Hurricane Sandy (4 Viewers)

Dumb question here, if you won't have power for 2 weeks why not just drive to Nebraska or something? That's what all the Katrinas did.
New Yorkers seem to believe that they will all have power again within a couple of days. Also, a huge swath of the United States has less than $500 in savings in this economy. Probably has something to do with why people aren't leaving.
That certainly didn't stop the katrinas.
There was a mandatory evacuation of some areas of the Gulf Coast. The National Guard was taking people out of their homes and removing them from Orleans Parish after the storm, and it was illegal to be in the Parish if you weren't essential personnel. Probably makes it easier to decide to leave.

Anyone have any word on Sea Girt? I heard the boardwalk was entirely destroyed but was wondering about the rest of town? Thanks
My Dad in in Sea Girt. I'll get an update this morning. They had mandatory evacuations for the 1st three blocks from the beach. Avon and Belmar lost their boardwalks also.
Thanks would be very interested to hear about it as the family beach house is about 5 blocks from the beach. My cousin who has a house in Belmar was heading down and was going to take a look at Sea Girt as well if they could get close.
Belmar - Water reached almost to Main Street, I think that Rte 71. Almost to Bar A.Sea Girt - Not too bad there. Northern part of boardwalk is OK, southern part is gone. Water only came up to 2nd Ave.

Articles about looting are starting to show up. Always sad to see those. Not even essential items - apparently Brookstone was looted yesterday in Brooklyn.

There was a story about a family who stayed on Staten Island and a catastrophic wave wiped the whole house away. Dad has been missing(presumed dead), 13 yo daughter dead, mom in critical condition, can't wait to hear what she says when and if she makes it. All in the name of possible looters.
If you can't afford to leave, or if you can't find a way to get out, or if there's no reason to believe there will be a catastrophe in your area, that's one thing. To stay because of fear of looting is unimaginable to me. And to stay and then loot is just disgusting. To compound that by looting headphones from Brookstone just boggles my mind. If you need food, or water, or medication that's running out, that's one thing. This is insanity.
You're surprised that in a population of 12+ million people that somebody might steal some headphones if left unattended?

I actually would have, however you'd be driving into the back end of the storm. It was doing a full curl through Virginia, west va, central pa, Ohio, now Chicago evacs and I believe it's still supposed to double back north of the city. I posted that I felt like there was no where to run to earlier in the thread because its kind of true. Also hard to abandon neighbors and family in crisis. I guess a line wolf could have flown to california or Texas on saturday.

:jawdrop: I shouldn't be surprised but :jawdrop: that's an easy half to 3/4 inland

That's a great summary of my post. Thanks.

For those trying to find loved ones, or who are in the flood zone and can't get hold of loved ones to tell them you're okay, American Red Cross Safe And Sound is up and running, as always.https://safeandwell.communityos.org/cms/index.php
You really have to respect the Red Cross in times like this.... I gotta think that if you're out there in the wreckage of what was once your home... nothing could comfort you quite like seeing a tent/truck with that symbol on it. World wide it sorta symbolizes "We got you...It's gonna be alright"

By the way, great "progress" with HDTV signals today. Good luck getting an over the air television signal unless you can SEE the broadcaster tower from where you put your antenna you have no shot at a signal

Point of information - the Brookstone store that was looted was in South Street Seaport, lower Manhattan. Eyes and ears prevent looting. Neighbors, doormen, workers going to and fro. South Street Seaport is largely a movie prop set with very, very few residents (they converted a few buildings north of the store in question, but the population is pretty thin). There's really nothing except tourist attractions and tourist restaurant/bar fare for several blocks in any direction.

Not saying it couldn't happen in other neighborhoods, but you're talking about a souless stretch with very few people around under normal conditions and very few people invested in the blocks around there. I seriously doubt that kind of bull#### would happen in 95% of New York neighborhoods, simply because there would be residents present and people around who actually care.

My apologies. I'd just been reading an article about looting in Brooklyn before the one I posted.

