Hurricane Sandy (2 Viewers)

Someone I know just asked on FB about Jersey City. Anyone have insight about damage reports there?
About 70 to 75 percent of residents in Jersey City remain without power and "that isn't changing," Kierce said, adding that nearly 1.4 million people are without power statewide. There have been 33 deaths attributed to the storm in statewide. There are about 300 people staying at Jersey City's seven shelters including several with their pets at the pet friendly shelter at Pershing Field, a health department official said.

Thanks TU. She's from Jersey, guess Jersey City. She's probably not heard from friends. Power out would be a good reason.
"Haven't heard from my best friend since 11 pm when she told me her road was flooding. Starting to worry."
if you know where in Jersey City here friend lives i may be able to provide some insights.

Any updates on the Atlantic City boardwalk?Did the casinos get much damage? What about the Ocean City boardwalk?
Except for the part of the AC boardwalk that washed away (it was scheduled for demo anyway), things aren't too bad down there from what I hear. I'm sure there is plenty of water damage, and some roads were damaged and still closed, but haven't heard anything terribly tragic. It sounds like Ocean City suffered the worst of the shore towns, mostly property damage and it was still flooded today. Residents are not allowed to return. Businesses on the boardwalk were mostly ok. Seems like one of the biggest problems they will have is removing the beach from the cities. It looked like half a foot of sand everywhere in most of the shore towns.
City county and state are getting the snow plows to move the sand off of the roads. The barrier islands will never be the same again. Getting reports that a new inlet was cut into Holgate from the massive water surge that happened there. The actual coastline is going to be different after this.
No doubt its changed and will look different. AC's beach was small as it was, they said it went from 125' to 25' of beach. Sorry about your friend's and family's houses, at least they're safe.

Just saw this:
The Atlantic City Tourism Board released this statement to say that while large stretches of the long famed boardwalk are gone, the stretch in front of the casinos including the sand dunes there is largely damage-free:"The entire oceanfront Boardwalk in front of the Atlantic City casinos is undamaged with all dunes and lights intact. There is minimal-to no-visible damage to casinos and other businesses fronting the Boardwalk along the ocean. The Atlantic City Boardwalk that was washed out by Hurricane Sandy is an area limited to the Boardwalk fronting the Absecon Inlet only. That small section of the Boardwalk is located in South Inlet, a prominent residential section of Atlantic City. It is a small stretch of Boardwalk that is being shown in video footage and photos.Thomas R. Some really expensive houses were destroyed in Staten Island. One family decided to ignore the evacuation orders and stayed because their house was looted during Irene. A catastrophic wave hit their house and destroyed it leaving nothing but rubble and their staircase. The dad is missing, the mom is in critical condition, and the 13 yr old daughter is dead.

What a sad tragedy because they wanted to protect their stuff and not themselves.
You gotta almost print this stuff out and keep it in a book somewhere to remind yourself and others that nothing is more important than your life. I believe other folks would have done something similar.
I dunno, I wouldn't be one of them. I'd gladly buy a replacement for anything I have instead of risking my family's life for some jewelry and nonsense. I'm sure they replaced everything that was stolen last year, so what's the point? I'm told to evacuate, I'm out. Take some small valuables if you must, but I'm getting out of dodge. My father was one who almost stayed put in Wildwood. It got to the point where me or my brother was going to get him before he agreed to leave. Just not worth it.

Anyone have any word on Sea Girt? I heard the boardwalk was entirely destroyed but was wondering about the rest of town? Thanks

Just saw those weatherboy pics...I'm depressed. Family and friends with homes in mantaloking and ortley...I don't see how their homes are still standing.

I just got an announcement saying my power will be out possibly for another 7-10 days.

If your dealing with this on the east coast I just ask you all to try to be civil...ask your neighbors if they need help...offer assistance to a stranger...be patient when in long lines. Try not to get all barbaric with each other. The situation we're In sucks...don't make it any worse.

Night 2 of darkness. Sent my kid to sleep at my cousin's house. They have a total of 7 kids sleeping over. Wife and I are staying here and watching movies on our cellphones. Power is rumored to be back by Monday. Might drive out to PA to buy a generator.

Damn, I think I'd rather still be oblivious than know what happened elsewhere.

Thoughts and, if I were still a praying man, prayers out to those affected more seriously than the close call we had.

The worst part (for those of us who are fortunate enough to only be dealing with power failure) is the not knowing.

Office closed again tomorrow.

My wife spent the past two days wondering what was happening to her island (LBI). Now, she just went to bed cursing herself for seeing all the pictures. It's heartbreaking.

Man, it's pretty bad.

First time with any connectivity to the outside world thanks to Walmart free wi-fi and a power port.

Cell phone towers for AT&T have about a 15 minute drive radius around my house where it is a dead zone. No power. Driving around is dangerous, there are trees and power lines just all over the place, like a video game.

And just going on google and seeing the South Jersey shore and NYC damage, I don't even think my area got even a touch of that destruction.

God bless everybody and I hope the best.

Good luck, buddy.

