Hurricane Sandy (1 Viewer)

Anyone have links to local NYC tv streaming? I'm on my phone and it's a pain to search.

Listening to WABC 7 on the radio and it's even worse as a radio broadcast

Just had a very large branch hit the side of the house. Went out to check it out and a branch about 4 inch in diameter smashed down on our deck. Good thing I had a hard hat on at the wife's insistence. I did not see any major damage but stuff is flying all over.
Cripes man - be careful. When I was outside 5 hours ago, it scared the crap out of me watching the trees.
Yeah it seems to be getting worse. Now I gotta take the dogs out in a few. That will be an adventure.
I've never seen my two dogs piss so fast...
:lmao: my one hates the rain. She sits here holding it in waiting for it to stop. I am going to have to just shove her out there soon. My other one goes out there like it is nothing as tree branches fly around, i can't tell if he is that brazen or that dopey

Edit to say, you are correct as oyster creek is oldest operating site, as Dresden 1 is retired, sorry
I have to say this does not exactly inspire confidence.

OMG a House just caught fire about a block up from us (Royersford, PA) Blazing out of control :X

We're far enough away but HFS. Still very high winds from the storm here. The firefighters have no chance against this thing

Any thoughts or insights on this boomer? This has jumped my inconvenience and annoyance to full blown anxiety. Obviously the last thing we need. How "normal" is an alert? There is one south of ocean city Nj that is also pretty close to the shore.

The plant was shutdown 2 weeks ago for refueling and there are 300 workers on site. My link

2nd lowest level of concern of 5. Not a big deal at all. I've seen a dozen in 20 years, just a condition outside of normal operating conditions. Plus the site is in shut down, again no worries...

Ok this is helping. Humor a shell shocked. Child of the nuclear age sitting in 70mph wind in the dark...

In brief, what made fukashima "FUKASHIMA" as compared to this? Was fukashima not overrun? Why is it not like this?

Fukushima was still active when it occurred. Presuming this has been shut down for maintenance, you would no longer need the coolant system to cool the fuel rods since they aren't being used therefore, you wouldn't see a meltdown. Additionally, there is no indication that water has gotten to the generators (probably why it is still just a warning) and there is no indication the generators are in any danger of failing and one would think the US had or has put in new regulations about having an actual backup in case of floods although this last part is conjecture.

Fukushima water inundated the site, flooding emergency back up generators which provide back up power. without back up power, they had no way to provide cooling water to the reactors, thus meltdown. Here we have water levels are higher than designed in the intake bays, no threat to back up systems.

Ok this is reasonable to me but I'm still  for a bit. As bad as this storm was, I feel pretty confident in feeling it wasn't analogous with a tidal wave but it's been a long life

 I can't really explain it. When my wife takes them out in the morning on the leashes, they putz around for 10-15 minutes. Me, I just fling the door open and they are off to the races. Tonight they tore out and tore back in like I have never seen before. The one actually pissed on the porch.

Not sure if it helps you but Oyster is 23 ft above sea level. A tsunami withstanding, I don't see the site being flooded.

Just saw either another press conference or the end of the press conference where Christie pretty much said Mayor Langford was impossible to deal with. I'm sure his constituents will continue to vote for him but I suspect this is the closest we'll see to Nagin.

Cool, my roof is leaking. I get to climb into the attic now too gauge how bad it is.
UPDATE: and my 5 month old son is sick.P.S. I've got a 6 gallon bucket on a piece of plywood in the attic now too. How bad of an idea is that? PS2. FML

 thank you. Makes sense. I shudder to think of what the morning light brings.

When I went to NOLA after Katrina, the folks said to me, "this was like 9/11 but instead of ten square blocks it was our entire city". And I believed them and understood, but i have to say it didn't CONNECT until tonight.

Everywhere I know and cherish as a refuge, is facing a very uncertain short term future right now.

You hear report after report of new misery, from Cape may to new London Connecticut, saying nothing of pa, md Delaware and then points west.

Truly, no where to run to, no where to hide.

Do you have any of those big 33 gallon storage containers that is long enough to sit across the 2x4s of the joists?
yup, unless you want to get up a few times i the middle of the night. The container may be real heavy depending how big the leak is, but you can take buckets and dump the water out in the morning. the 33 gallon container will be the safe bet though so you can avoid the least amount of water damage. Is it a pinhole like a nail in the roof, or can you see where the leak is coming in? you can always try a quick patch job there too from the inside to slow it down.

Isn't there a lot of water all around?
My linkThey're speculating a generator fire as the cause, we didn't hear yet if that's the case. The family in the house got out ok, their next door neighbor apparently broke his arm helping to get them out. Either way, glad everyone is OK but that hit way too close to home. I hope everyone continues to stay safe out there.

My guess is, someone should have bought that late night product that can turn a screen door into a power boat

4-5 buildings in a fire in Rockaway Park, Queens - fire fighters could not get close enough to put it out due to the water levels, firefighters waded through the water and brought 30-40 residents to safety. The smell from the fire is sweeping much of Manhattan.

Looks like it is actually 20-25 homes, holy hell - 5 alarm fire, hydrants empty, too much rain to get to the homes.

Now 50 homes reported destroyed, 10 more burning, 6-alarm fire!?!?!!?!?
