a deal with free-agent pitcher Brad Penny, St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak confirmed that the team has an agreement in place with a starter and that the only thing left to be done is a physical.

The physical is scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday).

“We don’t have anything to announce at this time,” Mozeliak said in his evening meeting with St. Louis-based baseball writers. “We hope to have something wrapped up in the next 24 hours to 48 hours.”

The one-year deal for Penny could be worth as much as $9 million, as first reported here at StlToday.com earlier this afternoon. The base is $7.5 million.

Mozeliak declined to confirm such details, though he did say it is not a sign that the Cardinals have deviated from their pursuit of Matt Holliday and started triggering their secondary plans for this free-agent market. Penny was a target unrelated to the other moves the Cardinals would look to make should they slip out of the Holliday hunt. If on the off chance Joel Pineiro would accept arbitration before tonight’s 11 p.m. St. Louis time deadline, Mozeliak said keeping Pineiro “would make for a very robust rotation.”

Mozeliak said he met with Holliday’s agent, Scott Boras, on Sunday night.

The two talked for about 90 minutes, Mozeliak said, and the “focus” of the conversation was Holliday.

“Still very preliminary,” Mozeliak said. “The crux of it is are there other opportunities that may confront us prior to him signing where and when he wants to engage. For us, as a group, we’re going through all of our options and trying to decide what makes the most sense for us. There are some compelling things to consider. … I would suspect the timing is not favorable for us, for us to really put our best foot forward with the club. They want to maximize his market and I can’t speak for when that would unfold. …

“We are not setting the pace.”

Mozeliak said the Cardinals are still in position to be patient with Holliday and his agent’s wishes. He did not see the alternatives the Cardinals would pursue as “time sensitive.” Though he conceded that they could become so in the next few weeks. The Cardinals GM said he expected to meet with agents during the Winter Meetings more than other GMs because the free-agent market, not the trade market, was the more likely place for the Cardinals to add the needed players right now.

If the Cardinals were to acquire another starter, thus filling the rotation, Mozeliak agreed that would be a sign that the team was moving on from the Holliday pursuit.

He does not have another meeting scheduled with Boras during these winter meetings.

Mozeliak described it as “possible.”

INDIANAPOLIS — The Yankees’ effort to acquire center fielder Curtis Granderson from Detroit intensified yesterday when Arizona joined the process. Two club sources said the Yankees spent the first day of the Winter Meetings talking to the Tigers and Diamondbacks about the possible blockbuster deal.According to a Foxsports.com report later confirmed by The Post, the teams discussed a three-way trade that would bring Granderson to The Bronx, send pitcher Edwin Jackson from Detroit and Ian Kennedy from the Yankees to Arizona, and the Tigers would receive right-hander Max Scherzer from Arizona as well outfield prospect Austin Jackson, and left-handed relievers Mike Dunn and Phil Coke from the Yankees. Id be ecstatic if they can get Granderson with Austin jackson as the centerpiece to the deal. Jackson is supposed to be a top prospect but his upside isnt as high as Granderson. In other words even if he pans out hes not expected to be an All-Star

BRONX-BOUND? The Yankees are mulling a blockbuster 3-way trade that could get them Tigers CF Curtis Granderson.

“They are on Granderson, not [Edwin] Jackson,” said a source familiar with the Yankees’ plan.

HARDBALL AT THE WINTER MEETINGS

According to another source, the deal wasn’t close to being completed late last night because the Tigers or Yankees weren’t comfortable with the parameters. The Diamondbacks like the trade as is.

Earlier in the day, a high-ranking Tigers official said the club wasn’t moving Granderson, but would listen on Jackson. So it could be the Tigers stalling the three-way action.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman didn’t respond to several questions last night.

If Granderson, who batted .249 with 30 homers and 71 RBIs last year, comes to the Yankees, he upgrades the middle of their outfield. It also might lead the Yankees to walk away from Johnny Damon and play Melky Cabrera in left.

“It would be nice if it all happened quickly, but when that happens you are making some bad choices,” Cashman said when asked about making moves before news of the three-way deal broke.

l Admitted to having an early-morning conversation with agent Seth Levinson about pitcher Jason Marquis aboard a private jet.

l Hinted there could be enough money for Hideki Matsui and Damon providing it isn’t spent elsewhere.

l Didn’t admit Chien-Ming Wang won’t be tendered a contract (he won’t).

Cashman refused to discuss where his talks with Toronto about Halladay are. He also didn’t respond when asked if he met with the Blue Jays yesterday.

As for Marquis, the Staten Island native who was 15-13 with a 4.04 ERA in 33 games for the Rockies last year, Cashman said, “Obviously, starting pitching, nobody has enough of that. Obviously, he is a very successful pitcher and pitched in tough markets. He is a New Yorker and he is tough.”

