I'm not saying they don't need a week off. It is definitely undesirable to take that away, but they find themselves having to choose from all undesirable outcomes. This narrative is overblown IMO. Its always easy for others who dont wear helmets, pads and hit each other daily to tell others they dont need a week off.
And current NFL schedules -- including just last year -- occasionally have teams playing for 16 straight weeks. And this year, potentially 15 straight weeks for some teams. This is really no different.
What should really happen is that the NFL should cut at least 2 preseason games, make the regular season 18 weeks to play 16 games, and then give all playoff teams an off week before the first week of games. That would show they care about the players, and it would also have a side effect of making situations like these more manageable. Will they ever consider implementing such measures? There is no sign of it.
