Houston Texans sign DE Mario Williams (1 Viewer)

My two cents:

1) I think Houston is happy. I think they felt they had to take Bush and are glad that his contract demands gave them an excuse not to. As an aside, I don't think this is a bad choice at all for them.

2) I think Bush goes #2 no matter what. Further, I think he's a Saint, a Jet or a Packer. The Saints will take him if they can't trade down and they won't want to trade down past #5 because they will want to make sure Fergeson or Hawk will be available to them if they do. Titans will take a QB and won't get involved with the Bush discussions.

How the heck do you SIGN multiple players to a contract????
Because legally speaking until you actually draft the player he is not yours. What you are signing is a pre-draft agreement.

Obviously that agreement would not be valid if the player is not drafted.

I remember the Browns - the year they took Couch - came to agreements with Akili Smith and I think another player as well. It was all basically a ploy to force Couch's price down.
Read the website post. They are going to select him.

As a Saints fan, :pickle: :pickle:

We either get Bush, or trade the pick to the Jets or 49ers for loads of picks and still get an elite player. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!! :banned:
Want so real EXCITEMENT. If Bush is there at #4 and the Jets pass for a QB there could be a riot in NY.
:excited:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am taking the headline on NFL.com as it is signed and completed. Meaning they can't back out now
But there will be nothing that is legally binding in whatever is signed that states that the Texans MUST draft Williams. The contractual agreement will be IF the Texans draft Williams. Now, it may well be that the Texans do intend to draft Williams. But I do not believe that's set in stone yet.

New Orleans should take Bush for all the same reasons Houston should have. This guy is so special, I cant beleive they passed up on him, Sean Payton is an offensive guy, trying to put together a winner. I like ##### McSuckister just as much as the next guy but he is an injury concern and they have no legitimate depth behind him. They should take him and never look back.

Brees

McSuckister

Bush

Horn

Stallworth

TE in the second....

This could be a potent offense.
Also Deuce is a great complement to Bush.

Have teams signed contracts with players before and ended up not drafting them?

While this is true, given that the Texans have put on their website "Williams will be the Texans second 1st overall pick," I tend to think they mean business. Drafting Bush after this would be a awfully strange move.

incorrect. They had offers out to a few players and negotiated with them, but you can only sign one guy to a contract. This is a done deal.

Seems like a strange ploy to use the NIGHT before the draft. I mean seriously, how much contract talk can one actually complete at this point and Bush will know for sure tomarrow anyway and can just take the same ol stance.

The Texans got a player they needed a lot more and were able to get him for what I'll assume is much cheaper than what Bush wanted. No worry about a holdout either.

& Bush falls to 4
or three
No way. Saints either take Bush, or charge someone a kings ransome for the #2
:lmao: W(hy)TF do the Saints take Bush over D'Brickshaw? Does a RB named Deuce McAllister ring a bell? He's leaps and bounds better than Dom Davis so it's not even close to the same situation the Texans were in....
Deuce is coming off of Knee surgery, and it's not his first. He's getting close to 30, and by the time he makes it all the way back, he will have been passed by, by all of the young RB talent that has come into this league the last few years including Bush!

Why is the surprising? We've known about Davis for quite awhile, not to mention the coaching pedigree. The only thing strange is that Houston didn't trade this pick to the Jets. This tells me that Tenn may not be drafting a QB.

From the Texans web site...

Williams’ signing marks the second time that the Texans have had their first-round pick signed before the draft.  QB David Carr agreed to a contract prior to becoming the Texans’ first-ever draft choice in 2002.  The Texans felt that agreeing to terms with the top pick was important in order to ensure that the player will begin training camp along with the rest of the team.

I think the pick is already in the books and the Saints are on the clock. I don't think you have to wait for your 15 minutes to begin.

The people in the Jets front office probably had a collective orgasm after reading this news.
I had them getting Mario so I don't think they are that happy at all.

I actually think this arguably boosts Bush's fantasy value. I'd say he has a better chance of being the unchallenged starter in another situation than being stuck in RBBC in Houston with Davis.

Careful what you wish for Jets fans. What if...

1. Texans - Mario

2. Saints - D'Brick

3. Titans - Bush

then...

4. Jest - Leinart, Young, Hawk, Davis, Huff, the rest????

This could really put a dent in what you get. I'm guessing all Jest fans and brass were thinking Tennessee goes QB and you get whichever of the top three falls.

I'd rather have Bush, Mario, or D'Brick if I'm the Jets. Taking the whatever is left is "sloppy seconds" after what you were licking your chops for.

So will it be the 1.29 and 1.4 for 1.2?
I don't have the draft pick values in front of me...could they do No.4 and No.35 for No.2? Or is that still giving up too much?

Love it!