Jackson is a consensus top 50 prospect and saying he's not going to be an all-star even if he "pans out" is pretty funny. Guy was the Eastern League playoff MVP, will add some weight and will hit for more power in the future, and is a speedy guy with great range in CF. His upside has not yet been determined and remember, Granderson was not a first round draft pick or even highly thought of until 2005 when he was 24. Prior to that Granderson was considered to be an average prospect who would have trouble hitting for power at the next levels. Jackson will be 23 in February so he is just entering his window for major league success.

Looks like Tigers/Yanks/D-Backs talks are back on.

Heyman's Twitter update:

"hearing 3-way with granderson to #yanks, e. jax to dbacks, scherzer plus to #tigers is back with a chance."

Jackson strikes out a ton and has no power. IMO his ceiling IS Curtis Granderson

Why on earth would the DBacks give up Scherzer for EJackson?

:( This part doesn't make any sense. For it to be a three team deal, they must be getting prospects or something from the Yanks, no?

As I've said before, I don't think much of your baseball opinions.

Yep. Olney has the D-backs get EJax and Kennedy.Unfortunately, he also mentions that the Tigers have lowered their asking price.

i guess someone the yankees really like was left off a 40 man roster. Wonder who it is.
Im assuming you are referencing the Yankees trading Brian Bruney to the Nats for the #1 overall pick in the Rule 5 draft? When was the last time a Rule 5 pick made the Yankees roster? IMO this was basically just a "salary" dump. Wouldve probably been better off trading for some low level prospect.

No, I might miss you saying something like Adrian Peterson won't be as good as LT2 for 5 years, Jeff Kent was the best hitting 2Bman in league history, or that your neighbor the Giants insider said Eli Manning wasn't going to start the next day. I didn't say I didn't enjoy your posts or you weren't entertaining Vinny, I said I didn't think much of your baseball acumen.

From Joel Sherman of the NYP:

#Yankees recognize A.Jackson must be in deal for Granderson, but want to re-configure back end to keep Mike Dunn, give up different prospect

Latest from twitter:

latest 3-way looks like this: yanks get granderson; dbacks e-jax, i.kennedy; tigers scherzer, schlereth, a-jax, coke.

lol....this is the Mike Dunn they're talking about. Granted he may turn out to be a usable LOOGY, but even that remains to be seen since he's been so wild.

What in holy hell is AZ thinking with this deal? Why would they want Jackson over Scherzer?
And they give up their first round pick in 2008 in Schlereth? The guy cruised through the low minors, sporting spectacularly outrageous strikeout numbers. This rumor makes zero sense

Scherzer, Schlereth, CokeSo which of these pitchers project to be starters, and which are relievers?

Well they get Ian Kennedy in this deal also. I guess they think Kennedy+Jackson>Sherzer/Schlereth and for them that might be right.
I agree that's what they're thinking, I just don't understand why especially with Jackson being arb eligible this year and next and then a FA after two more years while both Scherzer and Schlereth are cost contained. I guess maybe they think 2SP>1SP+1RP

Scherzer is the only potential starter and there's some thought he'd be better in the pen, but he's a SP for now.

He started 30 games last year, as a 24 year old. With a K/9 of 9.2. Not sure what else you can expect out of 2nd year 24 year old.

Sounds like this deal is almost done. Seems just about inevitable.

If it happens, it will be tough to see Granderson go. But such is life in the big leagues.

Millwood to O's is heating up.

I like Pudge to the Nats, if only for the sandwich draft pick for Texas.

Granderson is still fairly young, has a manageable contract, and can hit 40 HRs in Yankee Stadium. Im loving this deal!

I think you may be overrating Granderson a bit. I suspect 2007 was his career year. He's still a solid player but not a stud.

If Granderson, who batted .249 with 30 homers and 71 RBIs last year, comes to the Yankees, he upgrades the middle of their outfield. It also might lead the Yankees to walk away from Johnny Damon and play Melky Cabrera in left.
If they jettison Damon and play Cabrera in LF, they really haven't upgraded themselves all that much. The upgrade from Cabrera to Granderson is as much as the downgrade from Damon to Cabrera.I can't understand the infatuation the Yankees seem to have with Melky ####### Cabrera. He is not a good ballplayer.
If the Yanks get Granderson I wouldnt be shocked if they forget about Damon, put Melky in LF, and resign Matsui to a cheaper deal as a DH. IF Matsui stays healthy Im ok with that but its a risky decision.

Granderson is a downgrade to Damon.

From a Tiger prospective -

I LOVE getting Scherzer for Jackson. Not sure why that is good for the D'Backs.

As for the Granderson part - I hope Austin Jackson is good.

I agree. I think Granderson is a slight downgrade to Damon. But I think the Yankees thinking is he can replace Damon at a cheaper contract, hes much younger, a better fielder, and he has more power. He is a worst hitter and yes I agree overall hes a slight downgrade to Damon.