Yea, my cousin lives there, about three blocks from the beach. Total devistation. The first floor of their home is completely flooded, new car burned (a bunch of cars burned - must be something w/ the electric?) They're saying it might be a month before they can go back to even start repairs.

made it out but no power with limited cell phone and internet....morris county hammered but standinf....my dad went to check on his place in little egg harbor and entire 1st floor is gone...computers, memorabilia, fridge, 3 wallls all gone...only thing he found was a family picture 5 houses away....he tried to get to lbi to check family beach house and couldnt get on....from what ive heard the island is in ruins....happy my family is safe...but what an awful experience.... hit right to the heart!

I'd be surprised if it actually went from 125' to 25' and I wouldn't call AC's beach small at least not when you go to LBI. Compared to Wildwood anything is small but it seems a bit early to know how much beach is actually gone. But at points in the last few years, LBI had what looked like 10-20 feet of beach during high tides and I know they did a lot of restoration but can't imagine what LBI will look like going forward.

My Dad in in Sea Girt. I'll get an update this morning. They had mandatory evacuations for the 1st three blocks from the beach. Avon and Belmar lost their boardwalks also.

Thanks would be very interested to hear about it as the family beach house is about 5 blocks from the beach. My cousin who has a house in Belmar was heading down and was going to take a look at Sea Girt as well if they could get close.

Mrs BL has been working at an evacuation center a few blocks away. 600 people housed at the local high school. Friend of ours is working an evac center there with 400 displaced residents.

There are 76 evac centers setup in NYC.

Yeah, there is one near me in Park Slope and we brought down some clothes as the word had gone around they were looking for Mens and kids clothing.

Long Island checking in. :hey:

Just got into the office where there is power and innerwebs. One of the 90% at home, though. :( Thoughts and prayers to all who sat through this, especially those who reeeally felt the wrath of Sandy.

Four different paths out of my neighborhood, only one clear. The house is unscathed as is JT's Treehouse! , but I have neighbors who are seriously ####ed. 60 foot trees lying on their roofs. Sooo glad we decided 4 years ago to take down the three 60 footer evergreens that surrounded our house. My son and I took a ride Monday night- we thought before the #### hit the fan- to check out the high tide near us. The water had left behind debris marking the high water mark a block inland. In my thirty years up here it had never even breached the shore road before. Turned tail and drove home when a tree crashed across the road a couple of hundred feet in front of us!! A past chief of the local volunteer FD who lives two doors down from me and spent Monday night responding to calls tells me that-based on the amount of "tree downage"- he wouldn't be surprised if we aren't back up and running for... TWO WEEKS!

Observations:

1. Buy homes near a firehouse- they are a priority when it comes to power restoration. Small businesses on Main street near the firehouse were up and running. The couple of restaurants, bars, one of two pizzerias and the one Chinese take were packed last night. 2 hour wait at the pizza place- pies only! Amen to our Coleman stove and stores of canned/freeze dried food!

2. TRAFFIC LIGHTS OUT AT FOUR WAY INTERSECTION DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE THE GREEN! It becomes a four way stop! Local news and radio needs to broadcast this every 15 minutes. After what I saw this morning I wouldn't be surprised to see a significant number of casualties...

3. Stockpiling beer for a hurricane loses it's luster when you have children in the house...

4. Women of eastern European heritage CANNOT look at a yard full of leaves and branches and do nothing. Especially after hunting down an extra large cup of 7-11 coffee... :scared:

5. Post cleanup late night sponge baths with the MRS are kinda neat...

6. Lastly- for now- some heavy reading and board game playing up in here so far. My son is currently brainstorming a first person POV video game wherein the player starts out as a budding tropical storm down in the South Atlantic and works his way north. Amazing what can get done when the power goes out.

:pics: to come as soon as I can manage that.

I'd assume cell towers lost power.

Dumb question here, if you won't have power for 2 weeks why not just drive to Nebraska or something? That's what all the Katrinas did.

New Yorkers seem to believe that they will all have power again within a couple of days. Also, a huge swath of the United States has less than $500 in savings in this economy. Probably has something to do with why people aren't leaving.

If memory serves, there is a three day back up battery on most cell towers. We might be nearing the shelf life in some. Additionally, anyone who is powerless and can get a car charge is likely using their phone to communicate with the outside world

Articles about looting are starting to show up. Always sad to see those. Not even essential items - apparently Brookstone was looted yesterday in Brooklyn.

There was a story about a family who stayed on Staten Island and a catastrophic wave wiped the whole house away. Dad has been missing(presumed dead), 13 yo daughter dead, mom in critical condition, can't wait to hear what she says when and if she makes it. All in the name of possible looters.

If you can't afford to leave, or if you can't find a way to get out, or if there's no reason to believe there will be a catastrophe in your area, that's one thing. To stay because of fear of looting is unimaginable to me. And to stay and then loot is just disgusting. To compound that by looting headphones from Brookstone just boggles my mind. If you need food, or water, or medication that's running out, that's one thing. This is insanity.

That certainly didn't stop the katrinas.