BTW, espn.com has this quote under a picture of Williams, "Don't buy the rumors about Mario Williams the Texan. It's not happening. However, the team that does jump at the N.C. State defensive end gets a guy with one mission -- Super Bowl or bust, Clark Judge says." But, right above that is breaking news about Williams signing with Houston. :bag: :D :lmao:
Now they have quickly changed the message to say " So Mario Williams is going to become a Texan after all. By making the N.C. State pass rusher the No. 1 pick of the 2006 NFL Draft, the Texans get a guy with one mission -- Super Bowl or bust, Clark Judge says." :lmao:

What if Houston pulls a Minnesota... the guys trips walking to the podium and breaks his leg or something... and doesnt get the Williams pick in on time, and New Orleans selects him? I know, can't happen, but its funny to think about. Signed by one team, drafted by another.

New Orleans will likely trade down.

Who will come up to get Bush!! #2 pick is much cheaper than #1.
With them likely moving to LA? This almost seals the deal for the move now.
:lmao:
You won't be laughing in 2007.
I'm laughing because you are arguing that drafting a player will prompt the move of an NFL franchise. With respect to any team moving to LA--the NFL isn't going to miss out on a $1 billion franchise fee.

this is all my fault, I have owned the rights to reggie bush since Orange Bowl 2005, and traded for Deuce McCallsiter back in January...

Come on, man. Show a little class. Us Saints fans don't get to get excited about much. Let us have our moment.
Sorry, just giddy over getting an NFL team someday in LA - enjoy your season.

Does anyone have the cel number for Bloom - is is in line to get tickets to the draft so he and nittanylion may be the last people on earth to learn this...

The more I think about it, the more I believe Bush will be a Jet (if there aren't any deals). The Saints recently signed Michael Bennett. It's not like they're hurting at RB. I also think the Titans are basically locked into taking a QB. My guess is Brick goes 2 & a QB goes 3 (likely VY).

Titans will not draft Bush. They already have Brown and Henry. They want a QB, and they probably want Young.Texans are morons. Casserly is a twit. As a Houstonian, I am extremely disappointed in this decision. Carr is awful. Davis is serviceable as a RB, but not over a full season. They just signed Weaver this off season. They are morons.

Let's see, last 4 DL's that went #1

Courtney Brown - garbage

Dan Wilkinson - awful

Russell Maryland - so-so

Steve Emtman :X

Pathetic move for what is becoming a joke of a franchise.

Draft chart update -

strictly by the draft board numbers - Jets would need to send the #4, #29 and a 3rd rder for the #2 (NO would have to throw in a later rd pick to balance it out). Lot to give up for the JEts - I wouldnt be shocked to see Tangini hold out for only the #4 and high 2nd rder knowing that NO could still get Brick at #4 and likely not at #6.

Gotta love this!!!

Reminds me of this:

2. Green Bay - Tony Mandarich - T - Michigan State

3. Detroit - Barry Sanders - RB - Oklahoma State

What's the reaction down in Texans with them getting neither Bush nor Young?
It's not going to be pretty, trust me. Full page ads are taken out to draft Young, but it's the consensus that if they don't take Young to draft Bush. Gonna be fun in H-Town tomorrow morning.

How many millions did Bush just lose?
not sure but his agent should be hung by the nutsack.
:goodposting: As a DD owner, I couldn't be more ecstatic, but I think Houston probably made a deal with Williams and got him at less than #1 money. Williams had to know that Bush was the #1 pick and he probably signed a below market deal even though he was picked 1st.

It reminds me of baseball where often the best prospect isn't signed by the highest drafter because they didn't want to pay the money for them. The team negotiates with someone who isn't rated as high and makes a less than draft pick deal.

I think paying Bush more money than a franchise QB or the best RBs in the league isn't very smart. I think Williams and a good OL with the early 2nd round pick is a smart way to improve the team.

PHENOMENAL! Re-do all the mocks, let the spin begin everywhere.

I have to give Mort credit, I listened to McShay, Mayock, Kiper, GM Jr. and Mort today and Mort is the only one that said this was going to happen. He said everyone wrongly assumed the Texans were using Williams as leverage but they really did see him as the #1 guy.

Mort also said that Ron Wolf keeps in touch with six current GMs on a regular basis and, for the first time since Wolf retired, all six GMs have a unanimous opinion on which player was the best prospect...Mario Williams.

Right - Michael Bennett will hold the Saints from drafting someone described as potentially the next Gale Sayers...

I'm glad someone said this. Terrible terrible move.

5 years from now this could be looked back on as one of the biggest draft blunders in recent memory.

Despite how it ends up working out, I REALLY hope Houston has better reasons for this than Bush's contract demands. To pass up on such a prospect over a few million dollars that amount to nary a dent in the salary cap would be one of the biggest mistakes I have ever seen a front office make.

What a debacle.

This is why you don't let a guy that's about to get fired manage your draft.

I'm still sceptical. They could have deals with all the top players, all that matters is who they actually select tomorrow.

This could still be a negotiation ploy with Bush.
:goodposting:
This isnt a good posting. Turn your TV on and watch it for yourself. The deal is SIGNED. Different than offering a contract. Once a deal is signed it is done.

I looked up DE and here are the DE's picked in the top 15 the last 10 years. Ware isn't actually a DE, but was listed as one before the draft. The first DE has a pretty decent track record if you discount injuries.CODE
