I am watching every Bond movie: please kill me (1 Viewer)

We're not done. Just have more at work. Less time to watch a 2 hour movie every night. On the final Dalton movie next.

Live and Let Die is a huge value pick here.
I think the central conceit of watching the movies in order really penalized Live and Let Die. If Capella watched the Moore films in reverse order, he'd think Live and Let Die was Citizen Kane.

There's nothing in the Connery/Lazenby era that prepares the viewer for the cheesy, crazy goodness that is Live and Let Die. Roger Bond was as much a reboot of the character as Craig Bond was so applying the standards of the previous films doesn't make much sense. I admit I hold a special fondness for Live and Let Die because it's the first 007 movie but I prefer its total off the wall approach to the mixed serious/jokey tone of the series' next two decades.
Also, Jane Seymour was arguably the hottest Bond chick ever. That sways my fondness for the movie in a fairly large way.

First one I saw, AND best theme song, even if Paul is singing it at 70.

My grandfather was a successful electrical contracting business owner, politician, builder, software entrepreneur, pilot, sailer, world traveler, and all around bad ### who strutted around in an Indian Jones fedora.

He (and my grandmother) LOVED James Bond. I think he thought of himself in that way to some degree. Of course he was a Connery guy.

He passed last night at 93. I'll be cueing up a few classics this weekend in his honor.

Sounds like an amazing guy. Sorry (belatedly) for your loss.

This.

Now that college football is here should we assume this is on hiatus until 2016?
No because we watched them during the week quite a few times. Re-doing the whole first floor of the house now is the real problem. We will finish by the new movie, we will binge watch if necessary.

Btw, don't ever renovate.

I'm in Canada right now - where TV is awful - flipping through the channels and the caught the opening of "A View to A Kill". Thought of this thread and tried to watch it. So, so bad. Couldn't make it 15 minutes.

Went back to watching some show about a Mountie who goes to Chicago with his pet wolf.

Spectre theme song kinda sucks
Agree, although there have been a few before that have sucked before. Doesn't ruin the movie. In the theatre, you just get suffer thru it, on video you FF thru the credits, on TV you treat the credits like a commercial.

007 movies are pretty much the last holdout that still show four-minute title sequences near the beginning of the film. The Man from UNCLE had one but it was in keeping with the retro style of it. Otherwise, you'll get the names of the production companies, the title and the stars but rarely technicians like the DP, production designer and score composer.

Exactly! BTW was UNCLE any good?

I thought it was kind of meh and a good argument against Guy Ritchie ever directing a 007 movie.

It was too self-aware to be taken seriously and it took itself too seriously to succeed as a parody. Compared to a Bond movie, the forced mismatched buddies of Solo and Ilya weren't as good as a single hero, the villains and caper were unimaginative and there were long stretches of the film where very little happened. On the plus side, it looked good and Hugh Grant's M like character was a nice touch.

I don't think it did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel. A sequel might be better though because the filmmakers wouldn't have to waste time on what little character development they did. Bond movies have a big built in advantage. From the moment the gun barrel appears, audiences know the 007 character and the basic setup for the story. The writer and director have over 50 years of collective history to draw from or on occasion, play against.

Yes, but it's tradition. For the record, I don't like most of the Bond theme songs. That especially includes Skyfall, which everybody else apparently loved but I hated. Still, it's just not the same without them. It's like leaving the chorus out of a Greek tragedy.

If you've seen both, UNCLE or Kingsman?

Probably Kingsman because it was much more inventive. I'd seen everything in UNCLE before.

I'm not squeamish but I did have trouble with the gratuitousness of the violence in Kingsman. We saw it opening night so it was well before the Charleston church massacre but I found that scene particularly hard to take. It didn't help that there was a guy a couple of rows back who laughed through the whole thing. I thought the story kind of fell apart at the end but that's true of the majority of Bond movies too.

Just re-watched Quantom of Solace. It's actually a pretty decent movie until the last 20 minutes. The villain is weak but that's the case in several movies - they just needed a better ending. Not sure why it gets such a low ranking.

I like Quantum better than Skyfall.

God no. But to each his/her own.

I am stoked for Spectre. Love Craig Daniels. Second best 007 ever next to Sir Sean.

He is a perfect James Bond. So far 2/3 have been spot on for me with one mis-step in Quantum. In fact Casino Royale and Skyfall are top 10 007 flicks for me with Casino a top 3 easy.

:lmao: at Craig Daniels

My one fear of Spectre is the change of 'M.' I loved Dame Judy in that role. Especially with Daniel Craig; the two of them just played against each other so well.

This is quite odd.
It's mostly the Skyfall hype I guess but I was just begging for it to be over by the time M bought it.

There was a lot to like in Skyfall but I agree it went a little too long. I'd rank Craig's 007 movies:

Casino > Skyfall > Quantum. I also agree that he's moved in to the #2 spot behind Connery for best Bond. I hope he changes his mind and comes back for more after Spectre.

Quantum of Solace is a different kind of bad. Forster created a joyless incomprehensible turd that took itself way too seriously. Other bad Bonds are fun at least. Diamonds are Forever, the Roger Bonds and Tomorrow Never Dies are campy over the top entertainment. Quantum aspired to elevate the genre and failed almost completely. I think Die Another Day was the only other 007 movie that tried to do this but it didn't nearly aim as high.

Every time I hear about Quantum I think of one of Maddox's rants http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=quantum_of_phallus
:lmao:

I haven't even seen Quantum. This made me want to watch because of my immediate repulsion. I knew that this thread was a feat of strength but how bad does it really get?

Are we cheering on a divorce?
The only way this can be done is to put months inbetween films...just long enough for you to forget just how bad it gets...