Coney Island, Crooklyn

First the floods, now the fires. With ruptured gas mains and tanks throughout the area devastated by Hurricane Sandy, fires and explosions are occurring throughout the region. With roads washed out and towns still flooded, firefighters have no choice but to let them burn. WABC-TV used their news helicopter to capture some of the fires this morning over Mantoloking, NJ. Here, some of the few homes that remain standing burst into flames during overnight explosions. There's also reports of fire shooting up from the sand, likely from ruptured gas mains where homes once stood. (from FB)

Whoa, hold up there. Wouldn't is be easier to drive some place closer that still has power. I hear it is warmish in Florida.

limited internet so forgive me if it has been posted ....anyone have recent updates or more pics on LBI - specifically looking for Brant Beach near Daddy O's and Dom's....cant get on the island for another week or so. Thanks!

Small potatoes I know, but I'm fairly outraged that Christie ordered all towns to postpone Trick or Treating until Monday. Huge abuse of power IMO. Most of the area around me is basically undamaged. There is no reason each town can't easily decide this for themselves.

You're outraged? Do you not understand why he did it?

being that he advised towns like AC to evacuate and their mayor decided that folks should stay, im guessing he isnt taking any more chances with people getting hurt.

Oh please. That's on that one mayor. This is stupid.

Really? Wow. You are tough to please.

Hope everyone here is OK. Family and I are good, house survived. Without power and cell towers are down, so access is tough. Was able to find a nearby gas station with only about a 30 min wait to fill up.

The storm was intense. I was amazed we didn't lose any trees on the house. Nearby neighbors weren't as lucky. Many many large trees down, many on houses and cars. Very hard to get around still. This is my first Internet access since we lost power. Finally seeing pictures and they are unreal. Listening to it on the radio is one thing, but pictures another. The south shore of Long Island is just brutal. I feel for those people.

Thorpswishes to all there. Hope everyone here is accounted for.

I'm pretty ####ed up right now. My brother in law, my cousin and his kids are still unaccounted for. By all accounts, they were in Brigantine NJ when the storm hit.

I feel numb right now.

Welcome back from the "dead." Crazy ####, no? And I LOVE trees... :wall:

I have no cell/landline/power/innerwebs- and I didn't get buried flooded!! I'm sure they will be in touch soon.

I would relax a bit. Going to take weeks to sort this out. Heck I think there were people popping up in droves for 3+ weeks after Katrina hit. If they visit the red cross for some reason you'll know, if not odds are it will be a really long time if they are stranded somewhere.

If anyone finds a list of names in shelters or something, please pass along. TIA
The best database is often the Red Cross one I posted earlier: https://safeandwell.communityos.org/cms/index.phpBut of course the person has to register for it. Keep checking, but try to remember that cell towers and everything else are out, there. Like Katrina, it could be several days before you hear anything, and it could well be great news at that time.

Thanks. I got through to my friend who is a retired cop there. He said they didn't a pretty good job evacuating Brigantine and basically the same thing about it might take weeek(s) to get reconnected.

Stay safe, stay inside, don't talk to strangers.

Wow man, plenty of T&P hoping for the best. FWIW, I've been following the news pretty closely and haven't heard of any fatalities down the shore in those towns. (I don't mean to sound morbid, actually trying to calm you down a bit) Is your sister ok?

Yes, sister was in Cherry Hill with my mom at the time. They're fine.

I have no idea if this is helpful or not, but found aerial footage of Brigantine post-storm:http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/video/#!/news/local/Aerial-Footage-of-Brigantine/176496151

That doesn't look bad at all (relatively).

AZ Ron: Where in Brigantine were they? Approximately?
Near Harbour Beach Blvd and Ocean Dr intersection. Right near the Inlet.
The necessary evacuations that I saw were from the North end. Accounts are that some customers on the South end even have power. Someone at Shipmaster Cove I heard from got power back last night. My understanding is that the North end is in really bad shape. So especially with them being on the South end, keep your chin up. Very, very good chance of good news.
